Brother Cadfael is confounded when his own potion is used to kill his former loves new husband Gervase Bonel is a guest of Shrewsbury Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul when he suddenly takes ill. Luckily, the abbey boasts the services of the clever and kindly Brother Cadfael, a skilled herbalist. Cadfael hurries to the mans bedside, only to be confronted with two surprises: In Master Bonels wife, the good monk recognizes Richildis, whom he loved before he took his vowsand Master Bonel has been fatally poisoned by monks-hood oil from Cadfaels stores. The sheriff is convinced that the murderer is Richildiss son, Edwin, who hated his stepfather. But Cadfael, guided in part by his concern for a woman to whom he was once betrothed, is certain of her sons innocence. Using his knowledge of both herbs and the human heart, Cadfael deciphers a deadly recipe for murder.

These are another guilty pleasure for me. The third in Peter's Cadfael series, the Titular monk has to figure out how someone was killed with Monk's Hood oil made from his own workshop. The series is a classic of British Mysteries, and is well worth reading, this installment is no different.

batsy I read a few of the early ones, then stopped. I should resume! I agree, they are the perfect comfort reads. 1y

Murder by monk‘s hood (a poison) & almost everyone is a suspect, given the victim was nasty & vindictive. This story divides the despicables—the victim, the sheriff investigating the murder, the prior—from the good folks: Brother Cadfael, the suspects, their Welsh relatives etc. This is the third book in the series and I‘ve liked them all so far. Cadfael is a relatable, likeable character and I look forward to many more of his stories.

DGRachel I enjoyed what I read of this series. My mom has them all and I read them until I moved away from home and then...another series I want to get back to, someday. 5y

Brother Cadfael hides in church! Oh, when I was a kid I would have loved to have hidden behind a pillar in church. But alas, there wasn‘t one.

GingerAntics I used to hide behind the choir. It‘s the perk of being the only kid that hung out with the adult choir. lol 5y

Next up, book 3 in the Brother Cadfael series. I‘m loving these books set in England‘s most brutal civil war between King Stephen and Empress Maud over who should wear the crown when King Henry died without a son to take the throne in the 1100s. They are quick reads, too, which I appreciate. Brother Cadfael is an early one-man CSI.

Brother Cadfael is a former crusader, now monk in medieval England. He's the cloister's herbalist and doctor. These are dangerous times, and he uses his talents to solve murders. I discovered the #series through the TV show with Derek Jacobi.

Alternative_Mr_Men I remember watching Cadfael on TV with my Mum. It‘s amazing how often you can solve a crime using incriminating herbs! 6y

Rereading Cadfael while not really being bothered by the plot enables me to enjoy the layers Peters put into the characters. I enjoyed reading and meeting Brother Mark again, reading about prior Robert getting taken dowm a peg or two. Foreshadowing also on Peters part about fatherhood and lost sons. Monk's hood is at the heart of it a story about fathers, good ones, indifferent ones, fathers of the heart, fathers by faith and sometimes chance
