so-soI was quite underwhelmed by this book. The writing and pacing wasn't very good and there was a bit too much pop culture reference for me (but that could be because I'm old!)
The representation was great and this would probably appeal to a younger audience

Is a cute audiobook about a teenage girl in Austraila who decides to wear the hijab. Usually avoid a teenage drama stories but I was curious about this one because my boyfriend is from Saudi Arabia so his sisters wear the hijab. People's reactions can be so negative. Don't think I'd be brave enough to wear a hijab. This was cute and interesting but the ending left me just meh. 🌟🌟🌟

so-soI have mixed feelings about this one. I‘m glad this book exists, that there are books where the Muslim protagonist isn‘t fleeing an abusive relationship or oppressed by her family. But the execution could have been better. Some parts were amazing and beautiful and funny, but a lot of the book just dragged. A big “meh” from me.

It's a funny YA read, which many can relate to, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. It shows the diversity even within the Muslim communities. pickI love how Randa Abdel-Fattah took what is a tough topic and made it a fun yet insightful read. I tend not to read YA but I‘m so thoroughly thrilled with this book. It was so real and down to earth, and filled with such fantastic characters.

so-soAlthough I didn't personally enjoy this book much (I think plot/character/writing need major work) I acknowledge this def has teen appeal as a Muslim girl version of the fluffy straight girl stuff that abounds in #YA. It's quite pedantic, a bit after-school special, with plenty of educational moments which might be useful for some readers but for me fell flat and took away from the characters feeling like real people. #MuslimShelfSpace

Did some work in the peace and quiet of my local library today, and was super excited to see these #LoveOzYA posters up in the Youth area! So awesome! 😁 I tagged Randa Abdel-Fattah's 'Does My Head Look Big In This?' because I vividly remember reading it during school lunches when I was 14 or 15 - it was probably the first book I read with a hijabi MC

Chose this book for a book club I'm doing at a school and they are really enjoying it! So glad this book exists as it's still such an important read for Muslim Teenagers (but also everyone else). I read this 10yrs ago and it's still funny today. It has its flaws, but it helps to 'normalise' Muslims and it's relatable for many hijabis. So glad the students like it and find it relevant to their lives! #diversebooks 👍🏽
bailedSo...I'm trying to give myself permission to not finish books. I desperately wanted to like this one but just felt every interaction was preachy and fake teenager-y. Maybe I'm just too old?
