Defy the Night
Defy the Night | Brigid Kemmerer
From New York Times bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer comes a blockbuster fantasy series about a kingdom divided by corruption, the prince desperately holding it together, and the girl who will risk everything to bring it crashing down. The kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of disaster. Rifts between sectors have only worsened since a sickness began ravaging the land, and within the Royal Palace, the king holds a tenuous peace with a ruthless hand. King Harristan was thrust into power after his parents' shocking assassination, leaving the younger Prince Corrick to take on the brutal role of the King's Justice. The brothers have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion--it's the only way to maintain order when the sickness can strike anywhere, and the only known cure, an elixir made from delicate Moonflower petals, is severely limited. Out in the Wilds, apothecary apprentice Tessa Cade is tired of seeing her neighbors die, their suffering ignored by the unyielding royals. Every night, she and her best friend Wes risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals and distribute the elixir to those who need it most--but it's still not enough. As rumors spread that the cure no longer works and sparks of rebellion begin to flare, a particularly cruel act from the King's Justice makes Tessa desperate enough to try the impossible: sneaking into the palace. But what she finds upon her arrival makes her wonder if it's even possible to fix Kandala without destroying it first. Set in a richly imaginative world with striking similarities to our own, Brigid Kemmerer's captivating new series is about those with power and those without . . . and what happens when someone is brave enough to imagine a new future.

I loved the characters: Tessa and Corrick had sad pasts - it was really easy to understand their actions and it was interesting to see things from both sides.

This was really political book: It's always interesting to see who is betraying who and what are someone's motives. It was a bit too clear who are good and bad ones. The one plot twist at the beginning was also too easy to guess.

Really solid book overall, pleasurable & enjoyable to read.

Rereading this before I read the sequel. Sometimes I wish there was a site I could use to read a quick recap.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever seen a more abrupt cliffhanger in my life. That being said, you had me at Robin Hood retelling with a twist.

I love how Brigid always challenges assumptions commoners make of the royals and vice versa and while including political intrigue also looks at ways the rulers have failed and how they can do better, especially in areas of poverty levels.

Really on a reading streak. Wow. Finished Legendary. I think I like it more than caraval 5⭐️. Also finished One Of Us is Lying and We Were Liars. Didn‘t like these books as much as I thought I would I could see the plot twists from a mile away. Both probably level out at 2⭐️. Starting Defy the Night. Let‘s take a second to appreciate the cover. I am in love🥰

After disliking the first Cursebreaker book I never continued on with the series. I am so happy I gave this book a chance. I absolutely loved it! A spin on Robin Hood and Zorro tales with a fantastic storyline that I never wanted to put down. I loved the characters and I love how the author compared the politics of running a kingdom. I can't wait for the next book!

I love Brigid Kemmerer. I do. And I didn‘t think this book was unenjoyable. But it also wasn‘t an exciting read for me. I found more than one component easy to predict and I didn‘t feel especially invested in any of the characters. The path was too familiar and the tone of the characters felt so much like the characters from The Cursebreakers series.

ShelleyBooksie I'm glad to read your review as I was wondering about this one. 1y

I just finished. It was pretty good. I needed a good fantasy since I‘ve been reading a lot of contemporary lately.

What do you do when Chaos is nipping at your kingdom's heels? When the air is rife with political intrigue, insurrection, betrayl & quite possibly, an all out assault on the crown? Who's in the right? Are reparations due? This book shows that those answers aren't always cut & dry. It was great at showing every POV. We got to see the woes & drama of ruling a sick & desperate country. This book is filled with tropey clichés yet I highly recommend it

I manage to squeeze in 3 books that were not Halloween or the team subject related but I loved them all.
I can't wait to read Defy the Night sequel.

OUABH was magical. I love that world. I hope the author can write more books involve in that world

Six Crimson Cranes was also really interesting. There's Dragon in it. The story is also unique. I had never read a book like this before.

A new series from this author and I really liked it. Sort of Robin Hood scenario but instead of money they steal medicine to help the poor. There is a deadly sickness and Tessa is trying to help. The King and Prince are not liked by their people. There is romance and fantasy, YA book.
