In this remarkable debut novel, a boys bittersweet passage to maturity and sexual awakening is set against escalating political tensions in Sri Lanka, during the seven years leading up to the 1983 riots. Arjie Chelvaratnam is a Tamil boy growing up in an extended family in Colombo. It is through his eyes that the story unfolds and we meet a delightful, sometimes eccentric cast of characters. Arjies journey from the luminous simplicity of childhood days into the more intricately shaded world of adults with its secrets, its injustices, and its capacity for violence is a memorable one, as time and time again the true longings of the human heart are held against the way things are.

Enjoying this one so much more than I anticipated.

Lindy It‘s been a long time, but I remember loving this when I read it. I‘ve gone on to read several more by Selvadurai since then. 💜 3mo
SoniaC @Lindy I am just loving it. Would you recommend any of the others? 3mo
Lindy @SoniaC This debut is actually my favourite. Cinnamon Gardens and Swimming in the Monsoon Sea are both okay, quieter than this one. I felt challenged by the honest anger in 3mo

Mehso-so

Disappointing. It felt like the author had certain events he wanted to include, but forgot to think about how to convey the emotion behind these events (the dialogue particularly was not realistic to me) or how to link the events together in a convincing narrative. Too bad.

This is almost entirely #blameitonlitsy with a side of netgalley (Moxie). I don't even know what to pick first. Thoughts from the Litsy hive mind?

WanderingBookaneer I'm finishing All the Dirty Parts. You can read it in one sitting. 2y

I woke up at 550 this morning - guess I forgot to tell my body clock that it's a public holiday today. Oh well might as well get a jump on my reading today!

IamIamIam Lol, my husband's alarm goes off at 5am and thankfully he remembered to shut it off! Enjoy your holiday! 2y

I really should have started this series from the beginning. However, this was fine as a stand alone. It does try to keep up with many characters lives which sometimes got confusing. All in all a good read.

Bostonmomx2 It's an excellent, excellent series! I really recommend going back and starting with #1. 😊 2y
AmandaRae @Bostonmomx2 I have since been on a mission to obtain all the books in this series. I finally got #1 and will be starting it shortly lol 2y

My book was making me want to eat South Asian food. Unfortunately I've not come across a Sri Lankan eatery in my town so this Indian-Pakistani meal would have to do.

LeahBergen Yum! 2y

Smarkies Have you had Sri Lankan food before? It is similar to South Indian but has a few differences as well. 2y

The husband is with the kids working on a Lego boat so it's time for me to lounge on the sofa and read this wonderful book. I would sit in our backyard if it wasn't such a mess. The painters power washed the exterior yesterday and are returning on Monday (yes even though it's a holiday!) to start work.

vivastory This sounds great. Stacked! 2y

BekahB I love this book! I recently bought a new copy after loaning mine out years ago. I'm planning on re-reading it this year. 😀 2y
Lindy @shawnmooney @BekahB Remembering how good this is... might have to rescue my copy from its current position in a giveaway stack. 2y
shawnmooney @Lindy Wasn't it just? The original post reminded me I have yet to read any of his other books. Would you recommend any of those? I heard the second one was so-so, but I would reserve the right to make up my own mind; I also heard the third one was really great. 2y
shawnmooney @LeahBergen @batsy @Lindy In the 1990s, I once happened upon him walking to a Harbourfront literary reading that he was performing at and that I was attending, in Toronto. We had a lovely conversation for several blocks, but unfortunately he did not flirt with me at all! 😢😢 2y
Lindy @shawnmooney I liked Cinnamon Gardens and Swimming in the Monsoon Sea better than Hungry Ghosts, but I appreciated how that last one addressed a difficult topic: racism in Canada. 2y
batsy @shawnmooney @Lindy @LeahBergen How nice! He strikes me as being lovely and polite and shy, so maybe that's why 😉 I attended one of his readings in Winnipeg and was too intimidated to go up and speak to him, tried to disappear into the library shelves 😂 2y
Lindy @batsy I'm usually intimidated by speaking to authors also. I can barely put two words together when I get my books signed. 2y
shawnmooney @batsy Oh wow! If it's not too personal a question, how did you end up in Winnipeg – did you live there for a time or…? 2y
batsy @Lindy I'm so glad I'm not alone! 2y
batsy @shawnmooney No not at all. It's a long story but I went to university there and lived there for some years. Was supposed to head to the US but 9/11 happened and visas were hell. So U of W were doing a recruiting drive locally through the Canadian embassy, and I thought, I'm ready to get out of Malaysia and the freezing cold prairies will do. 😂 It was a shock to the system in many ways but I ended up loving my time there... 2y
Bengali.bookworm This is one of my favorites! 2y
LeahBergen Oh my - from Malaysia to Winnipeg. Now that WOULD be a shock to the system! 😮 @batsy (edited) 2y
LeahBergen @batsy @Lindy I NEVER think of anything clever to say when I meet authors at signings. I think I probably just smile creepily! 😂 2y
shawnmooney @batsy Wow, that's so interesting! You may have already seen me mention that I grew up in neighboring Saskatchewan. Those windy icy winters must've indeed been a challenge! 2y
batsy @shawnmooney Yes, they were. I regret not visiting Saskatchewan! And @LeahBergen I though I could pretend I was Laura Ingalls but it's better to brave harsh winters in books, as opposed to in real life 😂 2y

#POCreads for #somethingforsept. Funny Boy is a great, and underhyped, novel about a young boy coming-of-age and coming out in 1980s Sri Lanka. Check it out.

ReadingEnvy I read The Icarus Girl earlier this year and would like to read more by her. 3y
BekahB I loved Funny Boy! I need to read more by the author. 3y

shawnmooney Funny Boy! I loved that novel so much, and probably already shared with you my little fan-gay anecdote about walking down the street with the author on the way to his reading 20 or more years ago in Toronto... :) 3y
LeahBergen Did you, @shawnmooney ?? That's awesome! I've been to hear him read twice now and he's lovely. 😀 3y
Dragon Remains of the Day is a great read by one of my favourite writers 3y
