Speak: A Novel | Louisa Hall

Pickpick

This novel felt to me like a nautilus. It starts as a tightly wound spiral and moves gradually outward, circling around itself in ever widening spirals. As a reader we move forward and around the previous part.
Ideas on speech and language, as well as how to capture and preserve a voice are the central themes. We consider programming, the ethics of AI, the nature of memory. All BIG ideas that Hall effortlessly weaves across five parts.

I spent an hour with this gem this morning. "It was strange, learning the contours of another's loneliness. You could never know it all at once; like stepping inside a dark cave, you felt along the walls, bumped into jagged edges."

Gorgeous writing, but this one didn't hit me like Brown Girl Dreaming. Still, so glad she's a finalist for the National Book Award!
