The Heart Of A Woman | Maya Angelou
post image
Pickpick

Another fascinating trio into the fascinating life of Maya Angelou. It opens with a brilliant portrait of an aging Billie Holliday spending days in Maya's home, moves to NY + Maya involved in the civil rights movement as well as acting + bringing up her son, before her setting off the Africa with her South African freedom fighter husband. What a life. Written poetically but so compelling a tale, you can't put it down.

Cathythoughts Great review. 9mo

Because I can‘t resist making new grids on PicCollage, here‘s my aspirational #serieslove2025 reading plan for Black History Month.

#25Alive!

A little #Laughter quote from the amazing Maya Angelou.

"My great hope is to laugh as much as I cry; to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return." ???

Her writing flows over you like water, and she led such an interesting life. I‘d like to dive into the next installment, but I still have three physical library books I need to finish soon. One of them is from another series that‘s also nearing the end, so I‘ll keep pausing the García Saenz for now. #serieslove2025

Andrew65 Excellent 👏👏👏 Always tricky to fit in library books. 10mo

And Still I Rise | Maya Angelou

Yes, hope is battered and bruised because she's always the last one standing. Never, ever, bloody ever give up.
Given the state of the world we live in now and what's to come, I've decided that my reading theme for 2025 will be politics and current affairs. I aim to be more informed, more politically active on a local, national and global front, supporting communities and holding true to my firm belief of a fair, equal and just society for all.

Bookwormjillk I love this. I look forward to your reviews. I tried to read about global warming this year and want to continue next year. 12mo
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk having an annual theme really helps focus my reading and learning. I can't say enjoy your deep dive into global warming as it is such a worrying subject. Make sure you balance it out with stories of hope like rewilding and regeneration 🙂 12mo

psalva I‘ve got few words in this moment, so all I can say is I‘m with you. 12mo
Librarybelle ❤️❤️❤️ 12mo
Megabooks I've read more books about politics and political history this year than I have in years (maybe since my poll sci degree). I've also done a deep dive into ex-vangelicals. As much as I want to put my head in the sands at times, I'm glad to have spent this year engaged and learning. Like you, I hope to continue it into the future. Excited to see what you read! 12mo
BarbaraJean Yesssss. I posted a poem yesterday that has this same perspective on hope—it‘s called “Hope Is Not a Bird, Emily, It‘s a Sewer Rat” by Caitlin Seida. That‘s the kind of hope I need right now. Tough and tenacious. (edited) 12mo
kspenmoll Thank you for this.💛 12mo
AllDebooks @Megabooks I've checked my Kindle sociopolitical folder and there's almost 150 titles I've accumulated without realising. Do you have any recommendations? 12mo
AllDebooks @BarbaraJean ❤️ I'll check out the poem. 12mo
Bookwormjillk @AllDebooks yes balance is the key. I also want to read more about social media and how it‘s influencing people. 12mo
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk that's on my list, too. When I've finished it, I'll post a document link to my planned reading. Happy for anyone to join me. I'll be using it for my #Roll100 2025 list @PuddleJumper 12mo
Megabooks Foreign Agents and The Wolves of K Street were released this year and give a good overview of lobbying by outside and inside forces. The Kingdom, The Power, and The Glory by Tim Alberta is one of the best books I've read about Christian Nationalism. Homegrown by Jeffery Toobin about McVeigh was interesting from a historical perspective. The Undocumented Americans is great. The Color of Law is a great look at redlining. 12mo
Megabooks Autocracy Inc. is a short but powerful look at networks of dictators around the globe. Red and Blue by Kornacki is a good look at the 1990s origins of modern political tribalism. They Came for Our Schools is an interesting look at school censorship and how it affects teachers and students. The Quiet Damage about QAnon and the families it affects was fascinating and sad. Fancy Bear Goes Fishing explores Russian cybercrimes. 12mo
Megabooks Jesus and John Wayne is another good perspective on the history of Christian Nationalism. I hope you find a couple of these interesting!! 12mo
