Audible does definitely have a good strategy: They get you hooked up with free audiobooks, but sometimes I am not able to finish them till the due date. Of corse now I will buy it. 🙈😜🙈

Took me a bit to read because of everything happening in life. I definitely enjoyed it & look forward to continuing with this series.

My favorite book in October was City of Bones, a wonderfully inventive and intriguing fantasy from Martha Wells (of Murderbot fame). One of her earlier works it nonetheless displays all the things I like her books for—great characters, snappy dialog, exceptional world building and a story that always entertains and surprises. Reading this makes me want to revisit more of her backlist.

Although the plot is different, the tone of this novel reminds me of Six of Crows. Wells's skill at worldbuilding and creating three-dimensional characters is evident. Occasionally I found the action difficult to follow, especially with some of the more out-there locations, but overall it was an engrossing read.

Excellent. One of the most imaginative, compelling, fascinating fictional worlds I‘ve come across…ever. Academia, relic hunting, thievery, banditry, ghosts, mysterious technology, a knight-like order that isn‘t all that it seems, social stratification, non-humanoid main character, & the fate of the world hanging in the balance…loved every page. Would absolutely read more stories set in this world although I don‘t expect we‘ll see them. Fantastic.

First published in 1995, this book went out of print & the rights eventually returned to Wells at which time she republished it as a print-on-demand book. Fast forward to the massive success of Murderbot & once again a publisher picks up this book for which I‘m very thankful. I started it yesterday & this “post-magical-apocalypse-ecological-disaster…fantasy on the edge of science fiction” is impossible to put down. Wells knows how to tell a story.

Martha Wells is an incredible writer.

Book 5 for #wyrdandwonder24

I originally started this in audio but since I haven't mastered the art of comprehension at higher than 1x speed I switched to eBook because I was impatient to find out what would happen next and eye reading is always faster to me. I liked this world with an apocalyptical wasteland whose now generationally removed survivors have built an economy on learning about the past. Totally worth the time investment.

Best part of a recent conversation was the fantasy-centric wives' book club trying to help the more cerebral husbands' book club figure out which City of Bones book they were wanting to read. All the gals were like, "Uhhh we have copies of the Cassandra Clare one if you want to borrow them but we're pretty sure that's not what you're talking about..." I'm super intrigued by the Martha Wells one now!
