Frozen in Time
Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II | MItchell Zuckoff
#1 New York Times bestseller Frozen in Time is a gripping true story of survival, bravery, and honor in the vast Arctic wilderness during World War II, from the author of New York Times bestseller Lost in Shangri-La. On November 5, 1942, a US cargo plane slammed into the Greenland Ice Cap. Four days later, the B-17 assigned to the search-and-rescue mission became lost in a blinding storm and also crashed. Miraculously, all nine men on board survived, and the US military launched a daring rescue operation. But after picking up one man, the Grumman Duck amphibious plane flew into a severe storm and vanished. Frozen in Time tells the story of these crashes and the fate of the survivors, bringing vividly to life their battle to endure 148 days of the brutal Arctic winter, until an expedition headed by famed Arctic explorer Bernt Balchen brought them to safety. Mitchell Zuckoff takes the reader deep into the most hostile environment on earth, through hurricane-force winds, vicious blizzards, and subzero temperatures. Moving forward to today, he recounts the efforts of the Coast Guard and North South Polar Inc. led by indefatigable dreamer Lou Sapienza who worked for years to solve the mystery of the Ducks last flight and recover the remains of its crew. A breathtaking blend of mystery and adventure Mitchell Zuckoff's Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices of our military personnel and a tribute to the everyday heroism of the US Coast Guard.

Looking for some riveting nonfiction? Try this one! 🎧

1942. Greenland. A plane of men goes down, the plane of men sent to rescue them goes down, the plane of men sent to rescue the downed rescuers goes down…😬

So much survival, so much hardship, so much ice, so much hope. I loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Found myself reading well after my normal lights out. Harrowing and sad but a reminder of how heroic people can be. It really touched me to hear about the families left behind. Only drawback were the chapters on the current discovery; that just didn‘t seem to jive with me.

Simona Welcome to Litsy❣️ 3y

#MOvember #Frozen Another song that gives me an 👂🏼🐛🎶 After reading and LOVING Fall and Rise by Zuckoff, I immediately checked out his backlist. I borrowed this #NF audio from Hoopla but it didn‘t hold my interest 🥶🤭maybe print would be better🤔

vivastory I'm stacking Fall & Rise, but I'm going to be honest, I think I can only handle one 9/11 book per year & I met my quota already with the amazing 4y
vivastory So it will probably be several months before I read it 4y
Cinfhen I completely understand @vivastory but the Zuckoff book will stay with me for a very long time. For such a comprehensive piece of work it felt very intimate. I‘ve heard equally good things about 4y

BarbaraBB I loved Madonna with dark hair. And I love this song 🖤 4y
BarbaraBB @vivastory I got a copy of The Only Plane in the Sky for my birthday. My daughter immediately dove into it and is reading parts of it aloud. It does seem amazing and heartbreakingly intimate. 4y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I agree about the song, I think it's one of my favorites by Madonna 4y
HOTPock3tt Omg this song and this ALBUM!!! ♥️🙌🏽🎉 I remember when this video debuted on total request live and we were all ===>😱Amazing!! I miss this era 4y
Cinfhen I once took my daughter to TRL, they told me I was too old and would have to wait outside @HOTPock3tt can you imagine??!? 😂😂😂of all the indignities 4y
HOTPock3tt @Cinfhen That‘s ridiculous and sounds like discrimination! 😱 4y
Bookzombie @Cinfhen Excuse my language, but that is shitty about TRL. 4y
Cinfhen @Bookzombie @HOTPock3tt they said they only admitted people aged 16-25!!! Total discrimination!!! And yes, very shitty 😝 4y
HOTPock3tt Gosh well at this point I wouldn‘t be admitted either 🤣 @Cinfhen 4y
Cinfhen Ha @HOTPock3tt we both outlasted TRL!!! 4y
HOTPock3tt I know right!!!! 😎✌️ @Cinfhen 4y

(Disclaimer: I listened to the Audio) For fans of history, adventure and treasure hunts, this book will capture you. The search for lost WWII planes and crew, with retrospective narrative about what the crews were going through at the time of being lost. The writing was clear and concise, with a storyline that was hard to turn off.

Looks like a lot of Littens are hitting their #100 books read this year! Count me in! I'm thinking I need to raise my goal for next year... #BlameLitsy

Leftcoastzen Congratulations! My goal is 80 and I‘m on track, don‘t think I will ever be at 100. 6y
RealBooks4ever Thanks @Leftcoastzen ! It's not really the # that counts, it's the enjoyment of the books, right? But its nice to see certain levels achieved. I've never reached 100 before! 💜 6y
cajunsyd Congrats!!! 6y

Non-fiction books are my FAVORITE. I love rescue stories, celebrity memoirs, history books, travel memoirs, American politics, sailing stories, food memoirs, etc. I've got bookcases full of these. I ❤️ it all because I get to live vicariously through these experiences, instead of being stuck in a small Alabama town. #septphotochallenge #nonfiction 📚👘🌎✈️🗿(Btw, I love a good nonfiction recommendation!)

Cinfhen Totally agree 😊 8y
Leelee08 @Cinfhen 😊😊😊 8y
Cinfhen @Leelee08 I read Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff, it was pretty good, have you tried it? 8y

Leelee08 @Cinfhen Yes, that's one of my favorites! 8y
Cinfhen @Leelee08 how about Lost city of Z? I REALLY enjoyed the author's humor and writing style & Brain on Fire was fascinating. They are both being adapted into movies. 8y
Megabooks I love non-fiction, too! 8y
Cinfhen I also really liked Sex on the Moon because of the sheer audacity and stupidity that was taken by a smart NASA intern 8y
Eyelit I 💙 everything about this photo 8y
Leelee08 @Cinfhen I own Lost City of Z but I haven't read it yet. I need to get on that.... 8y
Leelee08 @Ebooksandcooks Thank you so much for the recs! 8y
Leelee08 @Eyelit Aww thank you! I could stare at bookshelves all day...😍😍😍 8y
