Not the best book on the 1916 New Jersey shark attacks but still a decent fictionalized read

The tale ended up dragging on too long with characters you don‘t much care about but the details on the time period were the best part: coming WWI with evil German u-boot Deutschland (Maybe GERMAN SHARKS! 😟), scandalous flapper bobs, scary polio epidemic, etc etc

It is much layed out like what Jaws is with ppl panicking & killing any shark they find…

Soscha …BECAUSE humans, as ever, suck necrotic donkey balls in relation to wildlife, particularly sharks. 1mo
Soscha Fellow shark fanatics: Great White or Bull? 1mo
TheQuietQuill Love the Great White sharks as they‘re such highly misunderstood creatures! As for Bull Sharks, they are certainly more aggressive and will keep coming back to bite. However, the Great Whites got such a bad rap after Jaws. While they are still terrifying, I absolutely love them! 🦈 1mo
Soscha Do you follow Ocean Ramsey? If not you absolutely need to! She swims with all the “man-eaters”, Great Whites, Bull Sharks & Oceanic Whitetips! It‘s all above directing them always if they approach too closely. There are no “bad dogs” and no “bad sharks”! 😌🦈 https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKaVUolhzCR/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== 1mo
Soscha Apologies for all the stoopid grammatical typos! 1mo

Judy Blume was an eighth grader in Elizabeth, New Jersey, when 3 airplanes crashed into her town over the course of 2 months. In this book, she tells a fictionalized version of the residents living (& some dying) in these unfathomable events. She conveys the very traumatic experience for young adults and teenagers. while told from a young teenager‘s perspective, it is an adult novel. At the end of each chapter, she includes narrative from the ⬇️

Texreader Elizabeth newspaper, sometimes about the crashes, and more often news of the world. This puts the reader into a deeper perspective of how this affected the town. I found the story very well written, and hard to put down. It felt important to know how everyone coped and how it affected their lives. Definitely recommended. #authoramonth 1mo

I finally googled it to confirm that the events in the book are based on true events. Yep. 3 plane crashes in December 1951-January 1952 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. #authoramonth @Soubhiville

Parts of this book were great. Unfortunately, the excessive number of POVs was confusing and distracting. As a person who has grown up in a family of pilots, I did find the multiple crashes rather terrifying. I really wanted to like this book because I loved Judy Blume as a kid, but it was a miss. #authoramonth @Soubhiville

I read Are You There God… when I was much closer to the demographic target, so this looked like an interesting change of pace. I snapped it up when it was offered in my free cycle group.

It was a compelling story of coming of age amidst tragedy. For the most part I was pulled along and wanted to know how the story turned out, but some of the plot verged melodrama with characters that got on my nerves. #authoramonth

Susanita Now it‘s headed to the LFL along with a cookbook I never opened and a couple other books I found in my mini bookcase reorg. 2mo

Well written and well researched, filled with facts and true stories, this historical fiction novel is steeped in a strong sense of time and place. I loved it! Palisades Amusement Park in New Jersey no longer exists, but it comes to life in rich detail in this story. The main character‘s pursuit of a daring career in an age where women were not encouraged to do such things deftly ties the book‘s many narratives together.

#ReadOrDonate for July

MemoirsForMe Are you from NJ? I remember going to Palisades Park when I was a kid. Great fun! 2mo
julieclair @Memoirs4Me Yes! I was born in Paterson, but grew up in Wyckoff, in Bergen County. I don‘t remember ever going to Palisades Park, but I can still sing the jingle… it was running through my head as I read this book, lol. 🎶 Palisades has the rides, Palisades has the fun, Come on over… 🎶 2mo
Aims42 I loved this book so much! It‘s one I like to re-read every now and then to revisit 😄 2mo

My July choice for #ReadOrDonate is Palisades Park, historical fiction about a legendary amusement park near where I grew up in New Jersey. What will everyone else be reading and/or donating?

AmyG I grew up near there, too…in Bergen County. 3mo
Amiable I read this one —I don‘t think I enjoyed it very much. I think I was disappointed because I liked this one so much: 3mo

julieclair @AmyG @Read4life I was born in Paterson, too! At the old Paterson General, which no longer exists. And I grew up in Bergen County, In Wyckoff. But our church was in Paterson - in the Totowa section. So I kind of grew up in both places, Wyckoff and Paterson. 3mo
