Royal We | Jessica Morgan
The "Washington Pos"t and "USA Today" Bestseller""I might be Cinderella today, but I dread who they'll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next."" American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it's Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain's future king. And when Bex can't resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face. Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become. Which is how she gets into trouble. Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she's sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

I had heard so much about this - and most of it positive. But it was such a let down for me. Everyone is horrid. You never really get a sense of why Bex and Nick are a good couple - or why she thinks it‘s worth it. And so many terrible decisions. Not a person you‘re rooting for among them. Sigh.

This book starts good and builds to an insane finale that I could not put down. It's very clearly inspired by Will and Kate, and the British royal family. It's another very fun royal romance.

I‘m planning to celebrate further with yoga, bubble bath, and then pedicures with my mom (so really just a regular Sunday). Hope all the other moms have equally lovely, chill plans. ❤️🥰

This one was so fun and just hit the spot. I didn‘t want to put it down. It‘s a novel loosely based on Kate and William‘s royal relationship. It‘s definitely fiction, but it‘s a lot of fun. Bex and Nick meet at Oxford. Despite his royal status and the fact that she‘s an American, they fall in love. Their siblings, Freddie and Lacey, and his responsibilities cause some major road blocks for the couple. A great light read.

Reagan-reads There is a sequel coming out 😍 3mo

This was really hard...I‘m kinda inbetween Pick and So-So. It was glorified Will and Kate fanfiction...which don‘t get me wrong, I love them. But this was just fluff, and it didn‘t really pull me in...until the last 100 pages or so. All in all it was a big Royal Meh

This book was the cutest! An American student meets a prince (meet-cute 🚨) and they fall in love. It was a little predictable but completely worth it, just adorable. I will say that when I picked this up from the library, the page count threw me a bit, and I questioned how badly I wanted to read it. Yes, it‘s long but it doesn‘t drag at all. Plus, there‘s a sequel coming out next year! Maybe 🍼? This was an excellent guilty pleasure read.

I can't believe we're at the end of the #RoyalRead! It's been so fun to revisit this book and delve into some of the real-life inspiration behind it. Questions below! @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @MellieAntoinete

ferskner Question 1: Were you surprised by Clive's betrayal? Did you understand his bitterness toward Nick? 8mo
ferskner Question 2: Did you feel any sympathy for Lacey by the end of the book? Were her actions unforgivable? 8mo
ferskner Question 3: If you were Nick, could you have forgiven Bex? Do you agree with his choices? 8mo
See All 12 Comments
ferskner Question 4: What do you think Nick and Freddie's relationship will be like after the kiss with Bex? 8mo
ferskner Question 5: How did you feel about Nick and Bex's decision to marry to thwart Clive's plan? 8mo
ferskner Question 6: What do you think happens after the impromptu wedding?!!? What does the future hold for Nick and Bex? 8mo
Librarybelle 1. In some ways, I wasn‘t surprised. Clive always seemed to be so suave and kind of nonchalant about his connections with the royal family...and yet, he was a reporter looking for “the big scoop.” He played off being castoff by Bex for Nick too well - sure, he was mad, but it almost seemed like he “forgave” too easily. 8mo
Librarybelle 2. I think I‘m still a little too upset with Lacey! Sure, she does deserve forgiveness. I think Bex handled the whole situation well, but she must have felt such a betrayal! 8mo
Librarybelle 3. Like Nick, I would have hoped to be told about what happened without hearing about it through someone else. But, to jump to wrong conclusions. And the kissing incidences happened during rough times for Bex and Nick. Freddie announcing his love would be a little bit harder to swallow, in my opinion. But, I don‘t think Bex deserved the cold shoulder or the inability to initially talk about it. 8mo
Librarybelle 4. I think it will be a little strained - it has to be. But, they‘re also so close. I would hope that Nick and Freddie can work through everything. They need each other. 8mo
Librarybelle 5. I thought it was such a spontaneous and fun idea! It fits with their personalities. It seemed like partly to thwart Clive, but in a way, it‘s like the best possible wedding ceremony for two people and their closest friends. 8mo
Librarybelle 6. I‘m sure there is fallout. I can‘t think that Nick will be forced to give up his claim to the throne. The Queen seems to understand things, in her own way. I would hope nothing serious comes of the whole thing. 8mo

