Clare-Dragonfly Ohhhhh boy. I had a feeling when the mother started describing her children that no one else would see them the way she does, but I was not envisioning this spoiled little sociopath! And Agnes has not made a good start at all by indulging his talk and attending to him over Mary Ann 😬 13mo

Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t expect him to become a serial killer like Jack the Ripper, but if the book goes long enough for him to become an adult, I absolutely see him killing people. Maybe he‘ll become a duelist! His dad and uncle probably kill people too, just in accepted ways. Killing animals is literally one of the childhood signs of a budding serial killer. It‘s not a stretch on our parts! 13mo

AnnR Agnes was ill prepared to deal with children like this. She let Tom get the upper hand on the first day. What a sad set of circumstances for Agnes. This isn't going to go well. 13mo

dabbe Tom reminds me of John Read in Jane Eyre. Maybe he'll grow up to be an alcoholic abuser, too. And the mother is stone cold as well as the house. I sense foreboding times ahead. 13mo
