'Funny, dark and above all, heart-warming, The Nancys is a celebration of what's important in life - which is family, friendship and also: makeovers. R.W.R. McDonald's novel is face-paced, clever and full of wit and repartee. McDonald pays homage to the novel's namesake Nancy Drew, but adds elements of RuPaul and Shirley Barrett's The Bus on Thursday. The result is a work of fiction that is smart, darkly comic and, in the very best of ways, completely bizarre.' - Katherine Collette, author of The Helpline 'A delight - moving and hilarious. I loved every minute I spent with these characters.' - Paddy O'Reilly 'How does The Nancys manage to be both sharp and blackly funny, but also uplifting and sweet?' - Toni Jordan Tippy Chan is eleven and lives in a small town in a very quiet part of the world - the place her Uncle Pike escaped from the first chance he got as a teenager. Now Pike is back with his new boyfriend Devon to look after Tippy while her mum's on a cruise. Tippy is in love with her uncle's old Nancy Drew books, especially the early ones where Nancy was sixteen and did whatever she wanted. She wants to be Nancy and is desperate to solve a real mystery. When her teacher's body is found beside Riverstone's only traffic light, Tippy's moment has arrived. She and her minders form The Nancys, a secret amateur detective club. But what starts as a bonding and sightseeing adventure quickly morphs into something far more dangerous. A wrongful arrest, a close call with the murderer, and an intervention from Tippy's mum all conspire against The Nancys. But regardless of their own safety, and despite the constant distraction of questionable fashion choices in the town that style forgot, The Nancys know only they can stop the killer from striking again. The Nancys is gripping and glorious, a heart-warming novel for anyone who's ever felt they were on the outside looking in. At its heart it is about the family we make and how we must summon the courage to face the truth, no matter what the cost may be.

1. They kind of follow you everywhere right? 2. My copy, she went through alot. Got her cover ripped at the laundromat and has Aunty Chun‘s vegan sweet chili noodle sauce on a couple of the pages. 3. This was the fun book I needed to start off the New Year. Thank you again for the book, @CarolynM Tippy Chan is an 11yo in a small New Zealand town where her and her Uncle Pyke and his bf Damon will band together, call themselves The Nancys and 👇🏼

Reggie solve a murder. This book kept fighting me because I wanted it to be one thing, funny or thrilling, because there‘s so much over Tippy‘s head innuendo from the Uncle and his bf, but there‘s also a killer on the loose and there was a terrifying scene in here. In the end the book won. Such a delight. Pick!!! 2y
CarolynM Oh, poor book🥺 Glad you enjoyed😃 2y

kyraleseberg I've had this stacked for a couple years, I definitely need to read it! 2y
readordierachel They do 👁 Glad you kicked off the year with a good one! 2y
Reggie @Cathythoughts I love to eat and read. It‘s just so bad for my books. Lol 2y
Reggie @TrishB thanks, TrishB. I hope you‘re feeling better my friend. When I had it, my symptoms lasted for 4 days and this was before the vaccines. Take some vitamins and maybe a probiotic. It‘ll help. 2y
Reggie @erzascarletbookgasm It was! I laughed a lot on it. 2y
Reggie @kyraleseberg You‘ll love it. The uncle and his boyfriend are hilarious. And then it can be tender because of the niece and them being the family they need from each other. It‘s good stuff. 2y
Reggie @readordierachel Thanks, Rachel! There‘s this place called Meow Wolf in Santa Fe where it‘s an art instillation in the shape of a house with many rooms all inside a warehouse and they had this one room with all these huge eyeballs in the walls. This cover reminds me of that, but prettier. 2y
TrishB Thanks Reggie! You certainly got a weird mix of symptoms don‘t you! My daughter has got loads of stuff for me and lines them up in the mornings outside the door for me to take! She‘s a mix of a sergeant major and Florence Nightingale! 2y
Centique I‘d never even heard of this! (But somehow I‘ve stacked it?) Sounds brilliant. I love the story of how the book fought you and survived! (edited) 2y

This has been on my TBR for ages, and fortuitously ended up on my December list, I didn‘t even realize it was a #HolidayRead until I started it. It‘s a very satisfying modern day homage to Nancy Drew. Not exactly a believable mystery, but easy to loose yourself in and loads of fun. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious

StayCurious Wow I love this premise! 2y
CarolynM Such a fun book. I need to read the sequel soon 2y

Ebook from the library. Always challenging to get a good pick. This was a great read with some pertinent themes.
Libby loan expired midway through and I had to resume a few weeks later.
Book 78

CarolynM It's fun, isn't it? I've got to get around to Nancy Business soon. 3y

Couldn‘t resist!

