Invincible Summer
Invincible Summer | Alice Adams
41 posts | 30 read | 38 to read
Inseparable through university, Eva, Benedict, Sylvie and Lucien graduate into an exhilarating world on the brink of the new millennium. Eager to shrug off the hardships of her childhood, Eva breaks away to work in the City. Benedict stays behind to complete his PhD in Physics and pine for Eva, while siblings Sylvie and Lucien seek a more bohemian life of art, travel and adventure. As their twenties give way to their thirties, the four friends find their paths diverging as they struggle to navigate broken hearts and thwarted dreams. With every summer that passes, they try to remain as close as they once were - but this is far from easy. One friend's triumph coincides with another's disaster, one finds love as another loses it, one comes to their senses as another is changing their mind . . . And who knows where any of us will be in twenty summers' time? A warm, wise and witty novel about finding the courage to carry on despite life not always turning out as expected, and a powerful testament to love and friendship as the constants in an ever-changing world, Invincible Summer is a dazzling depiction of the highs and lows of adulthood and the greater forces that shape us.

Not great ratings for this one, but I really enjoyed the characters.

Finished my personal summer challenge to read books from my shelves with the word “summer” in the title. Here‘s the final account. Still have 3 or 4 left for next summer! #summerreading #summerinthetitle #buzzwordbookathon

BennettBookworm What a clever challenge! 4y
LeslieO @BennettBookworm It was so fun! And 7 backlist titles off my TBR feels like an accomplishment. 4y

Maybe I‘ll only read books with “summer” in the title all summer long. #buzzword #summerreads

LeahBergen Do it! 😆 4y
LeslieO @LeahBergen As soon as I said this I started reading The Guest List 🤪. But I think I‘m going to read lots with summer in the title because I have so many! And I don‘t read them in other seasons. 4y

The great surprise of the adult world had been that no one really knew what they were doing, and especially not the people who exuded impenetrable confidence.

This has somewhat mixed reviews but I gobbled it up like a delicious summer treat. These folks are just a few years older than me so there was a lot I could relate to as far as cultural touchstones. I also have a number of anniversaries coming up next year so I‘ve been feeling a bit nostalgic for 10, 15, 20 years ago. 4⭐️

After finishing the penultimate book in the Grant County series I was in desperate need of a palate cleanser.

I thought this was an appropriate pick for the penultimate day of summer. I‘m about 20% in and enjoying it thoroughly.

Bring on Fall (and fall temps)!

Starting a new book today, I got this book as a blind date. It was described as a beach read meets Jane Austen. It seems to be a light easy read that I need right now. And I love me new travel steamless wine goblet, even though I use it for water. For snack today is homemade trail mix.

I finished pages 100-300 in one sitting (although the stats don‘t show it for some reason 🤨)

When the nights are cold and you are longing for a catch up with old friends, this is the book to read. Beautifully written and great characters, it‘s easy to relate to the happiness and pains of four college friends as they navigate the craziness of life over a twenty year period. Highly recommend!

It's not often I pick up a book so dreadful I can't make myself finish it. I don't know how this was published, but it reads like a creative writing teacher's worst nightmare. The characters have barely a dimension and it reads not so much like the inner workings of a young person's mind, but as though someone very young is trying to imagine how a grown-up would write. Except she looks about 40. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I really enjoyed this - it was a bit like One Day by David Nicholls but with a group of friends rather than a couple. They were likeable, funny, annoying and sweet - just like real people! I found myself rooting for them all to grow up happy

Amandajoy One Day is a favorite of mine so I'll be checking this one out! 7y

Four best friends graduating college... how many times have we read that? This one a bit more engaging with some deft plot twists aided by the chapters jump forward in time a bit, so when you might be tiring of Eva or Benedict--poof! A year has passed. A bit soft at the end.

I didn't think I would like this novel at first. Friendship, love and life? Yuck! But I couldn't help but see myself in the characters. And the pacing of the story was great. She captured the all too real, blink of an eye passage of youth, and how the consequences of certain decisions can reverberate long after. 4/5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book on a few levels; it's set in England, it's a grown up coming of age novel and it reminded me of One Day by David Nichols ( which I loved and was just saying I wish I could read again for the first time)

Septimus is entranced by Hulu 😂😻(it's been 10 minutes, an eternity in kitty time!)

GlitteryOtters This was my husky when we introduced her to TV (a movie version of the book Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild, actually!). Totally glued to it. She had never seen TV before (she used to be a professional racing sled dog & hadn't been indoors much), but she KNEW kids and could hear their voices and see them on the screen...she was CERTAIN she'd find her way over to them somehow! 😂😂 8y

MicheleinPhilly We had a foster pup who was OBSESSED with the tv. She would try to eat the food that was on the screen and would try to look for the actors behind the tv when they walked off screen. 😂 8y
Mimi28 Lol! What show is that? My cats love BabyTv especially at night ( so do I ) Ozzie looked like he had achieved pure enlightenment when he heard Joel Osteen's voice this morning. He was laying with his paws under him with eyes closed and he was smiling 😻 8y
Bookzombie Is that The Real O'Neals? 💕🐱 8y

Maybe it's the ultimate rom com narrative, maybe it's best for 20-somethings who don't have their life together, I can see why people didn't enjoy this book but I really loved it. It was serene and easy and peaceful and domestic. And boy do I love British wit. This is a great summer beach read, in my opinion!

I made my way through this one quickly, but it read like an amalgam of other books and rom-coms and jokes I've seen on Facebook. One thread does a good job with the effects of alcohol on lives. It was easy to get through and finish but the ending is saccharine.

L_auren Same thoughts here 8y
Linds @L_auren did you read One Day? It reminded me a lot of that. 8y

Solid coming of age story involving four friends across a 20 year span. Different chapters focus of different characters, but always in 3rd person. Alas, what would have been brilliant in my 20s, seems obvious in my 40s - which I guess is the point.

Some nice quotes; but all-in-all a bit too contrived for my taste. It's a decent coming-of-age for millennials, but looking through older eyes it's all quite obvious. 3/5

Invincible Summer was not a good read for me. The book held my interest for a little bit in the beginning, but I was bored out of my mind by the 20% mark. The story is written in third person point of view and the was told by four points of view.
