How did that happen?

Both books are about 700-800 pages long and exam phase is starting. I need reading material.

Pickpick

Everyone said I would cry. When I found myself on the last page with dry eyes I thought I was a monster. Then I read the last line and I starting bawling. I guess that's what happens when you ball up 700 pages of trauma into two days of reading. How far did you make it before you broke?
#alittlelife

violabrain I read the last hundred pages or so with tears streaming down my face as I stayed up way too late reading. I remember that night as vividly as I remember this book. I had to read a bunch of scientific books after this because I couldn‘t bear to read any fiction. It‘s such an incredible book! 4y
JD_Clarke @violabrain Solid strategy. I'm actively seeking recommendations for a read that will pull me out of the funk it left me in. 4y
violabrain @JD_Clarke I read The Gene afterwards. It was a good one to read afterwards - engaging, unemotional, and long enough that by the time I finished it, I was over my funk. (edited) 4y

It was...long. Too long. Glad I read it but it was NOT the emotional tearjerker so many people have claimed it to be.

CuriousG Emotional, but worth every tear! 4y

A little bit of "light" reading over the Christmas break. I started each of these books in 2016, but they've taken me a while to get through because of the nature of the content, especially #ALittleLife, which has been heartbreaking to read.

Day 20 of #Emojimadness ⏳reminds me of #ALittleLife bc a lot of time has passed since I added it to my #TBR. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤗

“Brace yourself for the most astonishing, challenging, upsetting, and profoundly moving book... An epic about love and friendship in the 21st century that goes into some of the darkest places fiction has ever traveled and yet somehow improbably breaks through into the light. Truly an amazement—and a great gift for its readers.”

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve had it a while too!!! 6y
britt_brooke My least favorite book cover of all time. 🙈 I‘ve not read it, and don‘t have any plans to. Sounds so depressing. 6y
Jess7 @britt_brooke the leader of my book club in real life said it was incredible. I‘ve gotta attempt it at some point - I just wish it wasn‘t soooo long! 6y
See All 29 Comments
britt_brooke @Jess7 The length is super intimidating especially knowing how sad it is. I‘ve seen so many good reviews, though. 6y
Susanbones I AM CURRENTLY READING THIS. As someone who is generally into darker stuff, sometimes I have to put the book down, take a minute and remind myself that it‘s all fiction. BUT I always pick it up again and fly through the next few pages! I actually really enjoy how it‘s written. You will fly through the first third of the book and the middle part is where it gets a tad difficult but still great nonetheless! Love this book so far but it‘s not for all 6y
JamieArc I added this to my TBR this year since I‘m doing #yearofthechunkster but the emotional weight scares me... 6y
Susanbones @JamieArc True! IMO, you need to be in a specific headspace to be able to read this book. 6y
JamieArc @Susanbones I‘ll have to make sure I have some light fluffy reading to accompany it. I‘m glad I‘m prepared for it before starting it though. 6y
Susanbones @JamieArc Yes! That‘s the ideal setup. I dove into the book without knowing what it was about!! I just saw someone wearing a shirt referencing the book on TV and I went out and got it! 6y
SandyW I've been putting off reading this one too! 6y
kgriffith I‘ve been “currently reading” this one for a year? I think I‘m just terrified to get into the emotional upheaval. I‘ve been warned and also still pressured to read it 😬 6y
YouReadMyEyes It ripped my guts out at times, but I could not put it down. 6y
azulaco Oh, this book. Five stars, but it was really emotionally hard to read in parts. 6y
lorannen I still can't bring myself to read this one, and that's mostly because of the literally cringe-y cover! 6y
haileybean I‘ve heard mixed things about this book. I partly want to read it to form my own opinion, but I also don‘t want to be emotionally scarred yet. (This is why I haven‘t read a couple of highly regarded books ie, All the Light We Cannot See, The Book Thief, Imagine Me Gone, etc. ) (edited) 6y
klarusu I read this a while ago - it was fantastic but it's rare I feel quite so bruised by a book. The characterisation was brilliant - I missed them when I finished. I couldn't bring myself to reread though. 6y
klarusu The UK paperback cover when I bought it was much nicer! 6y
Jess7 @haileybean - The Book Thief wasn‘t emotionally scarring. There were sad parts for sure - bc the narrator is death, but I dont think it would be on the same level of emotional-ness as this one. Have you read The Heart‘s Invisible Furies? I recommend it bc it‘s equal parts heart wrenching and heart warming. A good balance of both helps! 6y
Jess7 I saw the other cover option, but strangely I don‘t mind this cover! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think it probably represents the pain of the main character. But the other one is a good option if someone doesn‘t like this one @klarusu @britt_brooke @lorannen 6y
lorannen @Jess7 Thanks for the recommendation! Looked it up so now I'll know what to look for! That is much more palatable. From everything I've read, with the author fighting for this particular cover image and whatnot, I'm sure it's a good representation for the book - just wish I didn't have such a visceral reaction to it! 6y
klarusu @jess7 & @lorannen Yep, I can see the logic but I'm an odd egg and really prefer covers without people on them because I like the words to form an image of the characters without preconceptions on my part. 6y
Jess7 Maybe we need to all read it together this year - we could conquer the heartbreak together 🤷🏻‍♀️🤗 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @britt_brooke @Susanbones @JamieArc @kgriffith @lorannen 💕 6y
britt_brooke @Jess7 This cover is a photo called “The Orgasmic Man.” You might see it differently now, ha! 🙃 6y
Jess7 Haha! I can see that lol @britt_brooke have you looked at the UK cover? It‘s probably available on book depository 6y
britt_brooke @Jess7 That‘s a much more attractive cover. 👍🏻👍🏻 I have a copy with orgasm guy on it (I picked up for $1 at my library‘s last sale), but I doubt I‘ll ever read it. I had a fleeting moment where I thought maybe, but it just doesn‘t sound like something I‘d like. I‘ll be curious to see what you think about it. 6y
Susanbones @Jess7 I‘m halfway through!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Jess7 we definitely should!!!! 6y
Jess7 I have it on kindle, but I can‘t decide if Id rather read it in print or some combination there of just to better gauge where I am at in it. I wish you had the pretty cover - you would probably be more apt to read it @britt_brooke 🤗🤗 6y
JamieArc @kgriffith Yes, exactly! @jess7 I‘d be up for a buddy read of this one! 6y

Pickpick

Read this in early 2017. Absolutely wonderful while at the same time devastatingly heartbreaking. I fell in love with the characters and their lives. This is hands down the most emotional reading experience I‘ve ever had. It is one of the best novels I've ever read and, yet, I will likely never read it again because it broke my heart.

Cathythoughts Yes, I agree. So very good. But I would not be reading it again either. ❤️ 6y
