You Can Thank Me Later
You Can Thank Me Later : A Novella | Kelly Harms
22 posts | 25 read | 1 to read
A short and sweet listen that’ll leave you wanting second helpings, You Can Thank Me Later follows an unforgettable family over the course of three Thanksgivings.
When the Dickenson clan sits down for Thanksgiving dinner in 2016, it is the last holiday where their tight-knit family will ever be the same. Oldest brother Pete and his wife are expecting their first child. Youngest sibling Sophie is too busy running her restaurant. The Little Plum, to bother with any kind of social life. And middle child Charlie’s happy, uncomplicated life as a midwestern science professor is upended when his wife Annette is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Knowing this will be her last Thanksgiving, Annette asks Sophie to look after Charlie after she’s gone. Which would be a lot easier if Charlie didn’t show up with an insufferable new girlfriend at the next holiday meal.
From the best-selling author of The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, this heartwarming novella embraces the spirit and gratitude of the holiday, and shows how a family’s love can endure everything.

This was my response for the January 2024 #TBRTarot challenge to read a book that starts with the word you. I didn‘t dislike it. I think it was predictable and a little too schmaltzy, but it is what it is.

CBee Looks like it was short, so that‘s nice 😊 4mo
CatLass007 @CBee It was short. I think the author tried to cram too much into such a short work. 4mo
AnnCrystal For a moment there, I assumed that this was an Adrian Monk mystery LOL 😂!! The character said that a lot on the TV show. 4mo

CatLass007 @AnnCrystal Too funny! I don‘t remember that part at all. I don‘t think I‘ve seen all the episodes. There are seven books in the Monk series on Audible and there are more in print. Have you read any of them? 4mo
AnnCrystal I have one, two (possibly a handful...not sure). Quite shamefully, I haven't read them yet! I know, I know!

We have watched the entire TV show (possibly a hundred times by now😂). One of the ones that I can have on (like my favorite music) while doing things LOL. Oh, such a good show.

4mo
CatLass007 @AnnCrystal On Audible they‘re included with my subscription. But I haven‘t read any of them either. That‘s how I am about Bones. It‘s like comfort food for the brain. 4mo
AnnCrystal @CatLass007 oh, that is a good way to describe it 👏☺️ 🎬🥰👍. 4mo

I really liked this seasonal novella that features three siblings‘ Thanksgiving get-togethers over six years. They and their significant others cope with births, loss, happiness, and sadness in a way that felt honest and true.

Other reviewers are correct that the MC is awful for a large part of this story. But I think it was her grief that made her so selfish. And it ended well.

Narration by Lauren Fortgang was great.

1. My mom and I are hosting Thanksgiving at our house. My mom‘s boyfriend and his daughter are coming over to our house and I‘m helping my mom in the kitchen with the food. My brother and my sister in law won‘t be joining us this Thanksgiving because they‘re in Taiwan visiting her family.

2. I feel like the tagged book I read recently embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving. I enjoyed it but I‘m not going to reread it next year.

Here‘s my review for a book I finished reading this afternoon.

Finished this one this morning. What initially drew me to this book was the title because it‘s very close to the Monk catchphrase, “You‘ll Thank Me Later” 😅 I wouldn‘t categorize this as holiday fluff necessarily, but all the elements are there with some heavy moments too. I really enjoyed it. #WinterReadathon

A good Thanksgiving read! Over three Thanksgivings, three siblings navigate loss, grief, friendship, birth, and moving forward. Sad in places but also heartwarming.

Three siblings at three Thanksgivings: we listen as their relationships with significant others and with each other transform over time. From births, death, and family trauma, this novella demonstrates well how we deal with massive changes in our lives and the lives of people we are close to, for better or worse. Very well done: writing and narrating. #litsyatoz #letterY

The only #LetterY we could find!! It‘s a novella about a Thanksgiving dinner. One more letter and it‘s going to be a challenge, too!! #AlphabetGame @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks for coming up with this game!

You Can Thank Me Later by Kelly Harms
Sweet thanksgiving read, sad but and easy read. I think Sophie is a little self centered but, I would be too after losing my best friend. Grief is a life stealing bastard. Book #68 in 2021

Slow to start, but it expands into a more interesting read a few chapters in. I wish the characters had more dimension. Regardless, it was enjoyable and an easy listen. 3 stars.

I really enjoyed this Audibles Original book yesterday. It was a great distraction while I was getting some cleaning, cooking, and decorating done. A great day-before-Thanksgiving day read!

I listened to this yesterday while #audiocooking - it‘s short and sweet and perfect for a Thanksgiving read. The main character was not my favorite, but she got a little better towards the end. This was a freebie from Audible this month so it‘s a win-win. 4⭐️

Happy Thanksgiving to my Litsy family! 🦃 And for those who don‘t celebrate Thanksgiving, Happy Thursday! 🤗

A sweet story about love, loss, moving on, family and the power of friendship all wrapped in festive Thanksgiving spirit. Since we don't celebrate this holiday here in Europe, I didn't realize today's Thanksgiving until after I finished this Audible Original and googled when it is. What a coincidence! Let me grab this opportunity to wish everyone happy stuffed turkey day! 🦃

Deifio Do you have like a harvest festival in Hungary? In Germany we do, but it'slike beginning of October. Thanksgiving is like a harvest festival isn't it? 4y
starlight97 Yes I believe the tradition of the holiday comes from giving thanks to good harvest. We do have harvest festivals here but they don't have any set dates, they're scattered throughout the harvest season. 4y

Meh. Sophie wasn't appealing, which diminishes the whole story. It was a free Audible original, so all that was lost is a few hours of my time. Since I have nothing primo in my Overdrive pipeline, I was really scrounging for something to read while I'm shelving/reshelving the books we've accumulated.
