This great middle grade graphic novel touches on what it's like for a kid dealing with a loved one's substance abuse problem. Anyone who grew up in the late 70's & 80's will find panels to relate to. I had to screen shot the macrame Barbie toilet paper holder because as a kid it was my most ardent desire to have one. 😂 #MG #kidlit #graphicnovel

And with this, I have completed my @bookriot #ReadHarder17 challenge!

JoRead I still have one of those 😅😁😁 6y
JoRead And congrats on completion a challenge! 6y
AmandaL @JoRead I'm a little jealous. 😁 And thank you! 6y

This was a one sitting read that contains a lot of wisdom. Part fable, part bible studies class and sprinklings of magical mythicism,Coelho explores destiny ~ MAKTUB. Now if only the gods would conspire to move the ques along. At 12:01pm they are on number 113...I've been waiting since 7:30am, I'm number 121😡😤😫 #spiritualjourney #readharder17

Cathythoughts I agree with the so/so rating. This writer never really did anything for me. 🤷‍♀️and well done to finish it 👍 (edited) 7y
batsy Tried Coelho... Not my thing, I think. 7y
Cinfhen I read another book of his and thought it was pretty flat @batsy @Cathythoughts 7y

Leniverse Uh oh. Hope you brought a second book! Although... almost there now! 7y
Captivatedbybooks Omg i tried to read Adultery in spanish it was horrible! It's been the only book i cannot finish. I made it to like page 100 and had to give up. I thought there was a bad translation than read the reviews and noticed alot of people said the book was bad. $10 down the drain! 7y
Cinfhen It may have been one of the worst books EVER @Captivatedbybooks 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @Leniverse I was done by 1:17pm and now I know carry two small books at all times!!! 7y
AmyG Now I feel better because I have never read this....and probably never will 7y
Mdargusch His books have never interested me. 7y
Reviewsbylola Wow, that is an insane wait. I have a feeling this book will be a so-so for me too which is why I haven't read it yet. 7y
Cinfhen Well at least I knocked that book off my list...longest 6 hours @Reviewsbylola I'm not a fan of Coelho @Mdargusch @AmyG 7y
Mdargusch I'm sorry I bought this book now. 😕and sorry about that crazy waiting time. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Yeah, this was a lil too predictable and "wow, aren't I just spiritual and deep?" to me. ? 7y

3.5-4🌟 this book was hilarious, fast read with a teacher's pov (the author used to be a teacher!) I found myself reading aloud or sending screenshots of certain lines to my friends throughout the book, very funny. The only thing I didn't love about the book was some of the language she used- it seemed too informal somehow? However I totally would recommend this for a fun/light read! #romantsy
Book 6 of summer
Also this is a #debut, #ReadHarder17

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

This was brilliant and funny and a cracking debut novel but I lament the lack of a stronger editor.
What interested me most about this book was the comparison of the counterculture revolutionaries of the 1960s, and the Occupy Wall Street Movement of 2011.
The Nix poses interesting questions about, well ... just about everything - online culture, changing politics, war, police brutality, failure and regret.

Marchpane Great review Trudie 👍 this looks terrific (might pick it up when I have the mental bandwidth for a big book 😄) 7y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane I recommend, maybe with some cautionary notes about waffling but it had me laughing and I think overall it's worth your time 😀 7y

ClairesReads Good to fit it in for the #readharder as well as #tob 😄 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads : A double bonus !. I actually had another book lined up for the debut task but then I realised that this is Hills first novel - which is really hard to fathom as you expect first novels to be small, thin, tentative things ! Not a barnstorming 600pg plus multigenerational doorstop.... 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles definitely an impressive first effort! 7y
BkClubCare Did you read his Acknowledgement thank you to his "Periwinkle-like" editor? Made me chuckle. I enjoyed The Nix very much. (edited) 7y
Redheadrambles @BkClubCare haha yes I did ! That was really cool. I would really like to hear him talk on this novel actually, if he ever makes it to NZ on a book tour. 7y

abbiereadsbooks Ohhhh I loved The Book Thief! I read it when I was younger and then again for a Lit for Adolescents class in college. 7y
Chessa @Texreader @abbiereadsbooks Yay! I'm super looking forward to that one, it's been on my TBR for YEARS! It also fulfills a #ReadHarder17 task, so it's a twofer (Read a book about war). 7y
tpixie Yes! It's been on by TBR forever I don't know what is stopping made from reading it. 7y

This was a YA romp through the Greek Underworld starring Persephone and Hades...who is in fact, also a woman. The storytelling is a little simplistic, but I'm all for portraying positive #lgbtq romances in this day and age. #betterworldbookchallenge #fairytale #readharder #readharder17 #lgbtqromance #rc18 #lgbtqrelationship

Book 2 in the series and I still think this is Lorelai meets Marvel. I say that for the fast talking, sometimes non-relevant to the story of our main squirrel. This time there is an evil squirrel who is causing fights to break out all over. And of course only Squirrel girl can save the day. #Beatthebacklist #Hedwig - Squirrel girl has her pet squirrel and the roommate has her cat. #belovedpet #readharder17