This was such a fun read! It was lighthearted, yet with moments of deep sorrow and pain. I loved the parallels with the British royal family - though written around the time of William and Kate‘s courtship, there are certainly echoes of Harry and Meghan‘s relationship in this book. So glad I had a chance to read this for #RoyalRead . Thanks so much @ferskner ! Thanks too to @CoverToCoverGirl and @MellieAntoinete for joining! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

So. Much. Drama! This section is hard to read since we see Bex losing hold of herself in ways we haven't through the rest of her relationship with Nick. I remember reading opinions that Meghan gave up too much to marry Harry, and that came to mind while reading about everything Bex is forced to abandon. Questions below! @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @MellieAntoinete

ferskner Question 1: Was Bex right to let Nick go on another deployment so soon? How would you have handled that? 8mo
ferskner Question 2: Why do you think Lacey struggles so much to understand the position Bex is in? 8mo
ferskner Question 3: Freddie!!!! What was he thinking?!? How can he and Bex recover from such a huge blunder? 8mo
See All 9 Comments
ferskner This is more of a comment than a question, but I'm super fascinated by the physical transformation that Bex has to undertake. I always wonder how much truth there is to it! What do you think? 8mo
Librarybelle 1. To me, this is Bex‘s first step out of her old life. Not that she was truly selfish before, but she‘s really trying to make sure Nick is happy. She wants him to feel as normal as possible. But, this is bad timing. Very bad timing. I think a longer conversation about it would have been appropriate. 8mo
Librarybelle 2. Lacey has always been the one in the spotlight - the prettier one, the more successful one. She also had a way bigger royal obsession than did Bex. It‘s a change. She struggles with this role reversal. It‘s like she loved the product but didn‘t understand how the product was created. 8mo
Librarybelle 3. Yikes! You just know this is going to get out somehow, some way. I question if he truly feels that way about Bex. Maybe he does, but it‘s such poor timing. It‘s like a rom-com, which I love! Nice little plot twist. I haven‘t started Part 5 yet, so I‘m crossing fingers everything works out! 8mo
Librarybelle 4. I bet there is some truth to that! I‘m not sure if it goes to all of the lengths described, but we do know Meghan has experienced some major changes. That would be interesting to know... 8mo
MellieAntoinette Love this picture of Wills & Kate! And yes, there‘s a long section where both Nick & Bex kind of fall apart. 8mo

Part 3! One of the reasons I love this book is because I'm super jealous of Bex's life. Not the marrying a prince part, but that she's able to settle in London and really make a life for herself, and even work in an amazing museum. I've only been to London once, but it was totally addicting. This book makes me a little sad since I'll never get that life, but I can dream through Bex. Questions below! #RoyalRead @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl

