The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life Lessons Down on Mischief Farm | Hilarie Burton
43 posts | 35 read | 34 to read
The beloved actress and star of One Tree Hill, White Collar, and Lethal Weapon, Hilarie Burton, tells the inspiring story of leaving Hollywood for a radically different kind of life in upstate New York with her husband Jeffrey Dean Morgana celebration of community, family, and the value of hard work in small town America. While Hilarie Burtons hectic lifestyle as an actress in New York and Los Angeles gave her a comfortable life, it did not fulfill her spiritually or emotionally. After the birth of their first son, she and her husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the star of The Walking Dead, decided to make a major change: they bought a working farm in Rhinebeck, New York, and began a new chapter in their lives. The Rural Diaries chronicles her inspiring story of farm life: chopping wood, making dandelion wine, building chicken coops. Burton looks back at her transition from urban to country livingdiscovering how to manage a farm while raising her son and making friends with her new neighbors. She mixes charming stories of learning to raise alpacas and buying and revitalizing the towns beloved candy store, Samuels Sweet Shoppe with good friend Paul Rudd and his wife Julie, with raw observations on the ups and downs of marriage and her struggles with infertility. Burton also includes delicious recipes that can be made with fresh ingredients at home. Burtons charisma, wide eyed attitude, and fortitudeboth internal and physicalpropels this moving story of transformation and self-discovery. The Rural Diaries honors the values and lifestyle of small-town America and offers inspiration for anyone longing to embark on their own unconventional journey. The Rural Diaries includes 16 pages of color photographs.

This book makes me so happy ❤️ I grew up watching oth and LOVING Hilarie Burton. Listening to her talk about her life was so comforting and I can‘t wait to listen to it every summer now 🥹❤️ I deeply enjoyed this one ❤️ Also, her husband is Jeffery Dean Morgan (Negan on Walking Dead) 🤤

KathyWheeler I‘ve seen a couple of her Christmas movies, and liked her in those. I‘m a big Jeffrey Dean Morgan fan, but my first thought isn‘t Negan, it‘s John Winchester in Supernatural. 😊 8mo

This is perfect for fans of Hilarie Burton Morgan and her husband. They seem to live an idyllic life on their farm in a small town in New York. It honestly sounds amazing.

swishandflick In my head she will always be Peyton and I love her. Gonna have to check this out at some point! That's the life I want more and more each day. 10mo
Kristy_K @swishandflick She has a little of that spunk that Peyton did! And same! I was envious the whole time I read about their farm and town. 10mo

It was a sweet, little memoir. Not my favorite but as someone who once watched her hit teen drama as a teen myself, it was interesting to read how her life pivoted so drastically to small town farm life. Overall quick, decent read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I *might* have chosen this celebrity memoir because I have a massive crush on her husband... but I can honestly say this was the best celebrity memoir that I've ever read. I know it's a cliché, but she and her hubby come across as a genuine people who just happen to act for a living. Move over, Kristen and Dax, I might have a new favourite celebrity couple. That is high praise coming from me.

kplovesbooks Love her!! She really does seem like such a REAL person who genuinely cares about other people. I haven't read this yet but I so should! ♥️♥️ 3y

1. Love a rural setting, doesn't matter what country it's in
2. No preference for gender. I'm even good with unpredictable or downright unpleasant at times.

I was surprised by myself when I picked this up and even more surprised by how hard it was to stop listening and do other things. I was drawn to this because of my dream of moving to a farm (which will remain a dream because it would go well for no one in reality) but left it a fan of HBM, This was a lovely memoir about a farm certainly, but also the creation of a family and about a community and the joys and pains that came with it all.

If I could give this book all the stars I would. I love Hilarie Burton Morgan more than words can explain. She‘s so relatable, down to earth, honest, kind, & straightforward. This book is a very raw & open look into her life & the family she‘s created not only with her husband & kids, but with her community. You‘ll laugh, you‘ll cry, you‘ll get angry. This book doesn‘t disappoint.

We have had quite a cool weekend so far in my little town, with a bit of rain, and then a touch of sun, to make everyone feel a little relieved. I'm kind of hoping for a warmer winter, with no snow, and temperatures, that we can all tolerate. Am I asking too much maybe?

I‘m looking forward to reading this book by actress Hilarie Burton, about life on the farm she has with her husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I started following them when they adopted an emu and donkey called Jack and Diane from an NC animal rescue. #RuralSetting #BiblioMAYnia

Just got it in the mail yesterday and I'm already done reading it, yes it was that good! It was an amazing story of her life as just a normal women going through hardships like everyone. Her book didn't even feel like I was reading, more like having a conversation. I loved the recipies she threw in at random points in the book. A lot of the book felt like she was talking about one thing, then jumping to another, which made it feel like talking

I loved this! A memoir about starting over, with a nice quiet life on a farm in rural NY. An easy read and I could see it play out in my head. It begins after One Tree Hill. There is a lot of nature, food, renovation, hands-in-the-earth in here, all things I love in memoirs. Hilarie talks candidly about her relationship with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, friendship, parenting, and other personal struggles and successes. Uplifting and delightful overall 5⭐️

This reads like a Hallmark movie, her seemingly perfect life fell apart, then she met a great guy & fell in love instantly, they bought a farm in a quaint town w/a Christmas festival & live happily ever after. Yet its also refreshingly real. She's honest about their relationship, her difficulties getting pregnant, miscarriages & the depression that followed.
Hilarie said it best "Folks, this is a love letter. To a town. To a farm. To a man."

Everything in it felt genuine and real and def felt like a real person and not a celebrity. Comes out March 5.
