megnews I thought the same. Seems embalming & burial techniques of that time would not render Catherine in the state Heathcliff allegedly found her. Is he insane or did Emily not bother to do much research on this topic before writing about it? Are we too sophisticated an audience for the book now? 2y

ravenlee There‘s something about the peat of the moor that can sort of mummify or preserve bodies. The sexton or someone says something about the air destroying it, but without the air effect the body would be preserved by the surrounding soil. 2y

Ruthiella I think this is just one of those things we have accept. In any case, whether her corpse is mummified or as fresh as a daisy, it goes to show how unhinged Heathcliff is. 2y

mollyrotondo These people have too much time on their hands. Digging up bodies and lying next to them in their coffins? He really meant that he did not want Catherine resting in peace. I mean to desecrate the body of someone you love is just a complete violation and yet another way Heathcliff abuses everything. 2y

nanuska_153 @TheAromaofBooks ?I don't know...I think it's the kind of thing Catherine would do too, she was also so intense... I say she loved it and that's why she stopped haunting him, she was like "FINALLY! IT TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH TO COME AND HUG MY PUTREFIED BODY YOU BASTARD!" 2y

Lollymya I can‘t understand why people love this book so much. It‘s just so morbid for words. Like reading this after Jane Austen has been sort of falling short. 2y
