From the co-host of chart-topping true crime podcast Morbid, a thrilling debut novel told from the dueling perspectives of a notorious serial killer and the medical examiner following where his trail of victims leadsSomething dark is lurking in the Louisiana bayou: a methodical killer with a penchant for medical experimentation is hard at work completing his most harrowing crime yet, taunting the authorities who desperately try to catch up.But forensic pathologist Dr. Wren Muller is the best there is. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of historical crimes, and years of experience working in the Medical Examiner's office, she's never encountered a case she couldn't solve. Until now. Case after case is piling up on Wren's examination table, and soon she is sucked into an all-consuming cat-and-mouse chase with a brutal murderer getting more brazen by the day.An addictive read with straight-from-the-morgue details only an autopsy technician could provide, The Butcher and the Wren promises to ensnare all who enter.

I feel as though I only read half the book. Where is the character building and a good ending? There was some I liked about this book, but was more I didn't. One dimensional characters, I felt like there was a lot of the story missing. 2.5/5

Genuinely the worst book I've ever read. I was so looking forward to reading this one and it was a huge let down. Just awful awful writing. Packed full of cliches, bad alliterations and shoddy wooden dialogue. Avoid at all costs.

#bookspin for Jan! I‘m really sad as I reeeally wanted this to be good as I love morbid podcast, but it was decidedly lacklustre. And don‘t even get me started on the RIDICULOUS ending 🤦🏻‍♀️

An interesting read with a game of cat and mouse. I felt that the story was rushed at times and would‘ve liked more background about the characters. #Scarathlon #TeamMonsterMash #LittenListen #31by31 #pointsathon #spookoween +206 pts

Great concept, and a couple of good twists, but it‘s just missing so much, and the ending.. 😳 I need the rest!

So I never heard the author's podcast. Will definitely look into it now. I realized this is the authors very first book and she did an amazing job at it. Yes there is some areas she needs to improve that's very true but the story was captivating, great paced and entrataining. I enjoyed it and I would read more of her work.

Now I wonder if maybe they will be a second part to this🤔

⭐️⭐️⭐️
It was ok, I suppose, but nothing I won't forget in a few days. The MC was supremely boring. The antagonist a little less so, but he wasn't fleshed out as well as he could have been. I'd seen lots of hype for this book, but I'm wondering if it had more to do with the author's podcast fame than the content of the book. Audio was decent.

Traci1 This was my first finish for #20in4, so yay for that. For #scarathlon, my point total was 536 (includes 4 hours, 6 thons and a #promptmaze, and 26 words found). #teamslaughter @Clwojick #spookaween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks #littenlisten @aperfectmjk @Andrew65 1y

This was a quick read and pretty good, but I found the twist confusing and the ending very rushed and boring. It had the framework to be excellent, but unfortunately failed to deliver a solid ending. Did anyone else not totally comprehend the "twist" with the bracelet? How things in the past are also in the present? Fav quote: "sometimes death is the only real mercy."

Liking this one so far! Smart serial killer meets smart, forensically-experienced detective.

This was a difficult book to rate. On one hand, I thought the plot was good, it was fast-paced, & the chapters from the point of view of the killer were very chilling, however, the main character doesn't seem to have a personality. They were a complete blank - in fact I couldn't tell you much about any of the 'good guys'. Is it ironic that the character with the most depth was the killer?

(Continued in comments)

OutsmartYourShelf It's an okay read, but there were several issues including the above. The ending seemed over & done with far too quickly, although it could be that there's a second book or even a series. Also just one more little thing - the overuse of the word 'smirk'. A smirking smile is a particular thing & the use of it in the wrong context is jarring. 3⭐

Ok so this new Aardvark subscription has me more and more intrigued. So far they've posted these two clues for their first box. Any guesses?

I think the top clue could be the tagged book? And the second could be The Night Ship? Maybe?? But I stink at emoji-based clues so I'm curious what y'all think 🕵️🏽‍♀️

#aardvark (fun fact - their website says the name is because it's the first word in the dictionary 😂)

KT1432 I definitely think one is The Night Ship! This one seems to be the only one that fits the second clue. I‘m excited to see what they have to offer! I may close my second BOTM account lol. 2y
