The Living Dead | Daniel Kraus, George A. Romero
35 posts | 13 read | 30 to read
New York Times bestselling author Daniel Kraus completes George A. Romero's brand-new masterpiece of zombie horror, the massive novel left unfinished at Romero's death! George A. Romero invented the modern zombie with Night of the Living Dead, creating a monster that has become a key part of pop culture. Romero often felt hemmed in by the constraints of film-making. To tell the story of the rise of the zombies and the fall of humanity the way it should be told, Romero turned to fiction. Unfortunately, when he died, the story was incomplete. Enter Daniel Kraus, co-author, with Guillermo del Toro, of the New York Times bestseller The Shape of Water (based on the Academy Award-winning movie) and Trollhunters (which became an Emmy Award-winning series), and author of The Death and Life of Zebulon Finch (an Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Book of the Year). A lifelong Romero fan, Kraus was honored to be asked, by Romero's widow, to complete The Living Dead. Set in the present day, The Living Dead is an entirely new tale, the story of the zombie plague as George A. Romero wanted to tell it. It begins with one body. A pair of medical examiners find themselves battling a dead man who wont stay dead. It spreads quickly. In a Midwestern trailer park, a Black teenage girl and a Muslim immigrant battle newly-risen friends and family. On a US aircraft carrier, living sailors hide from dead ones while a fanatic makes a new religion out of death. At a cable news station, a surviving anchor keeps broadcasting while his undead colleagues try to devour him. In DC, an autistic federal employee charts the outbreak, preserving data for a future that may never come. Everywhere, people are targeted by both the living and the dead. We think we know how this story ends. We. Are. Wrong.

Maybe a little too sprawling for its own good, but I loved this. Remarkably written and confidently told. No other zombie book is quite like this one.

Not surprisingly, The Living Dead reads like it was written by someone with a filmmaker‘s eye. What is surprising is that it seems Romero wrote very little of it. Kraus was brought in after Romero‘s passing to try and make something of the notes, sketches, and unpolished chapters Romero had been working on intermittently for over 30 years.

Kraus nails it. The novel feels wholly Romero, from all the director‘s refinement to his blemishes.

I told my husband today “I deserve books”. I‘m exhausted. The last four years of my life have been some of the hardest and most tumultuous in my existence. All I want to do is read. And learn. And read. I‘m happy today and I deserve that.

I finished this one in the last weekend of September. I loved it. This is an epic novel. There are, of course, zombies, but there is so much more here. I loved many of the characters and the social commentary. It‘s been a week and I‘m still thinking about it. I may have told my husband several times that we deserve a zombie apocalypse as we watched the news.

Reggie, thank you so much for sending me this chunkster! Also, you‘re review is ⬇️

Bookzombie excellent and everyone should go check it out. @Reggie 3y
kamoorephoto Been thinking about reading this! 3y
Bookzombie @kamoorephoto I hope you like it when you get to it! 3y
Reggie I‘m so glad you liked it, Margie! The one that keeps coming back into my head is the section Bad vs Badder about the news. And yes, I woke up today to the oil spill in California and just thought-Zombies take us away. Just one of the many things lately. 3y
Bookzombie Yes! That section keeps coming back up for me too. Yes, sadly there is something almost everyday where I think that. Thank you again for sending me this one! 3y

#LittensDressedInBlood Today‘s prompt is Dead Man‘s Party and my mind went straight to zombies.
Although, now I‘m wondering why I didn‘t think of vampires. Or ghosts. Or a party where someone dies. Or Christmas or Easter books. Hmmm.

Reggie, you are the best! Thank you so much for the books! I actually opened it last week, which is why the bag of chocolate is empty, but I‘m shit about posting in a timely manner. Your gift brought a lot of cheer to me during a rough week. 😊 Also, I love the card. Thank you so much again!

