pickI actually finished this up last night. It has been a weird day—at 6:24am kids‘ school was cancelled due to fires. At 8 husband cancelled his classes, at 9 his CC closed. Air is crap. Took kid 2 and got a box of Boy Scout wreaths to deliver. Watched too much fire news. Did little reading. Got no exercise. Kid 2 is stir crazy. No school tomorrow! Little reading will happen.... maybe kid 2 and I will watch this movie. He loved this play!
Next up in my modern fiction slot. My high school freshman just read this in his English class, and he loved it. He wants me to read it and then he wants to watch the movie (unless they are watching it in class). And to think he was nervous about reading a play!

Watching/reading Fences and trying to decide if I want to assign it for the drama unit in my literature class. I usually teach Raisins in the Sun, but our new text doesn't have it. This new adaptation with Denzel Washington and Viola Smith is sooooo good.
Perhaps our favorite speech from last night's awards ceremony was Viola Davis accepting the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. What an incredible and powerful speech.
She won for her role in Fences, a film adapted from the play of the same name by August Wilson. She's the first black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award for acting! 💃🏿

pickHoping to see the movie next weekend and wanted to read the play first. If the movie is 1/2 as good as the experience of reading the play, it will be magnificent.

pickSaw the movie New Years Eve and wanted to read the play! Both are just incredible and it translated to the screen very effectively. The characters are so deeply developed. I'm going to read more plays this year. They are quick reads and so satisfying.

Having seen the movie trailer, my mind's eye saw Viola Davis' "Rose" throughout this read. Happy scenes, sad scenes -- Viola was who I saw. But my mind registered relatives and friends. This quote is a testament to how a woman loves her man. Brings Aretha's "Try a Little Tenderness" to mind.

As early as page 3, this play had hold of me. My Daddy wasn't a garbage man. But he was a blue-collar worker -- a hard-working man like Troy and Bono. And these three traits were prominent in his character. "Fences" is a heart-warming story set in 1950s Pittsburgh. Some of the characters and phrases remind me of my upbringing in a Midwest steel town. I'm familiar with Wilson's other works; and looking forward to reading them all. #quote
We went to see Fences today. Wow - what a great movie. The story was stellar, and the performances were outstanding. I can't recommend this one enough.
pickI just finished an impromptu read of August Wilson's "Fences." Wanted to read it before seeing the adaption this weekend. It was a very quick read (1) because of the page count; and (2) because the scenes, characters, and dialect are so familiar from my childhood. I felt like I was reading about people I or my family members knew. Every character is believable; and a few are endearing. I was fortunate to find a PDF before hardcover comes in.

pickGot this one from My LitBox. So much of this play hit home for me. My childhood, my father, my mother. This book healed a part of me that I never thought would be healed, but more than that, it's wonderfully written and pushes you to confront thoughts you're not entirely comfortable with facing. You're better for it in the end, though.

so-soEh... I'm glad I read it for the sake of having read August Wilson. This was one of those novels that made me hate the book because I hated the protagonist so very much. This Death of a Salesman but a black family. Im ready to watch the adaptation at Christmas time.

Second book of #biblioweekend. Beautiful collector's edition of Fences by August Wilson. I saw it's being adapted, so I better read it now. Oh... And ice cream just because.
