The perfect Independence Day read. A classic coming-of-age story set in colonial Boston. Johnny is a talented Silversmith Apprentice, but after a horrific accident he is forced to make a new life for himself. #Newbery

The Wheel on the School | Meindert De Jong

1955 Newbery winner. In a small town in the Netherlands a school (5 boys, 1 girl) work to bring storks back to town. They make friends with several old people in town, learn how different people have different strengths, and how important teamwork is. A great book and very much still relevant and very much worth reading! I had never heard of this and did not read it as a kid, which makes me kind of sad. #newbery

BarbaraBB I have never heard of this one too, living in the Netherlands. Must check out! 8mo
DreesReads It‘s really sweet and perfect for Newbery-aged kids! You‘ll have to tell me how realistic the setting is. 8mo

What was your favorite book as a child? This was mine.

“The dog was lost. He had no name, and no one to love him. He has only the silent, empty countryside, and a few crumbs and bare bones he could pick up. He had only himself, and he was afraid.“

My third-grade teacher, Gloria Cutrer, read it aloud in class. You're never too old for somebody to read a book to you. #MG #Newbery

On My Honor | Marion Dane Bauer

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I just listened to this1986 #Newbery Honor book for the first time. It was such a tragic story with hard life lessons. According to what I read on the internet, it was based on true events which makes it even sadder.
I thought I remembered watching this on an ABC Afterschool special, when I was a kid. Does anyone else remember that? I couldn't find it on YouTube, I wanted to watch it again. #MiddleGradeMay @SaturnDoo @megnews

marleed I used to read tween books with my daughter and chose the Newberry books because if she liked them they‘d still be around for her kids. We sure read a lot of dead tween books! I‘d cry. My daughter would laugh at me - not a cryer! 9mo
Peddler410 This is one that had stayed with me forever. I was in middle school when it came out and read it at that time. 9mo
megnews I had not heard of this. How sad. 9mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I just finished this wonderful duology. I can see why it was a #Newbery honor book. It's great for fans of Anne of Green Gables, or history lovers. #WW2 #middlegradeMay is off to an amazing start, these two will be hard to beat.
@megnews Have you read these?

megnews I have not but The War that Saved My Life is on my tbr. 9mo

This was one of my #MakeMeReadIt picks from August. I‘m trying to finish them this month rather than give up on them! This was a short book, & is a #Newbery award winner as well. For me, this was just kind of average. I‘m glad I read it, but I probably won‘t re-read it. The story of Karana being abandoned on her island was neat, but there wasn‘t anything that stood out to me. On to the next one!
#mtTBR

SleepyDragon I'm still reading some of my #MakeMeReadIt stack as well, though not necessarily in order any more. Lol 1y

I liked this one and so did my daughter. The illustrations are fun and colorful. And the story is simple but cute and includes lower income neighborhoods and people of color, which is sadly rare for picture books. The message too, to look for the bright side, is great. But I am confused as to why this won the Newbery Medal in 2016 when the award usually goes to novels. #newbery

LibrarianJen I remember reading an article or two about the award given to this and how people were surprised. I ❤️ Matt de la Peña! 2y
thebluestocking @LibrarianJen I‘ll have to go hunting. It‘s a great book, it just doesn‘t seem to fit in the Newbery category. 2y
LibrarianJen I think because it‘s a diverse read and there isn‘t really anything like it. 2y

Finished June 2017 as part of my #Newbery challenge. This book is a mystery for children. I also think every child can identify with wanting to run away. This would make a great book to read a little each night before bed.