ferskner Question 1: Do you agree with Bex post-breakup coping skills? How would you have handled public heartbreak in her situation? 9mo
ferskner Question 2: How do you feel about Bex's friend group? Who's your favorite? 9mo
ferskner Question 3: Oh my gosh, Bex and Freddie kiss!!!! Why do you think this happened? Have you ever wondered if Harry had a crush on Kate? 9mo
See All 12 Comments
ferskner Question 4: Bex and Nick get engaged after a very short time back together. What obstacles to do you think still exist in their relationship? 9mo
ferskner Question 5: Did you cry at the proposal? 9mo
Librarybelle 1. Losing yourself in destructive behavior is never good, but everyone reacts differently to a big breakup. I‘ve never had a public breakup, so I don‘t know all of the pressure involved in that. I can‘t imagine going down the path Bex did - though I‘m not a party person to begin with, so I‘m very different from Bex. After a hard breakup, we all develop some sort of coping mechanism that isn‘t the healthiest; it depends upon our personalities?? 9mo
Librarybelle 2. I think her friend group tries to be supportive. In a way, they‘re a little cliched with every other romance-y, chick lit-y book, but I don‘t mind that! Gaz is probably my favorite...I chuckle anytime he does something. I‘d love a buddy like that! 9mo
Librarybelle 3. I felt like the kids just happened. They got caught in the moment, seeing everyone else making out in secluded places. Not sure how much of an attraction piece there was, though clearly they both were thinking of the other siblings. I can‘t see Harry having a crush on Kate, but who knows??? Haha! 9mo
Librarybelle 4. This time, things seem more structured, in that Nick is prepared to go the distance, introducing Bex to his mom for instance. But, there‘s still the press and the royal family and the horror (!) of an American potentially sitting on the throne. So, many obstacles still! 9mo
Librarybelle 5. Maybe a little, but I really cried at the death of Mr Porter! Oh my, so unexpected and so sad! I‘m actually tearing up now thinking of it. But, as to the proposal, I love that the first ring came from a Cracker Jack box! 9mo
ferskner @Librarybelle I forgot to answer my own questions! 1. I agree - I'm not a partier so it's hard to know how I'd react, but I can see trying to put a positive spin on my life if I had to break up publicly. 2. I'm also a Gaz fan! It's hard not to be. 3. So: at the William and Kate wedding, there is a look Harry gives Kate at the altar that is INTENSE. I've wondered so many times! 4. I think it was good they spent time apart... 8mo
ferskner @Librarybelle ...and I think Nick in particular needed to sort a lot out for himself. Both in terms of the reality of what was expected from him vs. his own desires and in what was reasonable to expect from a partner. I don't think he'd considered much realistically when he started the relationship. 5. That is so interesting! I realized I rarely cry at sad stuff - usually sweet moments. Weird! 8mo

Story wise, The Royal We is by far the most transparent, cheesy adventure unfolding on the page in the most expected of terms. Even the names are dripping with royalist sentimentality (King Richard Lyons à la Richard the Lionheart, House of Lyons-Bowes (shortened of course to the House of Lyons at some point in 'history') a throwback to Elizabeth Bowes Lyons, the Queen Mum).

"To be a king and where a crown is a thing more glorious to them that see it, than it is pleasant to them that bear it." HRH Queen Elizabeth I (1601)

Yeah, this book is not that serious! It doesn't aspire to anything higher than a fun, fictionalized ideal of what it must be like to date royalty. Hence, the great quote I couldn't resist!

I'm sooooooo late posting! Too much has been going on this week.

Part Two: this is when things start to get interesting! Somehow Wills and Kate's post-college relationship is the most fascinating to me, when everyone knew they were together but they weren't "officially" together. I lived the books' take on how that would actually feel! Questions in the comments. #RoyalRead @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl

