Love on the Brain
Love on the Brain | Ali Hazelwood
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new STEMinist rom-com in which a scientist is forced to work on a project with her nemesis--with explosive results. Like an avenging, purple-haired Jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, Bee Knigswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project--a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia--Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward. Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. And sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school--archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away. Now, her equipment is missing, the staff is ignoring her, and Bee finds her floundering career in somewhat of a pickle. Perhaps it's her occipital cortex playing tricks on her, but Bee could swear she can see Levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas...devouring her with those eyes. And the possibilities have all her neurons firing. But when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there's only one question that matters: What will Bee Knigswasser do?

I loved The Love Hypothesis, but this was horrible. The characters were so annoying and the plot was absolutely ridiculous. Bee is supposedly the best neurosciencist in her field, but somehow no one wants to work with her and her university is threatening to fire/replace her? And Levi is working on innovative projects at NASA, but can't be in the same room as a girl he thinks is cute? Don't even get me started on the sabotage at NASA. Ridiculous!

With every work of this author I‘m reminded there are certain things you can‘t “unnotice”, like her size difference fetish 🙈 It gives all the smut across her books a same-ish feel (no matter how she tries to vary it), but otherwise, the story was engaging, and the writing style was fun. Then the MC—who started likable—devolved into a bit of an asshole, which lowered my enjoyment 😞 Plus, I knew who the villain was the moment they walked in 😕 3/5

#novelnovember #readathon after a short break from Litsy (ok, a long one - 4 years) I decided to see what‘s up again. A great day to come back as I see this fun short readathon happening! I don‘t have a plan per se because I read what I feel like reading so never plan ahead. I started this one today. It‘s my second by her. I‘ve already figured out what I‘m sure is supposed to a big surprise so we‘ll see if the ride is enjoyable.

Ali Hazelwood has definitely found a formula that works! I love that her characters are smart, quirky, and interesting. Witty banter and steamy chemistry is my kryptonite when it comes to rom-coms, and Hazlewood has cracked that code. I just don't think I'd be able to read too many of her books back-to-back given the similarities. But the same can be said for lots of my favorite romance authors, so that's not necessarily a bad thing! 👩🏼‍🔬 4.5⭐️

Alright here we go. Had I not already read The Love Hypothesis and the novellas Ali Hazelwood put out before this book was published, this could of easily been a pick for me. And I loved TLH 😍 Love on the Brain could have been so much better but it seems like Hazelwood has figured out her template and is sticking pretty firmly to replicating it down to her characters‘ body types ffs 😒 ⬇️

MatchlessMarie I really hope that she tries to change things up with whatever she writes next because I really do enjoy her humor/STEM perspective. TheAromaofBooks I've seen this complaint about this book in a lot of reviews... I saw someone on IG said it was like she plagiarized her own book 😂 I enjoyed The Love Hypothesis, but it was a little spicy for me so I probably will give this one a pass anyway. 2mo
TheSpineView Good job 2mo
Kimberlone 100% agree, especially after also reading her novellas, I unfortunately think that Hazelwood is a one trick pony. If it turns out her next full length novel actually has something new to bring to the table I might check it out, but if it‘s more of the same I will def be passing. It‘s all too bad because I did think TLH had a unique premise in the romance world… 2mo
MatchlessMarie @TheAromaofBooks Oh man that is a great analogy lol 2mo
MatchlessMarie @Kimberlone I was kind of bummed because something I really liked about TLH is that it gave a platform to discuss a demisexuality/the Ace spectrum when representation is hard to come by. 2mo

SEPTEMBER WRAP UP❣️

This was a really busy month, making it difficult to squeeze books in. I finished 30 books but TEN were Doctor Who Big Finish Adventures.

Last month was an epic fail for anything requiring concentration. Books 😢

I did get the first leg (6 books) of the 4 path Indie Accords readathon completed!! 🎉

It wasn‘t a stellar reading month for me … but here are 9 solid 4 to 4.75 ⭐️ books from the 30. 🤗 ♥️

3.25 stars, I've loved everything else I've read by her, but this was just not that good. It had me cringing in parts and not for the usual romance reasons. It didn't have enough depth into certain issues, and others were just trite and WAY too cliche. It was still hilarious at parts and mostly enjoyable. Also, I think she just tried to do too much with this one book.

🎧📚 from the author of The Love Hypothesis another women in STEM romance. I loved it! Near 5 star!

The smart woman being so relationship dumb … grated on me by the end but I understood & forgave.

If you enjoyed The Love Hypothesis you‘re sure to love this book!

To summarize … students get labeled enemies in college … years later the miscommunication becomes glaringly evident.

FUN read, great narration! Recommend Hardcover #BOTM

Cute and fluffy, but also a bit spicy towards the end, this was another great book from Ali Hazelwood. I preferred this one over The Love Hypothesis only because the MC Bee specialised in neuroscience, which is more similar to what I study (psychology). I loved the enemies to lovers vibe, but it was short lived as Levi made things clear early on in the book. I loved the science and even learnt a few things, I loved the quirkiness and happy ending!

Even though I liked The Love Hypothesis better I did enjoy this. My biggest complaint is that all her MCs are "tiny," and their love interests are all "huge/bulky." Fat girls/all body types deserve representation too ?‍♀️, they're definitely out there getting laid even though books/movies/tv/social media implies otherwise

Ali Hazelwood is growing into an auto read author for me. Her characters are whip smart and even the sub-characters are loveable, moody, and memorable. I love that Bee's constant moving in her childhood so easily confused her that when she'd get a brilliant idea she'd scribble notes in the wrong language for her current location. Her emotional reaction to roadkill just makes that seem genuine. I thought this one would...

MaggieCarr ... throw the curve into a conflict but instead the conflict through another character brings the storyline into the conclusion and I assumed wrong, loving the way it was tied up. 3mo

Let me preface this with the fact that I really liked Love Hypothesis. This book has almost the same plot and even characters as all of her other books. I‘m DNFing due to this. I will try her again when I hear there is more variation in characters. Every story has manic pixie tiny scientist and giant broody grumpy semi-bully misunderstood hero. No need to read as I have read it already! Ugh.

After hating Ready Player One, I read this all in one sitting! The Love Hypothesis had me in a chokehold with how obsessed I was, so I was eager to read another book by Hazelwood. There are a LOT of similarities between the two books, but it actually didn‘t bother me because it‘s my type I guess? Enemies to lovers is such a fun trope for me, and this one works. I loved how the sexual tension between Bee and Levi is brought to a boil. Hazelwood delivers THREE spicy scenes that are red hot! The banter between Levi and Bee is witty. sharp, and laugh out loud funny. The supporting cast makes for fun reading as well. It is an overall fun, smart read that will have you swooning til the last page.

All by itself this was a quick fun HEA read. I can‘t help but compare it to The Love Hypotheses because the two are so similar. Hazelwood‘s women in STEM background is a hoot but I hope her future efforts are written with a romance trope different than bad assumptions and miscommunication because I just want more common sense from these women.
