Undoing Depression
Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach You and Medication Can't Give You | Richard O'Connor
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Like heart disease, says psychotherapist Richard O'Connor, depression is fueled by complex and interrelated factors: genetic, biochemical, environmental. In this refreshingly sensible book, O'Connor focuses on an additional factor often overlooked: our own habits. Unwittingly we get good at depression. We learn how to hide it, how to work around it. We may even achieve great things, but with constant struggle rather than satisfaction. Relying on these methods to make it through each day, we deprive ourselves of true recovery, of deep joy and healthy emotion. UNDOING DEPRESSION teaches us how to replace depressive patterns with a new and more effective set of skills. We already know how to "do" depression-and we can learn how to undo it. With a truly holistic approach that synthesizes the best of the many schools of thought about this painful disease, O'Connor offers new hope-and new life-for sufferers of depression.

Richard gives examples of what his patients go through with their depression and psychoanalyze them. He explains causes of depression and explains what therapy he gives them. He teaches coping strategies and shows people what they can‘t see due to their depression. He also includes lessons from his own depression. He evaluates treatment. He shows what kinds of thoughts lead to or worsen depression and how to change them. Good book.

So something I never thought I would do... I just got back today from 3 weeks (!) in a mental health hospital. I really needed it and am feeling much better, though I had an "attack", if that's the word, of incredible sensory overload earlier this evening. I've been keeping a low profile on Litsy (and not reading nearly enough between work and individual and group sessions) but just wanted to share.

I‘m after Littens advice. My friend recently told me that she has been diagnosed with depression and is struggling. I wanted to get her a book of poetry to help her. This obviously will not compare with proper treatment but I wanted to help her. Can anyone recommend anything that has helped them or anyone they know?

tessavi Sorry, I don't read poems but just wanted to say that is a great gesture! Rediscovering my love for reading helped me through my depression. 6y
WordyForever So I did some googling and found Eclipse by Andrew Jantz, which is apparently a book of poems about his own struggle and recovery from depression. Not sure if that would help your friend 🤷🏻‍♀️ if you were going for something uplifting, I would go with short love poems. Maybe a book of Shakespeare‘s sonnets? I also recommend Leave Her Wild by Atticus 6y
Sills @Emma3 I work at a bookstore part-time and will do some research next week🙂 6y

I had a bad day and need some cheering up. All the books I have out on overdrive are depressing. Recommendations for light contemporary reads?

rabbitprincess I don't have any suggestions but hope tomorrow is a better day! 6y
RebelReader This one made me smile 6y
DGRachel When I need cheering up, I reach for Penny Reid‘s contemporary romances. She injects a lot of humor in her books. I don‘t read much contemporary lit fiction, so I don‘t have any lighter reads to recommend there, but Penny always makes me smile. I hope you feel better soon! 6y
