Call the Nurse
Call the Nurse: True Stories of a Country Nurse on a Scottish Isle | Mary J. MacLeod
Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft housea farmers stone cottageon a small acre of land. Mary assumed duties as the islands district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends. In anecdotes that are by turns funny, sad, moving, and tragic, she recalls them all, the crofters and their laird, the boatmen and tradesmen, young lovers and forbidding churchmen. Against the old-fashioned island culture and the grandeur of mountain and sea unfold indelible stories: a young woman carried through snow for airlift to the hospital; a rescue by boat; the marriage of a gentle giant and the island beauty; a ghostly encounter; the shocking discovery of a woman in chains; the flames of a heather fire at night; an unexploded bomb from World War II; and the joyful, tipsy celebration of a ceilidh. Gaelic fortitude meets a nurses compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland.

I absolutely loved this account of Mary MacLeod‘s time spent on a remote Hebridean island in the early 1970s. Her family wants a break from the hustle and bustle of city life so they move to a small croft house on the island where she serves as nurse to the community. I bought the sequel before I was halfway through because I knew that I would want to read more of her adventures and tales of the people she befriended. #roll100

I enjoyed this telling of a visiting country nurse in the Outer Hebrides. It had a good sense of place, describing the area that is intriguing to me not only in landscape but in culture. Her tales (and chapters) are pretty short and it's easily digestible. There are fun and sad tales in the book; I only wish she'd outlined how they'd renovated the croft where they lived as she had described it as dilapidated when they first moved in. #litsyAtoZ

A look at the life of a nurse on the small island of Papavray during the 1970s. The nurse and her family moved to the island from the London area. She writes with respect regarding the people of the small community. She details her experiences happy and sad. The writing wasn‘t polished but it was engaging.

Shout out to all my fellow nurses, DON‘T FORGET TO CARE FOR YOURSELF. It‘s not easy to do the things we do, and it‘s easy to burn out. So make sure, when you‘ve hung up your super hero scrubs; take some time to care for yourself ❤️#selfcare #nurse #nurselife #lvn #rn #np #poetry

Finally found some time for reading. This nonfiction was great for being able to pick up, put down with each chapter being it's own story. Kind of like a human James Harriott set in Scotland in the 70's.

Being a nurse myself, I'm always up to reading stories about nurses. Whether they are fictional or non-fictional, I always want to know how we are perceived by writers, and ourselves. #nurses

This was a delightful, autobiographical treatment of the author‘s time spent as a nurse on a remote Scottish island. The characters were not extremely well-developed, but were colorful and highly entertaining. After I finished this, I had an overwhelming desire to visit those Scottish islands. Google images is a wonderful thing for satisfying that kind of curiosity.

MrBook Oooh, you talked me into it! 😊👍🏻 8y
