I loved reading this book. It was just so beautifully written. I wholeheartedly believe that I wouldn't have gotten as much out if it if it weren't for my #HashtagBrigade crew (thanks as always for hosting @BarkingMadRead). Also added the CloseReads podcast to this reading (thank you again @Daisey)

The Ambassadors | Henry James

Officially kicking off the #turnthepage readathon today!

My goal is to just make headway in any or all of the three novels I have on the go at the moment. Unfortunately I have work tomorrow and a busy weekend with some drive time. But I do have the Fleming and the James titles available on audio via Hoopla, so maybe I can listen a bit, if I‘m not too stressed by traffic. 🤞

Bookwormjillk Stay away traffic and LET US READ! Good luck with it all. I hope you find some quiet time. 7h

I enjoyed this book, but I don‘t think I would have as much reading it all on my own. I tend to enjoy more plot focused stories, and this was definitely character focused. Additionally, it was a bit difficult to stay connected sometimes when it skipped chunks of time and revealed major changes from those periods. The narration by Jeremy Irons was great, and absolutely helped my appreciation.

mabell My husband and I love Jeremy Irons‘ voice! It‘s a tie between he and George Sanders for our choice of phone book reader 😂 14h

Frankenstein: Or, the Modern Prometheus | Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

This is such a small book with such big ideas. The Creature, although driven to perform evil deeds, is not in himself evil, which a lot of adaptations omit (I am looking forward to the new one to see if they change this). A lot of this book discusses the loneliness of existence and how others treat those who are different, which is relatable to many. Truly a masterpiece.

Doppoetry Henry was my favorite character, and I was devastated when he was killed. 😭 20h

I really enjoyed the re-read. It‘s been decades since I first read it and I got a lot more out of it this second time around. That‘s the beauty of classics and modern classics- they reward multiple reads. While I still prefer the idyllic first section with young (and in love IMO) Charles and Sebastian, I appreciate as an older person the bittersweet feelings for one‘s youth.

Thank you for leading the charge @BarkingMadRead 😊

Oliver Twist | Dickens

Meet Oliver, we adopted him last night from one of our local rescues. He‘s slowly settling in. The name inspiration was not the book but my husband‘s grad school mentor, Dr. Oliver Smithies. While my husband was in grad school Oliver won the Nobel Prize. His mentorship & guidance made my husband the scientist he is today. Oliver had such a huge impact on our lives, so we found a way to honor him.

KadaGul Welcome to the fam, Oliver! It's time to flood us with cute fur baby pictures. 🧡🐕🤎🐾💛 1d

KAO I also really enjoyed this book—until the ending! So bizarre! Thank you for leading the way through this one! (edited) 1d
Ruthiella The ending can be considered a happy one because Julia and Charles have found their faith, which is (for some) richer than any earthly romantic or marital tie. This is what the Christian focused podcast “Close Reads” pointed out. Thanks @Daisey for bringing the podcast to my attention. I certainly would not have picked up on the conversion undercurrent on my own. (edited) 1d
Cuilin @Ruthiella Agree. I think the “forerunner” talk is about Charles‘ journey to catholicism. That is really what the book is about. Waugh himself described it as an operation of Devine Grace between connected characters. It was wonderful reading it with everybody. Thank you. @BarkingMadRead 1d
lil1inblue @Cuilin @ruthiella I think that's why I found the book so fascinating. I wasn't raised in any religion, so a lot of it is outside my personal understanding. This gave me a different perspective of faith. 1d
willaful I found the ending sad. Like so many jerk men, apparently, Charles finally realizes he missed a chance to know his children. (Or at least his son. 🙄 )

If the point of the story was that Charles was missing some part of humanity because he hadn't found faith, phooey I say.
23h
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Charles has found religion? I don‘t get that at ALL. I guess he does talk to Nanny and go to the chapel in the epilogue…? 18h
Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was more about Brideshead, the place, and how it‘s changing so much and going away and that‘s sad. 18h
Crinoline_Laphroaig Did this have some beautifull crafted prose? Yes. Did I care about any of the characters? No. Put this in the category of 'it's a classic, I've read it, now I never have to again.' To be honest I actually skimmed, read a synopsis, and then read the ending a few days ago just to be done with it.

kwmg40 Like @lil1inblue, I wasn't raised in any religion, so I too find books examining faith interesting. Loved the beautiful prose, the characters not so much. Thanks @BarkingMadRead for hosting! 15h
ElizaMarie I feel like the ending gives us a little bit of hope. With Charles having found his faith and being back at Brideshead, he has an opportunity to be serene and work at Brideshead (I think his true love). 2h
