Bailedbailed

I'm bailing πŸ˜πŸ€”πŸ˜«.
Unlike me but I've read 649 pages and I'm bored... it's very formulaic and there's such an undercurrent of sexual assault.
It's my birthday and I'm allowed to bail!!! 😁😁

readordierachel Happy birthday! πŸŽ‰ 3y

After a pleasant hour tidying the garden I've managed another 50 pages of this.
Have to say, there's some suggestion of sexual assault which is making me very uneasy πŸ€¨πŸ™πŸ™ and kind of unnecessary. It coujd be the dated aspect in writing though. It was more 'accepted ' in the eighties?

This is the 4th book by Erskine which I've read, after being introduced to her writing in the first lockdown.
It's a long one! I believe it's her most famous?
On starting, It is quite dated in its content but I imagine that'll pass me by as I keep reading!

Day6/7 Books that made an impression.

This is where my love affair with historical fiction began. I was about 14 when I read this.

I've been reading this one for months and months. But I did really enjoy it in the end. I lost some interest about half-way through and was turned off by a few violent scenes, but the last 200 pages were so captivating! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Melissa_J Love this book!! Have you read Child of the Phoenix? It‘s my favourite Erskine novel. 6y
Ms.Story @Melissa_J I haven't read that one yet, but I'll check it out! I loved Sleeper's Castle though 😊 6y

My Mum and I used to read Barbara Erskine together. This was her very loved and well read copy of her favourite. It was on her bed side cabinet when we cleared her flat after she died and I had to keep it (despite having 3 copies of my own!).

@Cinfhen
An unforgettable book - because it‘s brilliant and because it‘s the first book my Mum and I read as a buddy read! 30 years ago! She re-read it so many times I think this is the 3rd one I brought her. I kept it from her bed side table when she passed on. You can see how loved it was the front is so worn.

Cinfhen That's amazing, Trish πŸ’žπŸ’žtruly #unforgettable and how treasured of a memory 6y

TrishB @batsy we read at least one book a month together πŸ‘πŸ» I‘ve loved to see her developing her own preferences- she loves Hardy whom I have disliked since school - but am re-reading and appreciating a bit more (I wouldn‘t say a fan still!) 6y

Because The Sleepers Castle has just released it spurned me into reading this.An action packed historical fiction dual time regression novel set in 12th Century Wales which thrusts you back in to the 20th Century. It features a sassy news reporter who finds out she was Matilda of Hay,Wife of William Da Braose,in love with the Knight Richard De Clare and fleeing the death threats of King John.Released 25yrs ago it has really stood the test of time!

Loreen One of my favorites! I'm glad you enjoyed it. πŸ‘πŸΌ 8y
CleverGirl I loooooved this book. I think I read it because Diana Gabaldon recommended it in The Outlandish Companion. It did not disappoint! 8y
Whatannareads I loved this book read this must be nearly 10 years ago now! She has a recent one called sleepers castle that's set in Hay like this one x 7y
