The Coming Plague
The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance | Laurie Garrett
After four decades of assuming that the conquest of all infectous diseases was imminent, people on all continents now find themselves besieged by AIDS, drug-resistant tuberculosis, cholera that defies chlorine water treatment, and exotic viruses that can kill in a matter of hours. Based on extensive interviews with leading experts in virology, molecular biology, disease ecology and medicine, as well as field research in sub-Saharan Africa, Western Euope, Central America and the United States, The Coming Plague takes readers from the savannas of eastern Bolivia to the rain forests of northen Zaire on a harrowing, fifty year journey through our battles with the microbes, and tells us what must be done to prevent the coming plague.

Bingo #3! #bookspinbingo

This may be it. We‘ll see if I delve into a couple short owned books or get wrapped up in library/ebooks.

TheYankeeIrregular What is bookspinbingo? 3y
Hooked_on_books @TheYankeeIrregular It is the brainchild of @TheAromaofBooks . You stack or list 20-25 books and each month she picks numbers and sets them into a bingo board. Then you put your selected books in the corresponding spaces (with free spaces if you chose 20) and try to get bingos. It‘s a fun way to try to reduce your number of unread books or encourage yourself to read different books. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @TheYankeeIrregular - Anyone is welcome to join!! If you're interested, more details can be found on my master post - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 Feel free to ask questions but @Hooked_on_Books did a great job summarizing the basics!!! 3y
TheYankeeIrregular Thank you! Sounds like fun. I'll try it. 3y

This chunk of a book weaves together hard science with narrative to tell the story of recent epidemics, how they were approached, and how our behaviors as individuals and society impact our interactions with microbes. It‘s outstanding but dense and required a reading schedule for me to finish, as it‘s daunting. I first read 1/2 this book over 20 years ago and finally returned and read the whole thing. I feel accomplished!

This determination was made as the result of a “war games” evaluating a pandemic scenario at a major infectious diseases conference. In 1989. So glad we learned from that. 😑

“All in all, it was a clever design that caught on immediately, despite a widespread hue and cry about the immorality of such a device. It was said that tampon insertion stimulated the female excitatory nerves, prompting wanton masturbation.”

Nope, can‘t say I‘ve ever experienced that “side effect!” 🙄

BarbaraBB Haha no. You‘d have thought a man wrote this 😂 3y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB In the larger context in the book, I‘m pretty sure the author is poking fun at the men who thought this. Men have come up with some pretty stupid things about women over the years! 3y
Megabooks Lol. No. Some men have no understanding of women. Eff the patriarchy!! 3y

MicheleinPhilly 😂😂😂 3y
GingerAntics Wow, they think that excites us? Seriously? No wonder some men really suck in bed. They‘re taking the tampon approach. 🤦🏼‍♀️ what @Megabooks and @Hooked_on_books said. Wow, the stupidity really is shocking sometimes. 3y
CarolynM Really? Some people's ideas of morality are just plain weird. And as for the idea that using a tampon is enjoyable... [shakes head] unbelievable! 3y

Just when I didn‘t think I could possibly be more anxious about COVID-19, Kindle books about pandemics go on Daily Deal. Sure, I bought them!

LiteraryinLawrence I‘m so anxious too, Barbara! It‘s really scary. 4y
Amiable I‘ve been obsessed with pandemics for years—even before this one! 😬 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amiable Me too. I should have already read these ... 4y
Amiable @BarbaraTheBibliophage I have read the second one already. I also just ordered another one about the 1918 pandemic: 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amiable @Crazeedi Adding both of those to my TBR 4y
Amiable @Crazeedi That John Barry book is one of my all-time favorite books about pandemics. 4y
Crazeedi @Amiable I agree! 4y

There are a lot of problematic things in this, but I for sure would‘ve died of the great influenza if I had to avoid libraries with old books 😅

When you get a little break from mommy duties, you read about plagues, risk a terrible stomach day with a cup of coffee 😅, and listen to the Sigur Ros Pandora station. #KillingIt 😂😂😂

At the Cleveland Clinic having more tests run on my stomach and I‘ll be here for several hours with lots of wait time between the scans. So a great opportunity to get some quality reading time. I feel like this is a great place to read about infectious diseases lol

Well, it looks like I‘m going to be in back-to-back trials for the next 4 weeks, including a First Degree Murder with a Firearm case. So I‘m getting some chill time in while I still can. On to this book that has been raved about on here. #NonFictionLove

Lizpixie Very nice! Yours is a lot neater than mine, I have a tendency to stuff whatever's at hand in with my books. Awful habit which I have to break, otherwise I'll run out of room for the things that matter most. More books! 8y
brendanmleonard I'm so jealous. 8y
StephTKO @Lizpixie I spent a whole week of staycation organizing everything. You're right, it's a double edged sword. I can find everything, but I have officially run out of room. 8y
StephTKO @brendanmleonard It's my life's work. I've been collecting these guys since high school. 8y
brendanmleonard Even more jealous - I've had to rebuild my collection at least 3 times! 8y

BookFreakOut *SWOON* 8y
Lizpixie @brendanmleonard I know how it feels to realise your books are gone. When the hubster built my library, I catalogued all my books to make a database, and realised forty plus books had disappeared. I now only lend books to people I trust, and they all have bookplates and lending cards that are dated 8y
brendanmleonard @Lizpixie while I've definitely lent out books I wish I hadn't, I did a lot of moving in my 20s and left a lot of books with family or people who later sold/got rid of them...and then the last time, I had to sell a big chunk of my library to pay rent. Luckily, that hasn't happened since 2011! 8y
Lizpixie @brendanmleonard I'm sorry for your loss my man! No one should have to choose between your babies and a roof over your head.😢👋📚🏡 8y
StephTKO @Lizpixie I think I want to start doing this too. I was thinking of getting an embosser. 8y
angrylilasian I dream of having a room like this one day! 8y
Alisnazzy When I get back to west palm, can I just set up shop here? K thanks ☺️ 8y
