They Left Us Everything
They Left Us Everything: A Memoir | Plum Johnson
14 posts | 10 read | 19 to read
A warm, heartfelt memoir of family, loss, and a house jam-packed with decades of goods and memories. After almost twenty years of caring for elderly parentsfirst for their senile father, and then for their cantankerous ninety-three-year old motherauthor Plum Johnson and her three younger brothers have finally fallen to their middle-aged knees with conflicted feelings of grief and relief. Now they must empty and sell the beloved family home, twenty-three rooms bulging with history, antiques, and oxygen tanks. Plum thought: How tough will that be? I know how to buy garbage bags. But the task turns out to be much harder and more rewarding than she ever imagined. Items from childhood trigger difficult memories of her eccentric family growing up in the 1950s and 60s, but unearthing new facts about her parents helps her reconcile those relationships, with a more accepting perspective about who they were and what they valued. They Left Us Everything is a funny, touching memoir about the importance of preserving family history to make sense of the past, and nurturing family bonds to safeguard the future. From the Hardcover edition.

1. Tough one! Louise Penny, Jon Krakauer, Robert Kolker?

2. Uncle Pumblechook, Gradgrind, (Dickens is full of crazy character names), Bean (in Louise Penny's A Rule Against Murder - it's a plot point in the story)

3. Tagged

I was bored and should have bailed. I couldn‘t relate to the author or her story. She advises not to clean and organize, but leave your accumulated belongings for your children to sort so they can learn your story. I disagree. I usually don‘t pan someone‘s memoir, but there are so many good books that I could‘ve spent my time reading 😐. 1/5⏳s

Hooked_on_books As someone who has had to help clean the house of a near-hoarder father after his death, I heartily disagree with this author. Talking to your family members and creating a bond is a much better idea. (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Hooked_on_books - Exactly. It's a bit much to expect your kids to understand you just by sifting through all your stuff like some kind of archeological dig lol Lately my mom has been downsizing some of her stuff, and we stop by and go through a lot of it together before she gives it away. I realize not everyone lives close enough to their parents to make that happen, but some form of communication about the stuff is much more meaningful. 4y
Susanita Yeah no. I can speak from both personal and vicarious experience that actively expecting your family to sort all your crap is a terrible idea. 4y

#GetBack to where you once belonged 🎶🎶

I've heard about this book a number of times, but I never knew it takes place in Oakville, where I was born and raised. Once I learned that, I just had to pick it up from the library!

An excellent memoir about a daughter dealing with the emotional stress and physical reality of her parents‘ estate after her mother‘s death. It will resonate more perhaps with those of us in middle age who are dealing with aging parents or grandparents but the family history is very engaging and house proves itself the most interesting character of all. 4.5⭐️

RebelReader Sounds like my kind of book! 6y
CatLass007 I don‘t know if I‘d like it or not. I take care of my 88-year-old mother who has Alzheimer‘s and I‘m the executor of her estate. I know it‘s going to be hard someday. 6y
BookHermit @CatLass007 Perhaps not but maybe a comfort someday? It‘s very well done and many humours and thoughtful passages. I laughed and cried in equal measure 🙂 6y
CatLass007 Maybe someday. 6y
Lindy @RebelReader @BookHermit I was pleasantly surprised by this memoir. I don‘t know why I wasn‘t it expecting it to be as good as it was. 6y

I can't imagine living like Plum did taking care of her elderly parents. Even the family life when everyone was much younger is something I can't wrap my head around.

A must read for individuals dealing with eldercare issues, this memoir is a gem. an intimate look at family dynamics, mother/daughter relationships and life and loss. It's a book that will make you appreciate spending time with family while you still have the chance --even the difficult family members.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

[DELETED] 2232195534 I've got this one in my audiobook library. Will listen to it soon. Suspect I will like it and many things will have me nodding my head. 8y
Bakingbookworm This is a very hot book at the library where I work. All of our copies are always out and quite a few book clubs have selected it. I'm going to have to get in line soon. I've heard nothing but great things about it. 8y

"It's the moment every adult child dreads: losing a parent, and gaining a home jam-packed with decades of goods and memories."

Megabooks So afraid of this! 8y
BibliophileBytheSea @Ebooksandcooks I know what you mean. I do love a good memoir and I think this will hit the mark. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I've done this. It is hard and wonderful and tiring and bittersweet. Need to read this book. 8y
BibliophileBytheSea @kaysreadinglife . My parents have been gone almost 30 years and, fortunately they did like clutter so clearing the house wasn't a massive job. A few sweet things that were save surprised me😭 8y
