Under the Lilacs | Louisa May Alcott
22 posts | 21 read | 11 to read
Under the Lilacs was published in 1878, approximately 10 years after the release of Little Women. This charming story is about two girls, Bab and Betty who are having a tea party. When a dog eats their cake, and they end up finding a circus runaway in their barn. Alcott was a very prolific writer who wrote books for almost 40 years. She passed away in 1888 due to health problems related to mercury poisoning.

I went to a vintage store today and saw some books I resisted buying! But the photos warm my heart also!
Bobbsey Twins, Hardy Boys & Cherry Ames Student Nurse are the older ones that are hard to see.

I was very happy to read a book that has been prominently displayed on a bookshelf in our living room for nearly 25 years! Sadly, it did not touch my heart as much as I had hoped. One of my favorite characters was this trained poodle, Sancho. He and Ben,a runaway from a circus are both lovable! Thank you as always @TheBookHippie for this delightful read along. #childrensclassicread2023

It was a good read , I can‘t say it‘s the best. I like Alcott‘s other works. It started off very nicely , but in the mid way I felt it dragged a bit. And I dint like the animal abuse part in children book, it‘s hard to read. But overall it‘s a good story I switched to audio and enjoyed it. I like happy endings 🥰 #childrenclassicread2023

UwannaPublishme Yay for happy endings! 🙌🏻 11mo

Call me a sap for neatly spun happy endings, but I‘m marking this a pick. Ben and Sancho were thoroughly entertaining as well as the more spectacular(vs. darker)elements of the circus. Loved Bab showing up the boys with her archery skills and Betty stepping out of her shell to rescue Sancho. It definitely had some cringy moments, but that‘s a given for a 150-year-old classic. Alcott still rules in my book!

I wasn‘t wowed by this. I did like it and it was okay for a couple minutes with coffee this month but also it‘s been a rough month so who knows. Still glad to have read it! Little Women is still my favorite!

May #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2023

AnnR I felt the same. It started off okay but then I lost interest. Not one of Alcott's strongest pieces of writing. (edited) 11mo
tpixie I remember enjoying it as a child. I think this book is why I have always wanted a lilac bush. Unfortunately, I didn‘t read it this May. Sad to hear it doesn‘t hold up well. 10mo

Bailedbailed

I'm not sure what's up with me these past few weeks; I'm super grumpy & now find myself annoyed with a children's book 😆 I'm blaming it on this awful heatwave. I enjoyed the scenes involving the excellent dog Sancho, but not much else, & I find myself dreading reading even a chapter each night. I think that defeats the purpose of kid's lit so I'm chalking it up to a case of the grumps & bailing. #ChildrensClassicRead2023 @TheBookHippie

SayersLover Under the Lilacs was always my least favorite of Alcott‘s books. Hopefully you‘ll find a better book to pull you through the slump. @batsy 11mo

batsy @SayersLover @Tamra Thank you, my other current read is proving to be good 😁 11mo
batsy @TheBookHippie Yes! I'm sure it's a sweet story but it's too episodic to hold my attention at the moment. 11mo
dabbe Where's your heatwave? Mine's in Phoenix. My husband just told me we're having a cold spell; it's supposed to hit 99 and not 100. 🙄 #ughmehgrrbleh 🥵 Glad your new book is better! 😍 11mo
batsy @dabbe In Malaysia 🙂 It's generally hot and humid all year round, but whew this year we're being pummelled by heat (and still nowhere as bad as what some of our neighbours are experiencing). And the El Nino is yet to arrive... Here's to us staying cool 🧊🧊🧊 11mo
CarolynM Hope your next book makes you happy in spite of the heat😘 11mo
batsy @CarolynM Thanks, Carolyn ❤️ 11mo
dabbe @batsy Shoot; I knew that ... I just forgot! I had no idea how hot and humid it can be there. Here it's supposedly a dry heat, but during the monsoon it can be over 100 F (38 C?) + the humidity. And El Nino is supposed to be a big one this year. Hang in there! 🩵🤍🩵 11mo
batsy @dabbe No worries, and thank you! Hope you get cooler weather too 💙 11mo
Bookwomble @batsy @dabbe I was practically prostrated with heat exhaustion last week when the temperature in Lancashire hit a sweltering 21°C (61.8F)🌡️🥵 I'd be a puddle in the temperatures you're both enduring! 11mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Thank technology for air conditioners. 🥵 to 😍! (edited) 11mo
batsy @Bookwomble It is really tough. There is a range of temps beyond which the humidity becomes exhausting. I'm sure it's worse still for people who are used to more temperate climates to suddenly experience a heatwave ... Lots of these extremes cropping up now 😥 11mo
Bookwomble @batsy It's all relative, of course, but unjust that the Global North is responsible for the majority of carbon emissions responsible for climate change, while the Global South is feeling most of the effects. I do hope that you get some relief from the heat soon 🩵 11mo
batsy @Bookwomble Thank you! There's thankfully been some bouts of rain 🌧️💙 11mo
UwannaPublishme Oh my! Hope cooler weather is headed your way soon. Keep those fans going and the ice cream stocked! 🍦 11mo

