The Inseparables
The Inseparables: A Novel | Stuart Nadler
A keenly observed multi-generational novel about sex, marriage, shame, money, divorce, guilt, bad therapists, French food, death, and one old rooster, by the acclaimed author of Wise Men.Henrietta Olyphant has lost her husband, her money, and is about to lose her hard-won anonymity: The Inseparables, the scandalous and critically despised best-seller that Henrietta wrote decades earlier, is set to be reissued. At the same time, her daughter Oona is in the middle of a divorce, and has begun an affair with her therapist. And Oona's teenaged daughter Lydia faces scrutiny and shame when a nude photo unintentionally circulates around her boarding school. In the wake of these upheavals, the women come together unexpectedly to sift through the mess. Told over the course of a few days, this incisive and moving novel examines what happens when our most careful ideas about ourselves unravel and we must invent ourselves--and our family--anew.

Three generations of women are the focus of this book -one recently widowed, her daughter dealing with her separation from her husband, and her granddaughter suspended from school after a topless photo of her is circulated. This book started strong and got steadily weaker as it progressed. Still there were such great moments that I had to see how it ended. I can‘t rate it as a pick but I am not sorry that I read it.

generations of a family deal with turning points and crises that change how they operate in the world. with the admissions, the topic of the turning point for each family member was ambition. with the wangs vs the world, it is money and failed dreams. with this book, it is sex. however nadler keeps a light touch, reminiscent of Sloane Crosley in The Clasp.

A brilliant premise – sexuality and connection in three generations of strong women; a disappointingly mediocre novel. I questioned almost every decision he made re structure, point of view, and what to focus on. That said, the ending was somewhat emotionally satisfying. Had he sat with & fermented this rich material, put it through several more drafts, it could've been unforgettable; as it is, I have to remove the prefix from that last adjective.

Bailedbailed

You know it's time to bail when you start thinking "I just want to get this over with." This book does not have a strong story structure. It's more about the characters, but even there we only get a superficial view of them. The book attempted to explore women and sex unsuccessfully. Finally, while the book dealt with three generations of women from the same family, the three of them where hardly ever in the same scene. Just didn't do it for me.

Well-ReadNeck I bailed on this one, too. 8y

4🌟 A grandmother, who published a smutty book in the 70s, and a granddaughter, who had nude pictures stolen now, both want a do over. The mother between them is dealing with her martial separation. The book deals with sexual and emotional boundaries without too much drama. The writing is solid, the characters are likable, and there are genuine funny and touching moments. Overall, good not great. #quote is the separated parents talking

Dropping truth bombs:
1. Oona is 40; her daughter, Lydia, is 15. That means L was born while O was in medical school. Really tough (trust me) but possible.
2. Husband Spencer quit his job as a lawyer when L was 1. O may have been starting her residency.
3. They built a nice four bedroom house in the suburbs of Boston that year.
So, given that the average first year surgical resident's salary is $52k, how did they afford all this???

Megabooks Also, since Oona is an orthopedic surgeon, she was a resident (with mild salary increases) for something like 7-8 years before she started making the "big bucks". This is just all adding up to some poor research. 8y
Hooked_on_books Plus student loan debt, which most folks have. And my first year residency salary was only $40K. Build a house? No way. 8y
Megabooks @Hooked__on__books Yes! I was going to mention debt, but the book doesn't specify. It is likely that she had debt as well! 8y

Bloggers: Have any of you taken a break from blogging, and if so, how has it affected your readership? My dental situation continues to worsen ☹️🤕, and I'm currently three books behind writing posts. The medicines I'm on for pain/spasming make it difficult to think clearly, so writing doesn't sound fun. Thoughts? I'm leaning towards a hiatus.

Angelala007 Not a blogger, but what about having guest posters? 8y
ReadingEnvy How often do you post to your blog right now? If it's more than weekly could you pull back to weekly temporarily? 8y
BookishFeminist Aw I'm sorry. I am brand new to blogging, but perhaps instead of a hiatus you could just put up a personal disclaimer & say you have a lot going on at the moment but that you'll continue to post, just not as frequently. Cutting back on the number of posts rather than forcing yourself to review every book & follow a strict schedule might make it feel enjoyable for you w/o feeling like you're slacking or risking readership. 8y

