This was a RF that just leaves you speechless. I highly recommend this book to all ages and will definitely incorporate this as a LC or even RA in my future upper-level classrooms. The UDL I would align it to is 3.3 with processing information, and the ESOL strategy is 1 to encourage the questioning. #UCFLAE3414F19

I have mixed feelings about some elements of the ending, but that's probably to be expected. Deffo got goosebumps during the epilogue. A couple of my coworkers recommended the movie to me after I told them I was listening to the book, so it looks like that's on the to-do list now.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m super late to the game, but this definitely lives up to the hype! I recently read On the Come Up, too, and appreciate Thomas‘s creation of Garden Heights. I hope she continues to set stories there; continues to open our eyes. Gaining perspective is vital.

Reggie The part where the mother tells her about her birth and what the nurse tells her about doing the right thing. I loved that. Also I appreciated what the mother had to say about how sometimes you have to let a friend go. I don‘t think girls get that message enough. (edited) 2w
britt_brooke @Reggie I loved her parents, her mom especially. And you‘re right about girls not hearing that enough. Teenage girls can be cruel, cruel creatures. 2w

Venturing away from my nonfiction and superheroes to listen to the only YA fiction book I've had on my to-read list in ages. Bahni Turpin is an audiobook role model, and her performance is turning a narrative I already anticipated would be emotional into a truly heartrending performance.

This book made me so angry. Angry because those things are happening. Not only in America, but also around here. There are so many stereotypes in our heads and sometimes it's enormously hard to overcome them and that's why books like this need to be read. Here and now. So everybody go and read this book!

Twainy Audiobook was amazing! In my favorite books list. 2w

This book was amazing! One of my all time favourite reads to date!! I was recommended this book from my boss and she leant me her copy; thus beginning my wonderful journey that is "The Hate U Give". You really need to add this to your tbr pile and actually make time to read it! This book really opened my eyes and educated me on what life as a minority would be like. Highly recommend this book!! ?????

I read this for Banned Books Week. Although fiction it gave me new perspective in the Black Lives Matter movement.
One reason for banning, portraying the police unfairly. Sounds to me like someone who hasn‘t read it. It shows the good & bad in our justice department, the good & bad in gangs, the good & bad in people of many colors.
My favorite is that a student in TX got 4,000 petition signatures to get it in their school library.✊🏿✊🏾✊🏼✊🏻✊🏽

ElizaMarie I think this book was so good. I am glad you were able to pick it up. I think because of the genre a lot of people haven't read it and well it feels like they should. It is a great conversation starter. 1mo
PaperbackPirate @ElizaMarie It was very powerful. I kind of feel like I‘ve witnessed police brutality now. 1mo

This RF novel written by Angie Thomas has won the National Book and Coretta Scott King awards. Starr sees the uneasy balance between the poor, mostly black neighbourhoods and the rich, mostly white neighbourhoods come to life. When Starr watches her friend, a black boy, get shot and killed by a cop, she has to find her voice, not be scared, and stand up for what's right. This book represents the Black Lives Matter movement. #UCFLAE3414F19

JRone This book is great for an IR and the lesson plan http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/developing-critic... allows children to dig deeper in the Black Lives Matter movement and connect it to prior knowledge. 1mo
JRone UDL strategy 5.1, use multiple media for communication would allow children to use different resources for their research. EL strategy #36, ask numerous questions which require higher-level thinking responses is perfect to get students thinking about how this book applies to their everyday lives and the real world. 1mo
Lrobertson This book was actually turned into a movie. I think linking the 2 for older students (maybe high school because of the violence) would be a great source! 1mo
TristanPool Just from the movie trailer, this book has such a powerful message for the Black Lives Matter movement. I think it would be a great choice to include in a classroom library, so kids could see through the window of individuals that differ from them. @JRone 1mo

The truth of the book shouldn‘t be a surprise to anyone living in the US today, but told through the voice of a sixteen year old girl, it is almost unbearable. Beautifully woven, heartbreakingly real. A must read.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a Coretta Scott King honor book and New York Times Bestseller. This book is about a girl named Start who watched her best friend get shot by a white police officer. Starr doesn't know what to do but knows she has to do something so she speaks out about what happen and trying to get justice for her best friend. This book is a RF and would be a good book for LC or IR. #UCFLAE3414F19

DrSpalding Make sure you use the rubric as your guide. We will review another post in class. 2mo
AleciaM The ESOL strategy I would use for this book is #29. Offer a variety of reference material at the students' instructional level for independent use. The UDL strategy I would use would be 4.2 optimize access to tools and assistive technology.
https://b0f646cfbd7462424f7a-f9758a43fb7c33cc8adda0fd36101899.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.co...
(edited) 2mo
AleciaM I choose strategies because some ESOL students may not understand the lingo that is used thought the book. For UDL some students need to actually hear the audio book as they follow along. This would be part of their assistive technology. 2mo

wow, just wow 😯 ...I'm amazed at how Angie Thomas managed to squeeze in so much nuanced commentary on so many issues like race, class, police brutality, drug dealing and even smaller problems like toxic friendships. Starr is so interesting and multifaceted as a character and her parents are pretty awesome. really hope this becomes a classic amongst ya books in the years to come.

A YA novel that gives a great, thought provoking look into an ongoing issue in the US. Starr witnesses her best friend murdered at the hands of a police officer. She has to learn to speak up for herself, honor her friend and trust those around her again. The dialogue read easily and the relationships were believable. I loved the book and would recommend it.

Amazing story. A Must Read. The story somewhere deep inside stirs you and asks that really important question - Are you really living a life to please others, hiding who you really are?
The characters are built very nicely and with time they engrave into you as you read.
A very fragile topic discussed in a really very modest way. Looking forward to read more of Angie Thomas!
