19 posts | 15 read | 2 to read
The fourth book in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series, which finds the amateur sleuths caught up in the whirlwind of the London Seasonand in a murderous scheme involving the family of Edmund and Fanny Bertram. Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney understand each other perfectly; it's a pity their families do not. A series of misunderstandings, misplaced pride, andindeedprejudice, has led their parents to deem the pair unsuited to wed. Now, with the Season approaching, Juliet has been sent to London with a new wardrobe and orders to prove herself worthy of someone better than the snobby Darcys. Meanwhile, Jonathan has been forced to accept an invitation to stay with old friends Edmund and Fanny Bertram at the house of Edmund's brother, Sir Thomas. Oblivious to and undesiring of female attention other than Juliet's, Jonathan is in danger of being ensnared by Caroline Bingley's plans to make herselfor her daughtermistress of Pemberley. But when the former husband of Edmund's sister Maria, Mr. Rushworth, is discovered dead, Jonathan and Juliet find themselves with problems far weightier than the marriage market. In one of the greatest scandals of its day, Maria abandoned her husband for the notorious rake Henry Crawford and, when he wouldn't marry her, was forced to flee to the continent in disgrace. Now Maria is back, with a daughter she claims Mr. Rushworth fathered after their divorceand who he wrote into his will just before his death. Now Jonathan and Juliet must unmask a killer before the drama surrounding the Rushworth family fortune claims another victim.

I think this is my favorite installment of this series so far! Mansfield Park isn't my favorite Austen so I was hesitant to spend more time with these characters but I thought their growth was well portrayed. And I was so happy to have Jonathan and Juliet back together! Their reunion was so sweet. The mystery was fun to follow but I'm here for the slow burn romance lol. By the end the stakes were high and I'm so ready for the next book!

I love this series! However, I didn't love this 4th addition as much, mainly because I don't like Mansfield Park that much. I find Fanny and the rest of the Mansfield characters a bit insufferable. However, I did like Fanny‘s ending and I gained a lot of respect for her after her brother confided something very personal to her. I found the ‘will they wont they‘ a bit overly dramatic and I didn‘t like the ending plot twists at all. Low pick.

I enjoyed this more than any since the first book. The romance is really heating up and there is *drama*! And the solutions of the mysteries are cleverly deduced.

I'm hoping the next book will have a HEA because I'm not sure my heart can take much more!

Fanny and Edmund are very happy that Sir Thomas is planning to sell his Antigua plantation, so the family will no longer bear the sin of being involved in the slave trade.

Another Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney mystery for my annual celebration of Austenian August. I love that with each addition to the series, Gray has more of her own characters/lore to weave in & refer to, as well as those of Austen‘s novels that are the foundation.

As this one featured so much from Mansfield Park, I worried I wouldn‘t care for it as much - that‘s my least favorite Austen by a large margin - but I should have had faith. A delight.

ravenlee I totally agree about the Mansfield Park part - I was on the fence, leaning toward dislike, but I was wrong. And happily so! 2mo

Jonathan sighed. He knew the rules of ettiquete as well as any (and better than most), but he could not see the sense of any rule that made it impolite to keep to one's own house and read one's own books.

Sace I agree with Johnathan. 3mo

This is fast becoming my favorite series. The developing relationship between Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy is nicely balanced with an intricate double murder mystery. I think the author remains very true to the spirit of the characters who appeared in the Austen originals as she continues to develop both them and her new characters.

I read this while on vacation, so one of my vacay pics.

actualdisneyprincess I love that series! I can‘t wait to get back to it once I get through my current library pile, which got out of control again. 🤣 3mo
Jane121 I just saw your post about your book, and it instantly caught my attention!

Am I ignoring my towering, teetering stack(s) of books at home to read this book that just came in to the library? Why, yes. Yes, I am, thank you for asking.

4/5

Miss Juliet Tilney and Mr. Jonathan Darcy find themselves both in Londonn. Jonathan wants to take advantage of the opportunity to convince everyone that he is an appropriate match for Juliet. But soon they are drawn into another murder investigation.

I continue to enjoy this series combining Austen's characters with cozy mystery. I continue to enjoy the way Jonathan and Juliet's relationship is developing over the series.

#Pemberlittens I had issues with how Jonathan's dad the ORIGINAL Mr Darcy was portrayed. Because of that I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads. My full slightly spoilery Review in comments. 🎩

#JaneAustenThenAndNow

Crinoline_Laphroaig I don't read these books for the mystery. I read them for Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy. Reasons for keeping them separated is very convoluted. Also I don't like that it's because of Mr Darcy! ⬇️

4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Mr Darcy who had such character growth in Pride and Prejudice and married for love. There's no reason a man who ended up with Lydia as a sister in law and Mrs Bennet as a mother in law would disapprove of Juliet Tilney as a daughter in law. She not a golddigger. Her family is respectable and while not Pemberly rich, they are not poor. Juliet is smart, likeable but most importantly she truly cares for Jonathan. Mr Darcy wouldn't act this way.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Will I continue to read this series? Absolutely! I'm waiting for the happy ever after. 4mo
willaful Hmmm, wondering now if I should skip this one and just wait for the HEA. ;-) They've been going downhill for me. 4mo

Rounded up to 5⭐️, this 4th book in series finds the Darcys, Tilneys and Bertrams knee-deep in family dramas/murders. Love this series!

#WeeklyFavorites

Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy are each sent to London by their parents to expand their social connections and if they find a match so much the better as long as it‘s not each other. Of course murder happens and they are again called into help the investigation. I‘m really enjoying this series and glad to know there willl be at least 2 more.

Thank you #NetGalley!
