If you get migraines you know how laughable it is to hear them described as headaches. As one poet put it, the migraine is a beast from Hell, a bone-crushing, brain-twisting, heart-rending, apocalyptic scourgean insult to all thats holy. And thats putting it mildly. People have been trying to tame the migraine beast for thousands of years. Some early healers bored holes into their patients skulls, the Greeks inhaled the smoke of burning coffee beans, while in ancient Egypt, doctors tied herb-stuffed clay crocodiles to migraine sufferers heads. Fortunately, we live in more enlightened times and there are now medically sound approaches that are relatively simple and inexpensiveand they dont leave scars or involve extreme fashion statements. Your complete guide to taking charge of your migraines and getting your life back, Migraines For Dummies offers a focused, fleshed-out program that works in the real world. This friendly guide fills you in on what you need to know to: Understand migraines and why you get them Relieve symptoms Pinpoint pain triggers Sort through the various medications Evaluate alternative remedies Make simple migraine-busting lifestyle changes Stop migraines from disrupting your family and work lives Find a good doctor to help you manage the beast The authors look at the whole spectrum of the problemfrom dealing with the number-one issue of pain relief, to handling the peripheral problems like absences from work skepticism from friends, and impact on family. They also explore a range of critical related issues, including: Different types of migraines, including abdominal, ocular, hemiplegic, opthamoplegic, and womens hormonal migraines Triggers, such as environmental allergens, stress, dietary triggers, and even exercises that can cause migraines Over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements Biofeedback, meditation, massage, acupuncture, and other alternative remedies The pros and cons of prescription remedies, including ergotamine derivatives, antidepressants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, botox and more Youve tried Aunt Ednas camphor-soaked head cloths. Now explore a sensible, medically sound approach, and get on the road to full-fledged pain relief with Migraines For Dummies.

Again no #fridayreads for me, I got such a nice pillow at work for my sofa today, but after a long and stressful day T work the migraine got me again. After it has been hot for so long and I had no problems, I got it, when I was twenty minutes at home. So instead of reading I am resting in bed and hope the pain won't last too long... #migraineisntareadingcompanion

A migraine sidelined my reading again today. I needed to take a five hour nap (I realize that's more of a small sleep than a nap) to avoid vomiting. But now that my sleep cycle is FUBAR, perhaps I'll get some reading in 💔

Foragingfantasy Oh no! So sorry. 7y

Desperation question - I've seen posts of other Littens who suffer from migraines. Mine are linked to my monthly cycle and range from moderate to severe. Anyone found relief that won't interfere with work (causing extreme sleepiness)? I'm trying to corral 30+ teens an hour while trying not to cry/barf while I can't speak clearly or think straight. I need help!

Notafraidofwords Oh no Hun, feel better. Usually, the only relief I get is if I sleep. 8y
becausetrains I wish I could help with the migraines - heating pads at the neck and lower back might help, and there are some pressure points that are supposed to help too. Mostly though, feel better ❤️ 8y
Cinfhen So sorry, I know that feeling! I take medication but sometimes an Excedrin Migraine will help. Unfortunately, mostly dark, quiet environments work best, which doesn't seem like an option for you ☹️ 8y
See All 12 Comments
Zelma I don't have migraines but I know some people do acupuncture and it really helps. 8y
LauraJ Second on the Excedrin Migraine. My migraines are hormonal too and this takes enough of an edge off the pain that I don't vomit on my coworkers. It's a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine, so coffee and Tylenol may help in a pinch. 8y
prowlix (I'm a pharmacist) If your migraines are associated with your cycle, have you looked into using one of the extended 3 month birth control options? That wouldn't be an immediate fix but could help decrease how often you get them but that may be too personal of a question. Generally, caffeine and ibuprofen (or other NSAIDs) are first line for breaking migraines. Hope you feel better! 8y
Leelee.reads @prowlix Birth control is what the doctors keep recommending, but every time I've tried, I've had terrible nausea. :/ I'm going to keep trying options until I find something that works though! 8y
Leelee.reads @Notafraidofwords thank you for the kind words. ❤️ @becausetrains @Zelma I haven't tried acupuncture but that is where I think I'll be headed! @LauraJ @prowlix Excedrine Migraine works about half the time and the other half I'm up crap creek without a proverbial paddle. Thanks for the feedback though! Migraine sufferers (and pharmacists) unite! 8y
becausetrains @Leelee.reads @Zelma good luck! If it works let us know - some of my female friends have the same monthly migraines (both at the end and the middle of their cycles) and they've been looking for relief for a while. 8y
Notafraidofwords @prowlix birth control does help a ton. There are various forms where a pill is not necessarily involved. They have helped me a ton. 8y
prowlix @Notafraidofwords I think finding the right birth control is so important! There are so many options and you kinda have to ask questions. It's just a little hard to go into all the pros/cons in 451 characters 😉 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage So sorry. My migraines got worse around the time of peri menopause so I think there's been a hormonal cause. But the main cause for me is something altogether different. Here's the book I found most helpful when the changes started. #litsymigrainebookclub 7y

No reading today, but I am going to buy this book for my dear, sweet husband. He brought me soup & has been pampering me. Then, out of nowhere offers me a cheddar & sour cream potato chip...! 😝 Migraine sufferers will know this can send your stomach over the deep end. Horrible in the moment but funny now.

BookishFeminist 😳😳🙅🏻 Yep, no thanks! That would make me super nauseated during a migraine. May be a good idea to get your husband that book. 😜 I'm sorry you've got one today. They're the worst. Sending love & hope you feel better soon! 🤕💞 8y
LauraBeth Hope you feel better 😀 8y