ferskner Question 1: How did you feel about Lacey's decisions in this section? Was Nick justified in his frustration at her behavior? Was it fair to blame Bex for it?
Question 2: Were you surprised by the truth of Nick and Freddie's mother Emma? Did you think this was a good play on what happened to Diana?
9mo
ferskner Question 3: Did you sympathize with Nick in the breakup, or did he act unreasonably toward Bex?
Question 4: What do you think of Freddie? Do you think Pippa and Harry ever tried to date?
9mo
Librarybelle I‘m not a fan of Lacey. I don‘t think she has Bex best interest‘s at heart. She knows she‘s pretty, and she flaunts it. I would say Nick was justified at his frustration, but not at taking it out on Bex. He can‘t control Freddie, so why should Bex be able to control Lacey? 9mo
See All 15 Comments
Librarybelle I was a little surprised how the authors unveiled what really happened with Nick‘s mom. But, having her die tragically would make it too much like a similarity to Diana. Since this is all thinly veiled caricatures of the real royal family, that would have been a little too close to home, in my opinion! Question for the group: do you think Charles IRL is as cold as Richard is? (edited) 9mo
Librarybelle I really disliked Nick by the end of this section. I get the whole throwing the paparazzi off the scent by being seen with other women, but what he did was cold. Though, I don‘t know how I would respond in that situation, so maybe I‘m off base. But, no, I did not sympathize with him. 9mo
Librarybelle Freddie and Harry could almost be twins! He‘s comic relief. I have no idea if Pippa and Harry ever tried to get together. That would have been interesting! 9mo
ferskner @Librarybelle I have read that William and Harry have a good relationship with Charles, so I hope he's not like Richard! I actually have a lot of sympathy for Charles. He wasn't allowed to marry the woman he wanted to because of his parents' expectations, and then was paired with someone who was such an epic mismatch for him that it was doomed from the start. I hate cheating, of course, but it seems like so much sadness could have been averted. 9mo
ferskner @Librarybelle I don't think Pippa and Harry really dated, but there sure was speculation! It's interesting that they have remained friends (attended each others' weddings, have been seen in public together). I find the connection between the Royal Family and the Middletons really fascinating. So many of the rules of royal pairings have changed in the last 20 years! 9mo
Librarybelle @ferskner Did you read the new biography on Charles? A library staff member told me I had to read it, as it was unbiased. I got a copy through Book Outlet awhile ago... 9mo
Librarybelle @ferskner The rules have changed! I can‘t imagine what Victoria would think if she saw this! But, I‘m personally glad to see the changes. The royals are human too, and they deserve to be happy. 9mo
ferskner @Librarybelle I haven't read that! I'd definitely be interested. I think it must still be hard for Elizabeth to have seen the rules change so much during her lifetime! Now that the monarchy doesn't actually govern and no one believes in the divine right of kings anymore, it seems ridiculous to say that they have to marry within a certain small group of people. Can you imagine if countries still tried to build alliances through marriage? 9mo
Librarybelle I know, @ferskner ! They were already marrying cousins to a degree...it would get even more complicated! It must be really hard for Elizabeth, or at least really eye opening. I would love to hear what she personally thinks of all of the changes she has seen in her lifetime, both for the monarchy and the whole world. A candid interview, where she discusses everything. What a gold mine of knowledge and insight she must have! It won‘t happen, but... 9mo
CoverToCoverGirl @Librarybelle @ferskner I‘m late but after reading all of your comments I mostly agree with you both on all points. I did actively dislike Nick‘s behaviour and had zero sympathy for him.. however I wouldn‘t want to be a royal and live in the fish bowl they live in. I‘d love it if Queen Elizabeth would do a tell all interview, it would be riveting! I love Freddie, l‘d love it if she wrote his story--I‘d read it for sure, would you ladies read it? (edited) 9mo
ferskner @CoverToCoverGirl @Librarybelle YES. Especially now that the prince marrying an American thing came true!!!! I love that The Royal We seemed to predict that, and when the wedding was happening last May I wanted to reread this so badly. 9mo
Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @ferskner I would read a Freddie story! 9mo

I needed a light and fun read as I start preparing for my colonoscopy on Wednesday so I picked this one that‘s been on my tbr shelves forever. I don‘t know if I‘ll join in with the buddy read or not since it‘s surprisingly hard to read when you‘re hangry. 😝

Cinfhen The prep is soooooo much worse than the test!! Hoping you do well💚 9mo
AutumnRLS As a colon cancer survivor, I'm happy you're doing this. Colonoscopies are the best prevention! 9mo
BookNAround @Cinfhen This is my second one in five years so at least I know to expect I‘ll be a cranky bugger until it‘s over. 😂 I‘m also less than pleased that a friend tells me many doctors are only recommending a 3 year reprieve now for those of us with bad genes. 9mo
BookNAround @AutumnRLS I‘d never skip it given my family history but I will whine about it right up until I get that good anesthesia. 😂😂😂 9mo
AutumnRLS @BookNAround I always say that anesthesia is the best sleep I get all year! This is the first time in 11 years that I've been able to skip some time in between tests. Looking forward to getting to wait three years! :) 9mo

I loved this book! It was so much fun. I just loved the fantasy of it. I think the best part is that the protagonist meeting and falling in love with the prince is only the beginning NOT where the book ends. There are still ups and downs they have to go through. The supporting cast of friends were also great- they were good, bad, messy- all of it. I just really enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. A really fun read.