I‘m finally getting to this one, on audio.

I‘m getting sads though, the casual mention to animal death & abuse. 😢

rubyslippersreads I‘m sure I must have read this as a child, but based on your review, I think I‘ll skip it this time. I just can‘t handle animal abuse. 11mo
Soscha It‘s not over-the-top but casual mentions to throw things at loose dogs, feeding a mouse‘s nest of babies to a cat, as a jolly “revenge” thing. (edited) 11mo
Soscha This was the way our country used to work though. 11mo
DivineDiana I too found those parts of the story upsetting. ☹️ 9mo

I have a print copy of this book in my Louisa May Alcott collection, but this time I chose to listen to the audio. This is a sweet story, but it‘s definitely not one of my favorites of hers. First of all, I think she wrote hardworking girls better than boys (which we see a bit of in Bab), and this one is just a bit too perfect in how it all works out.

This collection of Louisa May Alcott books was passed down to my daughter from her older cousin who received it from her older cousin. The set was a gift from their grandmother and has the signed bookplates to prove it. Sadly, my daughter never read them. I am glad they are here, so that I can join #childrensclassicread2023!

ravenlee My mom has an almost identical set! Hers is tan instead of green, but the spines otherwise look the same. 11mo

It was alright. Certainly charming, but there was something missing in the story for me to really love it. The description made it seem like the story was about the two girls, Bab and Betty, but it was really about Ben. He came from a circus and lost his father. Mrs. Miss took him in and then Miss Celia. The children have all kinds of adventures, and everything ends happily.

Inspired by @Clwojick 's bujo spreads where she uses actual book covers, I've printed off the ones for my #BookSpinBingo so I can make a bingo card out of them when I draw the numbers!!!

mabell What a great idea!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @AllisonM89 - Well, that's my usual method, but since they are actually supposed to end up in a bingo format this time, it seemed like a fun month to try the cover method! 😂 4y

Day 11 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts brings us more Louisa May Alcott, two titles that I only read maybe once or twice, and so long ago that I have only the vaguest memories as to what they are about! Obviously due for rereads, as are so many of my books!!

Remember when books used to get special library bindings? It makes me a little sad that they don't do that any more. I have loads of library discards! These are from ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks Wagnall's Memorial Library in Lithopolis, Ohio, which you should Google if you have a minute because it's a magical place. It was the library we visited the most when I was growing up - at least one afternoon a week (we were homeschooled) was devoted to the library - reading, exploring, research, half hour on the computer (Oregon Trail!) - I remember finally learning to write my name in cursive so I could get my own library card - magic indeed! 4y
Chrissyreadit I love Alcott so much! And still remember getting my first library card. It was absolutely magical. 4y
Leftcoastzen I have a great fondness for those old library bindings. also how silky the page edges feel when these books were circulated a lot. 4y

Leftcoastzen Just went and looked up that library, wow, it‘s gorgeous and magical! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - It just felt like the entire world was at my fingertips!!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Leftcoastzen - yes on the silky page edges!! Something about them getting worn down so smooth, and thinking about how many people have to turn those pages to get them that way - magic! And so glad you liked Wagnall's - it's so amazing in real life!!! 4y
