Queen of Thieves
Queen of Thieves: A Novel | Beezy Marsh
16 posts | 11 read | 11 to read
An electrifying historical adventure about a ring of bold and resourceful women thieves in post-World War II London. Gangland was a mans world. Or so they thought. The women knew different. London, 1946. The city struggles to rebuild itself after the devastation of the Blitz. Food is rationed, good jobs are scarce, and even the most honest families are forced to take a bit of crooked just to survive. Alice Diamond, the Queen of Thieves, rules over her all-female gang with a bejeweled fist. Her hoisters are expert shoplifters, the scourge of Londons upscale boutiques and departments stores. Their lucrative business stealing and fencing luxury goods always carries the threat of violence; Alice packs a razor, and has been known to use her heavy rows of diamond rings like brass knuckles. Young Nell is a teenager from the slums, hiding a secret pregnancy and facing a desperately uncertain future when Alice takes her under her wing. Before long, Nell is experiencing all the dangersand glamourous trappingsthat comes with this underworld existence. Alice wants Nell to be a useful weapon in her ongoing war against crime boss Billy Sullivans gang of rival thieves. But Nell has a hidden agenda of her own, and is not to be underestimated. The more she is manipulated by both Alice and Billy, the more her hunger for revenge grows. As Nell embraces the rich spoils of crime and the seedy underbelly of London, will she manage to carve out her own path to power and riches? Might she even crown herself the Queen of Thieves?

I loved this book. Reading first person as a thief in alternating ladies of different generations was thrilling. My heart raced as they shoved nylons down their bloomers to resale for cheaper when ration coupons wouldn't cover them after the war. When thieving or selling yourself is the only way to eat, you do what you have to. Who to trust, who not to trust... I just enjoyed all of it.

I ended up doing a decent amount of skimming in the last quarter of the book. It was pretty obvious all along where the story was going, and the alternating voices between Nell and Alice were getting annoying. I found the whole thing very meh. One more down in my quest to #readmyshelves.

Okay ladies,
These are my top picks from my TBR list plus the tagged book, Queen of Thieves, which I am too lazy to go get out of my car for the pic.
Any thoughts?

I don‘t think I actually liked this book. I thought it was just okay. I probably wouldn‘t have finished it if it wasn‘t on audio.

Basically Nell joins a gang, goes to jail and wants to get her revenge. Set right after WWII.

Aims42 I got halfway through it and then skipped to the epilogue 😇 Into the Goodwill box it went after that. 13mo

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. I will provide no description and no reason for wanting to read it. I just do. Some will be old, and some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

This was a quick read. I liked reading from the two different characters' perspectives.
The slang was really well done too.

Unfortunately #BOTM is off to a rough start for me! I just didn‘t care for this one- unlikable characters, a slow beginning that relies on a lot of “telling” and passive verbs (not to mention verb tense switches!) and a main character who devolves rather than grows. There‘s a lot of slang (not all of it period appropriate) but maybe these flaws are easier overlooked in an audio format? Disappointing and predictable- just not for me at all!

I got 50% in and couldn‘t connect to the characters to really care how it finished 🤷🏼‍♀️ Worth giving it a try though, I have never heard of the all girl gang Forty Thieves and am so intrigued to find out more. This just wasn‘t the book for me

#BOTM
I am usually a romance novel reader when not reading graphic novels or kids books, but choose to step out of my comfort zone this month
It's also me, and may be months before I actually read this one

I finally got around to choosing my #BOTM. This was the most interesting to me. I hope it is as good as it sounds.

As anyone else read this one yet?

PrezBookster This was my BOTM pick as well! Half way done, and it‘s ok, not amazing. 1y
TheSpineView @PrezBookster I haven't started this book yet. Good to know it is good. 1y

Whelp. I paused my #botm account for a total of three weeks (😂) and resumed when I saw this month‘s book choices. Then, I went and treated myself with two add-ons. Obviously, “shelf control” is not a current strength of mine. I justified it to myself because this week I finished three 400+ TBF books on my shelf. Whatever we need to do to rationalize all the book buying, right? 💸 🤷‍♀️ 📚

marleed Well, someone has to support the book publishing industry. So take pride in that! 1y
Bklover I am very very bad at shelf control. 😉 1y
BookBosomed1 @marleed Yes! I‘ll keep telling myself this and patting myself on the back. 1y

January #BOTM picks are up!

I may start the year off with a skip and go the library route. I don't know why I get a little antsy about going straight to "buy" with a debut, I learned a long time ago that their thrillers are hit or miss for me, and the Hell Bent cover really creeps me out ?

Laughterhp Hell Bent is a sequel! So you‘ll probably have want to read the 1st one first! But yes, the cover is super creepy. 1y
swishandflick @Laughterhp Yep, I know! I already own Ninth House but haven't gotten around to it yet 😬 1y
Laughterhp Oh it‘s so good!! I can‘t wait for this sequel!! 1y
Breanne1 All this time I thought I had Ninth House in my TBR pile and I can‘t find it anywhere. Is this a sign I have a problem? 😂🤣 1y