1) Pet Sematary & World War Z.
2) Night of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead & 28 Days Later.
3) Books: The Girl With all the Gifts, Survivor Song, The Loop (JR Johnson). The tagged book is the one 2020 horror book highest on my TBR. Movies: REC 2, Dead Snow 2, Contracted, Wyrmwood, The Crazies.
@TheNeverendingTBR #spookysaturday

TheNeverendingTBR Good few recommendations here for me, thanks for playing along; I'll need to stack some of these!! 🧟‍♀️ 3y
Reggie Unpopular opinion-Girl with all the Gifts booorrriiing. Lol I need to get to that Loop. And yes to WWZ. I love Brooks. 3y
NikkiM5 Nice, I will have to check out Loop, Wyrmwood and Dead Snow. @Reggie I liked The Girl with all the Gifts book, but not the movie. 3y
vivastory @NikkiM5 I hope you enjoy them. The Loop is a pretty outrageous book. I didn't care very much for the first Dead Snow. But DS 2 is a silly & fun zombie movie. 3y

I loved this book. George Romero died in 2017. Shortly after Daniel Kraus gets a call from his estate asking if he would be willing to finish this novel George was working on. The result is a seamlessly written, epic, zombie novel. There is A LOT of social commentary in here and it‘s all relevant. I always say it but zombie books are never about the zombies. This one‘s about us and how out of touch we‘ve become as people, with ourselves, each 👇🏼

Reggie other, the earth. A good zombie pick! 4y

Reggie @Bette That‘s a hard show. I checked out after they killed Glen off. I just remember Morgan‘s speech to Rick where he says why you taking all the guns. Cause it means you got something good. Which means someone else wants to take it. 4y

Greer, a young Black woman, has just escaped the zombies from her trailer park with a Syrian refugee, Fadi. They make it to town to see if they can save her brother where they come upon a group of 300 angry white people about to take on a group of 40 Syrian refugees because the violence being reported around the nation is surely because of people not like them. I keep reading horror thinking as long as we haven‘t gotten there yet we‘re ok, and👇🏼

Reggie yet, it just feels like we‘re just missing the zombies. 4y

Reggie @Centique Lolololol I kinda hope it‘s zombies and not emancipated AIs because the one book I read about the EAIs, they turned on us and to kill us off they poisoned all the water sources with mercury. I just don‘t think the zombies have that in them. 😝 4y

Centique “You have to be shitting me” is the perfect response in this situation. I wish journalists got to say that on the news sometimes. 😩 4y

Daniel Kraus has been on a virtual tour in support of the tagged book. Two nights ago he was joined by Mary Roach, which is a really strange pairing & yet also makes sense in a weird way. Tonight he is in conversation with Josh Malerman. Link to his conversation w/ Mary Roach below:

This was a long winded book! I felt like it could have been shorter and still packed a punch.
This book isn‘t just about Zombies. It‘s about the monsters that people can become. In the Walking Dead, Rick says,‘Kill the dead. Fear the living.‘ This holds true even in this book.

This was such an adventure! While I expected the horror and gore I definitely wasn‘t expecting the focus to shift towards the monsters humans can be. The characters were very well developed and I came to really care about what happened to them. The ending had more loose ends then I would have preferred but still a great epic work of horror. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

A very detailed and epic novel that tells the story of the zombie outbreak from the very first day and all the way through to 15 years later. And when I say epic... I mean epic. The book's cast of characters are many, each having their own extensive story, location, background, and experiences. Overall I really enjoyed this 656 page book and I give it a solid 4 stars but I felt like it could have been shorter and still have been just as effective.

**Publishes June 9, 2020**
Although this book doesn't come out for awhile, The Living Dead was something George Romero had been working on for quite awhile. He died before he could complete it, but Kraus stepped in and finished it. Like Romero's movies, there's a ton of gore. But the book follows a few survivors (just a few, DON'T GET ATTACHED) in the decades after the first zombie attack, as humans are forced to reexamine their place on earth.
