Yosemite | John Muir

1. Many years ago, my grandmother took a winter trip through Yosemite where they rode big transport buses on the cleared roads in the park. I guess they stayed in the lodges at night? Anyway, it sounded like a fun winter vacation.
2. I would bring a tote bag full of books and then spend most of my time looking out the windows.

TheSpineView Sounds beautiful but cold. A fireplace and a book would make it perfect. 1y

I wanted to like this more than I actually did. Muir made this journey only a couple of years after the US Civil War, but the casual racism he exhibits whenever he runs into or writes about Black people is still really jarring. I wish there had been more pictures of the areas he traveled through.

I‘m about halfway through this short book. Wash has his paw on my knee as if to say, “But you could be paying attention to me.”

IndoorDame Beautiful kitty!🐈 1y
CBee He‘s lovely 😊 1y
KathyWheeler Thank you both. We think he might be a Maine Coon. He‘s a rescue and was very tiny when we got him. Now he‘s over 16 pounds and isn‘t even a year old yet. He‘s not overweight though — just big. 1y
sarahbellum Ooo what a fluffy beaut! 😻 1y
KathyWheeler @sarahbellum I think he‘s the fluffiest cat we‘ve ever had. 1y

Tonight‘s reading. I can‘t imagine walking that far!

Reggie I‘m sure you‘ve walked that this year on your walks, no? 1y
Reggie Also, last year when I went hiking in rural Colorado I gained a new appreciation for the settlers. Lol 1y
KathyWheeler @Reggie No! My total so far this year is 475 miles. I bet you did. I‘ve only been to Colorado once — to Denver for a conference. I‘d like to go back. 1y

A small painting inspired by John Muir‘s yosemite, nothing causes daydreams like that place. Sorry it‘s a lil off topic, but I often paint scenes from books so I figured this may be interesting to some

thereadingpal Such a pretty painting! I haven't read the book and I don't know what it's about, but your drawing is beautiful 2y

#30daysofgratitude

Nov 27 #optoutside prompt - REI hosts the #optoutside challenge every year. They close their stores on Black Friday and encourage everyone to go outside for fresh air and adventure. #Optoutside today. Go for a walk. Step outside on your porch. Take a deep breath and be thankful. We are so lucky to live in a world with adventure and the great outdoors. https://www.rei.com/opt-outside

TheSpineView Headed to the barn in a little bit. Myself and a small group are going on a trail ride. Perfect weather today to enjoy the outdoors and what better way to experience it but from horseback. 3y

Stickeen | John Muir

Pickpick

John Muir was a Scottish-American naturalist who is known as the "Father of the National Parks". Stickeen recounts Muir's exploration of an Alaskan glacier with a funny little dog (Stickeen) and the hair-raising predicament they ultimately find themselves in.

This is a wonderful short story I would recommend to anyone who likes a quick adventure or loves dogs, or both. It was a fun compliment to the book I just read, Two in the Far North.
