I got a bit off track last week with the daily prompts (just busy with life), but getting back to it starting today!

Mark Twain is one of my favorite authors, and while he is very much appreciated, this book is super underrated and not nearly as well known as his novels about Tom & Huck. This book is Twain‘s memoir of his years after Life on the Mississippi, when he traveled through the American West.

My mom just sent me three more of my Dad‘s books. This was one of them, and looks like it‘s been...roughing it. Really cool to find my dad‘s inscription inside and these two cards stuck inside the pages. Apparently both sites are still standing and Mark Twain once spoke at the opera house. that saloon‘s name though 😂 !!

Finally getting around to reading this book by one of my favorite authors that has been on my shelf for a while.

Getting through Roughing It was ... uh, rough. I love Mark Twain‘s humor and wit - but wow the overt and repeated racism was too much for this memoir to be enjoyable. There was quite a bit of material I skimmed - Tall tales, involved anecdotes of dubious worth, etc.

It did, however, have redeeming points, such as:
A firsthand account of the stagecoach from St. Joe to the Nevada Territory
The Pony Express
Hawaii (Sandwich Islands) 150 years ago

Another late post for yesterday‘s prompt - I definitely think that Twain‘s non-fiction gets forgotten when compared to the acclaim for his novels, but there is so much enjoyment to be had in books like Roughing It. This autobiographical account follows Twain as he sets out for the west in the 1860s, and dabbles in being a secretary, miner, and eventually reporter. Full of his characteristic wit and satire.

It was exciting at first! I was reading it with an approach of "learning how it was back then", book had a tasteful amount of sarcasm which I also enjoy.
But as new stories kept on coming and coming started feeling like, when is it gonna end?

It is a sarcastic diary of a character that goes through a crazy amount of things in his life. Perhaps a chapter a week, like Simpsons, could have kept my interest all through the book.

While certainly not underrated himself, Mark Twain‘s non-fiction books definitely don‘t get enough love these days. Twain is often at his funniest in books like Roughing It. Twain had set out with his brother into the western American frontier, and he recorded all he experienced. They worked from town to town doing various odd jobs, reporter, lecturer, gold prospector. A delightful and educational work from a legend. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
