Little, Big
Little, Big | John Crowley
Little, Big tells the epic story of Smoky Barnable -- an anonymous young man who meets and falls in love with Daily Alice Drinkwater, and goes to live with her in Edgewood, a place not found on any map. In an impossible mansion full of her relatives, who all seem to have ties to another world not far away, Smoky fathers a family and tries to learn what tale he has found himself in -- and how it is to end.

LoverofLit Good as Gone was really great. And interesting setup for telling the story following two storylines. One from present forward and one from present backwards, and they eventually come together to answer the questions you're asking the whole book. 2mo
RamsFan1963 One of my all time favorite books!! 2mo
rubyslippersreads Dorothy Must Die was okay (I enjoyed the “Easter eggs” for fans of the movie and books). 2mo
Paula3 I've read the Cousins O'Dwyer Series and this is the 2nd book in the trilogy. Good series 2mo

Little, Big is the multi-generational story of a family caught up in a mysterious magical world that they scarcely understand. The ending is worth the wild ride.

So, uh, for the third month in a row I made zero progress on my #tbrbingo.

Next month is December, though, meaning Christmas holiday reading binge. I can do this! #12hppofxmas

I know this is a fantasy classic, but it is a tad too messy for me. To be perfectly honest, some of the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on.🤨The family parts are wonderful, though. 💜 The audio is unfortunately read by the author and, as much as I get why you‘d want to, I wish authors would understand that they are not actors and are actually doing their story a disservice. Starts off mumbling and gets only slightly better at the end.

❤️ The further in you go, the bigger it gets.

VioletBramble Welcome to Litsy! As you can probably tell by my user name, this is one of my favorite books. 8mo
LitterRat Thanks, V. Indeed, I got the name reference and figured, yeh, another die-hard fan like me. Not everyone gets it; they say, “faeries?..” and do an eye roll, even some fantasy readers with whom I‘ve tried to share. Perhaps the non-fans have been wearing mink coats...and thereby, you know, “..taking on the propensities of the animal.” ?I can‘t explain how well the story works, which is probably the sign of any good yarn. 8mo

My #colorcollage choice was deeply inspired by my morning coffee (as are many things in my life ☕️).

The tagged book is a #chunkster that‘s been sitting on my TBR shelf forever!

The shoes are stupidly expensive so they‘ll remain a wishlist item for longer than that book will be sitting on my TBR, I imagine. 😉 They‘re from the Etsy shop Faerysteps.

The toy is Moxie‘s, made by fishcakes.net

Thanks for a fun prompt, @JoScho!

Stacy_31 Love your tat! It looks like Max‘s crown from Where the Wild Things Are. 12mo

monalyisha @Suzze What a good thing to know! Thanks for sharing the knowledge! I just might have to eat some lasagna to celebrate. 😻 12mo
Stacy_31 @monalyisha I love it even more now. Very cool. 👹👑❤️ 12mo
monalyisha @Stacy_31 Thanks! It‘s actually a mother/daughter tattoo. We both got crowns (because we/girls “rule” 😉). I obviously went with a literary design. I‘m thinking of adding a few words below it, from a Mary Oliver poem. The poem is “The Summer Day.” The words are “one”, “wild”, & “precious.” The idea is that it‘d be my “wild wrist.” 😅 (edited) 12mo

“She had always lived her best life in dreams. She knew no greater pleasure than that moment of passage into the other place, when her limbs grew warm and heavy and the sparkling darkness behind her lids became ordered and doors opened; when conscious thought grew owl's wings and talons and became other than conscious.”

There is a little girl called Lilac in this novel who is stolen by the fairies and sleeps for 25 years. Now that‘s some sleep!
This is a huge labyrinthine novel, beautifully written but at times I was quite lost. Probably the fairies at work again! And the amazing parts made up for that anyway 😊If you loved the fairy parts of Jonathan Strange this could be just what you need.

Cinfhen So I'm definitely taking a pass 😘😘😉😂 2y

Day19 #riotgrams #opposites. The vastest point, the center, the infinity - Faery, where the gigantic heroes ride across endless landscapes and sail sea upon sea and there is no end to possibility - that circle is so tiny it has no doors at all. - Little,Big. This is one of my favorite, non-series, fantasy novels. I love it so much I took my user name, VioletBramble, from one of its characters.

rwmg I thought the name was familiar ☺ 2y

G'night folks. #aQuoteaDay

TobeyTheScavengerMonk The cover of my copy is so somber and sepia toned. This one I found online is soooo trippy. It makes it look like this quiet fairy tale is all about Daily Alice and Smokey Barnable just lounging around dropping acid. 2y

Around a year later and I'm starting to read "Little, Big" by John Crowley. Bought it as an ebook after being nearly impossible to find! Last year I read "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" - which I LOVE - and I saw some comparisons made to "Little, Big".
