When Captain Kel Cheris of the hexarchate is disgraced for her unconventional tactics, Kel Command gives her a chance to redeem herself, by retaking the Fortress of Scattered Needles from the heretics. Cheriss career isnt the only thing at stake: if the fortress falls, the hexarchate itself might be next. Cheriss best hope is to ally with the undead tactician Shuos Jedao. The good news is that Jedao has never lost a battle, and he may be the only one who can figure out how to successfully besiege the fortress. The bad news is that Jedao went mad in his first life and massacred two armies, one of them his own. As the siege wears on, Cheris must decide how far she can trust Jedaobecause she might be his next victim.

I, for one, welcome our petty robot overlords.

Context, the number is the robot's "name" here and it's insulting the canister (also partly robotic) in question.

Reread finished! Again, I chose to view the math as magic and things fell into place when viewed that way. Love that Jedao has dyscalculia. Love the moment Cheris cuts off the fingers of her gloves. Love -- well, most of it, really.

Which is probably why my new ereader rejoices in the name "Immolation Fox".

I was going to cuddle with Breakfast to read some more, but he was busy grooming himself, so Biscuit filled in. ? #BunniesofLitsy

Just very much enjoyed the little touch of Jedao having to explain the very concept of democracy to Cheris. Such a solid "whoa right we are definitely not in Kansas anymore" moment.

So, Squidapus actually read the second two books over the course of five days but I couldn't write the reviews up for him cause a bad case of strep kept me on my back for like 2 weeks. You'd think that'd give me lots of reading time but ha ha ha ha you'd be wrong. But we're back and ready for more books!

Well, Squidapus sure blazed through this in 3 days. A very excellent sci fi novel with a unique universe and (confusing) technology system that really lets them get creative almost to the point of space magic. The hexarch's rigid calendar system is a great backdrop for an unsettling space empire where everyone has their place and every "caste" is defined entirely by their group. A little dense with nonsense terms to start which can be confusing.

And a footnote: In an emergency, if the general withholds necessary information, the carrion glass remnants can be ingested by a volunteer. Although this procedure is experimental, this will give the general a body, so he can be tortured.”

I was told before I tried this that it was a bit confusing. And to be honest, it was mega confusing in parts. But such compelling reading. Cannot wait for the next in the trilogy. Mathematical sci-fi, who'd have thunk it!

suzisteffen @wtimblin There‘s one (maybe two?) Yoon Ha Lee short story online that does a great job of explaining calendrical rot better than the first book in the trilogy. That said, I ADORE these books. Hope you like the next two! 10mo

I almost returned NINEFOX GAMBIT unlistened-to when I realized it was read by Emily Woo Zeller, my least favourite narrator. I'm glad I resisted the urge; her performance was excellent, and kept me engaged in a book I'd likely have drifted away from in print.

NINEFOX GAMBIT is cool, with style to spare, but it's distant and idea-driven--until the very end, when Jedao's backstory brings the whole thing together. Now I want the sequel, please.

xicanti Further to my issues with Emily Woo Zeller: I've previously found her one-note and incapable of keeping her volume consistent. This time around, she imbued the story with plenty of personality and only dropped to near-inaudible levels a couple of times. I think the latter issue was likely dealt with by a good producer, in this case. 10mo
silentrequiem That's interesting. I also have issues with her. When she took over narrating the Mary Roach books, I had to listen to them sped up to stand it. Maybe I'll check this one out since I've had trouble getting into the print book. Thanks! 10mo
xicanti @silentrequiem I always listen to audiobooks at 2x so I can't speak to that part of her performance, but the volume shifts in THE LEAVERS bothered me so, so much. I either strained to hear her or rushed to turn the volume down because she was SCREAMING AT ME. It was beyond frustrating. 10mo

I don‘t think I was smart enough for this book. I only understood the gist of this book. All the names were a little confusing, so I mixed some of them up. I was in the mood for a sci-fi, which I don‘t have a lot of experience in, but this wasn‘t a sci-fi for me.

Happy Saturday, folks! I hope you're all enjoying your weekends. Today's quote comes from my first book of 2019 - Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. I'm really torn on this one. I thought the concept was really cool, and I found the characters and the political intrigue fascinating but... there was a lot of it that I just didn't get.

imyril The world building is so opaque especially at the beginning! It just swarms over you - but I loved these books in the end. 10mo

I wasn‘t sold on this book until the last few chapters. The complex political machinations are intriguing but there‘s not really enough info given for the reader to parse character motivations. The ending made me want to hear the rest of the story but that may be the problem; the whole book feels like a set up.

I would not consider this hard science fiction, I'd call it hard science fantasy. The basis of the science or technology is not grounded in ...anything. Using mathematic terminology mashed with made up words sounds/reads cool but without any context, it comes off little more than fantastical babbling.

A try before you buy (the library saved me).

Absolutely awesome SF. Top notch world building and perfect pacing. An amazing new voice that dives deep into the human condition without falling into the typical political rhetoric of much modern military SF. Think Hari Seldon meets Bolos.

Difficult to get into for the first fifty pages or so, this one really repays the effort! The world-building revolves around calendar systems and their attendant mathematics. Layered on this are the politics, backstabbing, and maneuvering. While this is a very different world, protoganist, and story, the creativity and political intrigue remind me of Ann Leckie.

I can't wait to pick up the next book - once my brain recovers a bit!

Read because it was nominated for the 2017 Hugo, Locus, and Clarke awards.

Very suspenseful and fast paced with interesting world building that's introduced at the right speed so it's never overly confusing or draggy. Liked that it acknowledged the space battles' human cost and moral issues, but it doesn't go much farther than acknowledgment, preferring to focus on the action and intrigue.

Sue I love this series! I‘m eagerly awaiting book 3.... 2y

So I whipped together this fancast for Ninefox Gambit because I love Cheris and have a serious (and maybe really weird) crush on Jedao and yes, okay, Kujen. I know I know it's very weird because of what those two are but intelligence, competence, and confidence are things I find attractive okay? The hormones want what they want no matter what the brain says (though the brain has quite a significant amount of say in this too, so yeah).