Finished Part 2 this morning. Wow...what a rollercoaster! #RoyalRead

Librarybelle @ferskner This section really made the royal family sound snobbish. I felt for Bex as she navigated, pretty much on her own, instant fame and truly living in the public. I‘m kind of mad at Nick now. 9mo
CoverToCoverGirl Me too! It‘s like everyone left her to sink or swim - even Nick. This book didn‘t grab me in the first part but the second part was good and I can‘t wait to start part 3! 😊 9mo
Librarybelle I‘m excited to start Part 3 too, @CoverToCoverGirl ! 9mo
ferskner I'm not quite done with the section yet but YES Nick is so frustrating! 9mo

Discussion questions for #RoyalRead:
How are you liking the book so far?
Were you interested the Kate Middleton/William romance already or is this new territory for you?
Do you like how Bex and Nick's relationship begins?
Would an American ever be nicknamed Bex in real life?

@Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl

Librarybelle I‘m enjoying the book so far...it‘s light with just a tad bit of foreshadowing of things to come. I‘m not completely obsessed with the royals (more obsessed with the historic royals), but I‘m intrigued by the William/Kate angle. I did wonder about Bex as a nickname - I could see it as more of an European nickname than American, though I‘m not sure why. 9mo
Librarybelle I thought the beginning of the relationship was interesting. It wasn‘t immediate, which I liked - no hookups in the first weekend like Bex did with Clive. So, it‘s a friendship that morphed into a romance. It makes me wonder if Nick likes her for being different - she‘s not a subject, so she sees him on a different plane. Nick is very sweet. I‘m looking forward to reading the progression of this in Part Two. 9mo
CoverToCoverGirl To be totally honest didn‘t connect with the characters at first but started to by the end of the first part.. I like the Kate / William story and they seem very happy but William‘s mother Diana has always fascinated me and still does. Yes I like how they met. She is who she is and he liked her for it! No, Bex as a name feels very British not American. 9mo
ferskner @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl I think this book made me a fan of the modern royals! I was also only interested in the pre-20th monarchs, but between this and The Crown, I can't get enough of the Windsors right now. I really love how he m they start out as friends and let their guards down before they start anything, and that Thanksgiving scene is just so romantic! I also like that we already know that they're going to get married as we read... 9mo
ferskner @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl ... it's just discovering what the path will be to get there that is interesting. My only complaint is that I think Bex is SUCH a British tabloid nickname! It sounds completely British to me (along with Jules, Wills, etc.). I really love being in the world of this book. It's my second read and I find it endlessly appealing. 9mo

I finished Part One late last night (and was too lazy to get out of bed to post), so I‘m right on schedule for Part Two. Anyone else start yet? This is such a perfect distraction book - kind of gossipy, with lightheartedness and romance - and I‘m enjoying it so far! #RoyalRead

MellieAntoinette 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️ It‘s an adorable book! 9mo
Librarybelle @MellieAntoinete ❤️❤️❤️ 9mo
CoverToCoverGirl Just finished part one. This is not what I was expecting... started out thinking it wasn‘t really for me because I had a hard time connecting with most of the characters especially Bex.. but near the very end of this part I started to like her more. I do quite like Nick though. And the whole Thanksgiving thing made me smile a lot. 😊 9mo

ferskner So I'm a dummy and thought today was the 10th - Veteran's Day vs. Veteran's Day (Observed) screwed me up! Posting some questions right now.... 9mo
Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl I loved the Thanksgiving part too! 9mo
Librarybelle @ferskner Haha! Totally fine! I should have posted some questions too. 9mo

Arrived safely in Houston- and finished my #WeddingWeekend-appropriate read while my hugsband finished some work before heading off to the rehearsal dinner! I really didn‘t expect to love this- but I sure did!!! #Twins (I‘m like 100% sure there‘s an #SVH mini book series with this exact same plot!) and romance and royalty! I laughed - I even cried! Such fun... but I want more!!! Anyone hear rumors of a sequel????
