Finished my first #aam title! This was fantastic. Some of the stories were fairly disturbing, but overall I highly recommend this. I haven't been able to get into her novels, so I'm pleased I enjoyed this.

I often have a hard time gathering my thoughts about short story collections because the quality can vary so widely. Groff's collection Florida gives me no such difficulty because every story is excellent. For me, a sense of anxiety reigned, but the acknowledgement of beauty within the Southern Gothic, gorgeous(!) descriptions leant complexity to easy conclusions. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Many characters have been beaten down by something, but they find some way to fight back—sometimes in the smallest of manners, at other times with larger gestures. These are haunting and (I say again) beautiful stories. 6y

What a fun night with Lauren Groff at Politics and Prose Bookstore. Her infectious and witty personality was so refreshing. I can‘t wait to read Florida and I still need to read Fates and Furries!

"Somehow, despite her politics and smarts, she had become a wife, and wives, as we all know, are invisible. The midnight elves of marriage. The house in the country, the apartment in the city, the taxes, the dog, all were her concern: he had no idea what she did with her time. It would have been compounded with children; thank goodness for childlessness, then."
