Carlos Delacruz is one of the New York Council of the Deads most unusual agentsan inbetweener, partially resurrected from a death he barely recalls suffering, after a life thats missing from his memory. He thinks he is one of a kinduntil he encounters other entities walking the fine line between life and death. One inbetweener is a sorcerer. Hes summoned a horde of implike ngks capable of eliminating spirits, and theyre spreading through the city like a plague. Theyve already taken out some of NYCODs finest, leaving Carlos desperate to stop their master before he opens up the entrada to the Underworldwhich would destroy the balance between the living and the dead. I got in about 8 hours of reading today! 5 hours of it was audiobook listening while I got a bunch of stuff done! Then I figured I‘d done enough so it was okay for me to sit down with a book!

This book is definitely getting me in the Halloween spirit! Ghosts, Underworld, Council of the Dead 💀

Now the hubbies back, so its dinner and socializing the rest of the night.

A fun supernatural romp. Like his YA novel, Shadowshaper, this book nearly every character is a person of color. Recommended

It‘s really frustrating when I order a book from ThriftBooks and they send me an ARC.

Like I paid for a book, not an ARC... this is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened to me.

(I don‘t care if it‘s a special comic-con version)

MidnightBookGirl Yeah, selling arcs is definitely sucky, but selling it to a buyer who doesn't know that it's an arc is especially egregious. 2y

When you pay for an hour‘s parking in the city, and it only takes ten minutes to renew your license, that means you get the other 50 minutes at the library, right? Right?

And I was trying to read down my library stack, too. Ugh 😑

I remember receiving the first book in this series in a quarterly box from @bookriot and I'd never heard of DJO before. When I picked it up months later to read, I was totally hooked. Plus, Reza is such a badass character. My print copies are in storage so here are my digital ones.

TsundokuAleax I have them on my shelves and just keep trying to get through the box of books that will be leaving once read. He is hilarious in person. I got to see him at a panel and fell in love with all the authors there. 2y

This has been on my #mounttbr for I don't know how long. And I've actually read about half of it. I recently read his teen book and wasn't a fan of it, so this might be hard to get back into. Should I keep going?

ghosthost That‘s reasonable. I set it aside because I wasn‘t in the mood for yet another book with a sexist and judgmental jerk as a main character. I‘m looking for likable right now. 2y

Really enjoyed this book! Interesting & unique story that had me hooked from the first page. It's obvious Older has a love for New York, it shines throughout the book. So glad I purchased the other two in the series I can't wait to get started on the second. Plan on diving in on my lunch break 🤓

This was a quick, fun read. I love how Older's book is set in the real world and enriched with the paranormal, just as Shadowshaper was. When I read this, I could feel and hear NYC. I know I'm not going to wait too long before I pick up the next book. I want to find out more about Carlos and hang out with Riley and Mama Esther too. #LRC21 #ontbrover1year #readinmarch

Just finished this one today; it took me longer than I expected. Interesting world building and I suspect now that the world is established the next one will be even better. This is the first year I've really embraced buying ebooks regularly and I am loving reading more on my Nook.

I enjoyed the descriptions of Brooklyn although it took me awhile to get into the book's plot. It seemed like there was more world-building than plot/story in this one, but it's definitely refreshing to have diverse voices in the genre. I'd like to see more development of minor characters. Looks like the next book may do so.

This was a fun supernatural noir detective novel. The perfect mix of my favorites. It had the back drop of New York, which is also something I love. Real backdrop with fictional pieces added in. I will be reading the second in the series!

Parts of this were interesting, and I liked the voice of several of the characters. It's an interesting premise: an undead detective/hunter of rogue supernatural beings gets caught up in a plot to merge the living and the dead. The main character, Carlos, must decide what side he stands on. However, in the end, I just didn't care enough about the outcome. I'm not sure if it was just me, or if I wasn't in the right mood...but I just didn't love it.

I think the #BestSidekick goes to Riley. He's Carlos' (pictured above) partner in keeping the ghosts/spirits of NYC in check. He's a ghost ("all soul" as Carlos puts it), a bit of a horn dog at times and absolutely someone you'd want to back you up when shit goes down (especially against those nasty little ngks).

Hard boiled, morbidly funny, and pretty damn thrilling. A vibrant portrait of a diverse Brooklyn and its many mystical inhabitants. A book that is part detective story, part urban fantasy. It imagines an alternate, mythic realm of NYC, a place of phantasms, rituals, and rich cultural traditions. #fantasyorscifi

Have you guys read this series? Older writes absolutely amazing fantasy fiction. His portrayal of Brooklyn is pretty much spot on, and he writes some badass women. If you haven't read these yet, stop everything else you're doing and just grab them. Book three comes out in January! #diverserecs

Happy #TBRTuesday ! These are recent additions to my TBR pile....just got them on Sunday. Anyone else have a TBR that only ever gets larger instead of smaller?

SusanInTiburon I never heard of one getting smaller! 3y
LauraReadsTheBooks @Susanintiburon good because I think there is this crazy rumor out there that we are supposed to read through them, and thus make the pile smaller. One step forward, two steps back 😎 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Mine never gets smaller, each one I read adds at least 3 more. More in that series, by that author, in the genre... More about that subject, other books or authors mentioned in the book I'm reading. 📚📚📚 3y
MadisonBeReading Basically my home library is one giant TBR. I have a new plan to tackle it shelf by shelf that I plan to execute after I finish my current read. 3y