I‘m generally quite devoted to wearing ballet flats but recently, I did take a detour through Mountfords and come out with some boots - which reminded me that I had ordered some new socks… this is one of three new pairs - the others don‘t match any book covers (that I can currently think of!)

HeathHof Love it! And your treasure trolls!🤩💕 3y

dylanisreading Cute! I've been on the look out for good ballet flats. Is there a brand you would recommend? 3y

11 year old Tippy Chan, grieving the recent loss of her father, is joined by her Uncle Pike and his boyfriend Devon, in playing Nancy Drew when her teacher is murdered shortly after her best friend is severely injured in suspicious circumstances. I was thoroughly charmed and amused by the telling of this story as the grown ups conversations, while faithfully reported, go completely over Tippy's head. Written in Melbourne but set in NZ, #ozfiction?

CarolynM This is the book I mentioned to you recently @Centique Also #Doublespin @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 3y

LeahBergen Well, this sounds delightful! 3y
Centique @CarolynM this sounds wonderful thank you so much. And set near Dunedin! PS also thinking of you guys with the new cases. My sister flew home today and although the bubble is still officially open she‘s going to isolate at home to be extra careful 💕 3y

Do covers sometimes just say YES to you... and before you know it you are walking out of the bookstore with a slightly dazed smile on your face, holding a new book in your hand?

What‘s the best book you‘ve read that maybe isn‘t your usual sort but the cover lured you in?

ralexist The House in the Cerulean Sea definitely drew me to it because of the cover. It just also happened to be a completely wonderful read! 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @ralexist, it was wonderful! 4y
TrishB This one - I love the cover ♥️ 4y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TrishB, funny story : I own Made You Up 😅 but I haven‘t read it... I think it may have been a cover buy 4y
TrishB 😂 the cover is awesome. The book is ok, not 5 star but an ok read. 4y
Caroline2 Yep! I‘m a sucker for a good cover. I got sucked into buying The Binding cause of the beautiful cover...I thought the book itself though was a bit naff! 🙄 4y
Soubhiville I‘m a sucker for a cover with gloomy or smoky or cloudy mountains... I bought Plainsong and Sugar Run and Snow Falls on Cedars entirely because of their covers. I adored Plainsong. The other two were Meh. 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Soubhiville, I‘m not familiar with those books - when I think of mountains on book covers, I think of Tolkien. It‘s interesting how much of a role a book cover plays. 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TrishB, it‘s on my “one of these days” tbr pile 😂 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Caroline2, I enjoyed it - but it falls into the weird fiction genre that I find so appealing 😂 she‘s got a new book out soon 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I love those Pulp! Classics. I have a few of them and may never read them, but the covers are cute. 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick, i haven‘t read mine... 100% bought it because pulp Darcy was just too good! 4y

Glad I didn‘t buy this book. Written by a Kiwi living in Melbourne. I almost gave up as way too much dialogue at the beginning. Most of that smutty gay male conversation which some people may not “ get” which would be good.😊
I guessed the end . Glad I finished as end was touching. But not my best read this year. @MrsMalaprop

N is for The Nancys

Written for adults but with a 11 year old protagonist with a deep love of Nancy Drew and a rather big murder mystery to solve 👁 I ended up getting both my grandparents to read this ☺️ and we all enjoyed it (Nana perhaps most of all)

marleed So cool that you got your grandparents to read. I bet you‘ll have the physical copy in your library always because of that memory! 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @marleed, my grandparents are big readers but it‘s always nice when we can all enjoy the same book ☺️ 4y

I have many thoughts about this book. There was certainly enough mystery to keep me reading, particularly in the second half. The characters were quirky and unique but also felt a bit like caricatures. The dialogue was often weird and the sexual innuendo got boring very quickly. I didn‘t feel it lived up to the quotes on the front so I felt a bit disappointed by the whole thing in the end.

Jeg I agree with you. Perfect review. 👏👏 4y

I‘ve never read a Nancy Drew Mystery and this book makes me think I‘ve missed out. Tippy (11 years old, grieving the recent death of her father) adores Nancy Drew - she admires Nancy‘s fearlessness... her eccentric Uncle arrives to look after her for 2 weeks while Mum goes on a cruise - and well, murder mystery things start to happen, family secrets unravel and well, I teared up on the last page. Ahh. What a fantastic story.

mcipher Nancy is awesome! They‘re like the original cozy mysteries, kind of, and just so comforting. My mom used to read them out loud to me when I was sick, even when I was a teenager, so they have a very soft spot in my heart. 😆 5y