bookishkai In my experience, when bloggers explain what's going on in their lives that makes posting difficult, readers are pretty understanding. 8y
LauraBrook I agree w what Kris said above. I've had a blog for years and don't necessarily count on retaining readers, so I'm no help in that regard. But honestly, posting a brief note about what's going on and not worrying about it until you feel better is A-OK. 8y
Trav I started blogging for a few months, but ended up deleting my website. Considering the amount of books I read I would have been reviewing pretty much all the time, and when I wasn't updating my blog regularly I felt this pressure that was constantly lingering in the background. Granted it was self imposed, but it took away a great chunk of my social life and quality time with people who matter to me, and I didn't want that. It made my miserable. 8y
Sue I've just started my blogging journey too. I'm sure your loyal readership won't go anywhere, especially if you tell them what's happening. Do what you need to to get yourself well xx 8y
BookishFeminist For what it's worth, most bloggers I know make a point to mention they do not review every book they read, so I hope you don't feel the pressure to do that! Sometimes I just don't feel like reviewing something, even on goodreads & even if I enjoyed it, and that's perfectly fine. 8y
Megabooks @Angelala007 I don't know enough people who would be willing to take over. @ReadingEnvy Right now, I'm posting 4 times a week. Weekly might be possible. Maybe the best book I read that week or rather than 500-600 word reviews, more like 200 words. @bookishkris @laurabrook That's an idea. I think that may be what I go with until the worst is over. I may get splints next week, which should help. 8y
ApoptyGina69 I read Wil Wheaton's blog regularly and he told us at the beginning of the year he would have to post infrequently for a while to get projects done and personal matters handled. He's back to once a week or less these days, but I'll always read him. He occasionally uses guest bloggers too. Take care of yourself first! 🙂 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I have a blog and am currently on a hiatus. You can use the link on my profile to see what I've done if you like. Some good suggestions here. I've found that if you share a bit, readers are very understanding 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 Oh and good luck with your dental health. 8y
Megabooks @trav I generally enjoy it. I'm just having a rough go. @sue I hope that's true. I do plan to provide some kind of explanation. @BookishFeminist I review most books I read. The so-sos usually not. I generally feel I don't have much to say about them, but if it's good or bad, I write something. @ApoptyGina69 Well, I'm not as famous as Wil 😉, but I do think I owe my readers some sort of explanation. 8y
Megabooks Thank you @kaysreadinglife I'll definitely check that out!! 8y
Megabooks Yes, @kaysreadinglife I like what you've said. I don't want to go into too much detail. My family and friends know I have chronic health problems and that this has been wrought year. I don't feel I owe my non-close readership a huge explanation. 8y
Megabooks I'm glad I have Litsy to share my thoughts in a more brief way! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Take care of yourself first. If you do, you'll hopefully be back to regular life and blogging sooner. I have a couple of blogs and haven't been able to write since October. I posted in November with an explanation. I'm actually starting to contemplate going back. ❤️ 8y
shawnmooney I love @angelala 's idea and I bet there would be enough Litsytes eager to contribute that you could at least get a guest review up once a week! (I'd be happy to help out...) 8y
LitHousewife I'm pretty much consistently on a break these days. My readership over the past year has dropped by 200 over the course of the last year. I don't think that taking a small break is going to hurt too badly. People come back, too. I promise. 8y
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, I think I'm deciding that's more important. @shawnmooney Thank you thank you! I'll definitely consider that. I have posts through some of next week. Right now it's between stopping with the possibility of guests or once weekly 200 word reviews of the best book I read that week. I hope this problem will only last a couple of weeks - maybe a month tops. 8y
Megabooks @LitHousewife Thank you for the support! It's good to hear from other bloggers who take breaks. It makes me feel a lot more secure. 😃👍🏻 8y
Megabooks Since I'm continuing with @Litsy , I'm thinking of just posting my short Litsy reviews once weekly because I'm going to be writing them already. 8y
NovelGirl82 I have, and it wasn't too bad. I just gave a short explanation as to the situation. My blog isn't huge, or anything, but I didn't lose any followers. If you wanted to go the guest blogger route, I'm sure you could find contributors, even through Litsy. I would certainly be willing to help out. 8y
NovelGirl82 I hope all goes well with your medical issues. I definitely understand that. That was my reason for taking a break, as well. 8y
Trav As long as you enjoy it! I'm sorry to hear you're having a rough time of it. I think @kaysreadinglife suggestion is a fantastic idea. Once you're on the mend and feeling better then you can always go back to it. In the meantime, take care of yourself and I hope you start feeling better soon. 8y
Megabooks @NovelGirl82 Thank you for volunteering! Medical problems suck. I hope everything has cleared up for you. @track Thank you!! 😃 8y

A compelling story of three generations of women, set in the aftermath of the loss of the grandmother's husband, the mother's separation, and the daughter's (completely unjust) suspension from boarding school. There are infuriating parts, and hilarious parts, and tear-worthy parts, so basically this has everything. The audiobook is read by three female narrators to go along with the alternating perspectives, which made it easy to follow. 4.5/5⭐️
