The African Queen
The African Queen | C. S. Forester

The film of this famous love and adventure story which starred Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart became one of the most popular films ever made. The African Queen is an old, dirty, ugly, unreliable steamboat - not the kind of boat anyone would take down a dangerous river through the jungles of Central Africa. But Rose Sayer and Charlie Allnut do just that. Why do they do it? The First World War has just begun, and Rose has a crazy plan. She and Charlie set off down the river and come close to death many times, but they survive all dangers - except the danger of falling in love.

I'm late posting, but I did finish June's book in my personal 2022 Modern Library Challenge. A mixed reaction from me, as the writing style was “British-formal“ and seemed pretty dated. And it's basically a Romance which isn't my typical genre. But I did enjoy it.

I was surprised how well Forester handled the sex - he is franker than I expected while still maintaining his 1930s respectability.

I have a lot of conflicting feelings about this #bookspin choice. I picked it because it's by my dad's favorite author and I liked the movie growing up.

Even though it's an exciting adventure story, any real enjoyment I might have taken out of reading it was overwhelmed by it's racist language and attitudes. I don't think I'll be revisiting this one in the future, but I'm glad it's off my TBR :)

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes it's hard to read a book from a different era, when attitudes and what was acceptable were so very different. But it can also help to see how things were in the past so we have a better idea of where we need to go going forward!! 3y
KCofKaysville Just reading the poem Congo by Vachel Lindsay from early 1900's. If you want to see something way out of date ! 3y

Meh. Took me a lot longer to get through this because I kept getting pulled out of the story. The characterization of Rose was so jarring- definitely written by a man in the 1930s! I wish there was more description of the surroundings because there was so so much potential. Also, the ending was just.. huh? It wasn't awful, but I found myself not really caring about the plot or the characters

I love these questions @TheSpineView 😊.
#Two4Tuesday

1. I was named after Debbie Reynolds Tammy movies. I wished my name was Josephine from Little Women.

2. My daughter Chaya was named from a historical fiction about ancient Jerusalem. Her middle name came from two literary figures - Rose Wilder Lane and Rose from The African Queen.

@dwRavenPuff @Nute do you want to play?

TheSpineView Glad you liked the questions! Thanks for playing! 🤩 4y
cozypunk Rose Wilder Lane was such a character! 4y
kspenmoll Love your daughter names! 4y
Nute What a cool name for your daughter. So lovely when said together “Chaya Rose!” Thanks for the tag! I‘m on it! 4y

ModLib haul from Riverby Books today. I adore the cover for The African Queen. Hope it‘s not as racist as I fear it‘s going to be. The one without a DJ is A High Wind in Jamaica.

Pickpick

I loved the movie and decided to read the book. Well...I see why some things were changed for the screen. That said, even with the different ending, a few uses of the n-word, and the revelation of Allnut‘s marital status, it was an engaging read. If you like a happy ever after ending with no ambiguity then the movie is for you. Took me two days to whip through and it held my attention all the way through. Different from the movie, but still good.

After hearing great things about the movie, I've been wanting to read this before watching it and although I haven't seen it yet I do supsect that this may be a rare case in which the movie is better. The story had the potential to be good but really fell flat for me. This takes place on the Ulanga River in Tanzania and there were hardly any descriptions of the landscape, scenery or wildlife, ect. Also not a fan of the ending 😒

Suzze The same thing happened to me with The Bridge over the River Kwai. I had seen the movie a million years ago and loved it, but the books was blah. 5y

I don't get many Saturdays off so today is a treat to be home reading and drinking coffee! 😍 (decaf). Had to take a break from 1984. Has anyone read this one before?

Laura317 I‘ve not read the book, but the movie was great. 5y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook Last year I read a book related to this one - pretty sure you will find it interesting! 5y
HeathHof @Laura317 That's what I've heard! I can't wait to watch it once I'm done with the book. I wonder which will be better.🤔 5y

Billypar I didn't even realize it was a book- the movie is so good- one of my favorite Bogart performances. 6y
Austen_Nerd @Billypar I did not either, I just ordered it and Katherine Hepburn‘s book about the making of it. I was reading trivia about the movie as we were watching it. so, I saw the books. Now, I hope my books arrive quickly!!! 6y

Day 21 of #riotgrams - #coolspines! These might not be the fanciest spines, but I think they're the most interesting set in my library. Barnes and Noble Modern Classics, which had a short-lived run in the late 90s/early 00s. This set introduced me to John Fowles, Lillian Hellman, Eudora Welty, Evelyn Waugh, and Flannery O'Connor. 💗📚

mdemanatee Find it interesting that it's the Hellman memoir and not her plays. Drama student confession: I have not read the Children's Hour. But I did do preliminary dramaturgy for a production of Little Foxes. 7y
LeahBergen There are so many good ones in there! 7y
balletbookworm @mdemanatee I actually didn't know who Lillian Hellman was before I read this. It was very interesting 7y
