While I normally find myself drawn to flawed characters and angsty stories, I still am a sucker for a happy ending. I love a good love story, especially when framed around a smart and strong female character... and Darcy, my prototype for a dreamy man.

It would be easy to stick to the romantic sentiments this chapter is built on. A true happily-ever-after moment. However, I had no recollection of this part and it really made me laugh. Mr. Bennet is flawed in so many ways, but his pettiness always makes me laugh.

Elizabeth frets over what will come of her altercation with Lady Catherine last night. Meanwhile, Mr. Bennet is tickled by a letter he gets from Mr. Collins.

In true Mr.Collins fashion he spills all the gossip while managing to be offensive in some way or another. As Lady C‘s #1 fan he naturally warns off a Lizzy/Darcy engagement and Mr. Bennet is disappointed Lizzy won‘t be petty with him like he‘s hoped.

Lady Catherine returns and behaves decidedly unladylike. She comes to intimidate Elizabeth out of ever pursuing Darcy‘s favor, but forgot who she was dealing with.

Elizabeth serves as a savior of her class by commanding the respect she knows she deserves. She once again comes through with the chutzpah we‘ve come to expect and love.

Jane and Bingley finally quit blushing and preening for each other and make it official. Elizabeth is glad that Jane has the happy ending she deserves and that she doesn‘t need to know how their initial separation came to be. We get the great line, “till I have your disposition, your goodness, I never can have your happiness.” Reminding me to check my attitude 🤷🏼‍♀️

Taking a study break to post today‘s chapter. I‘ve been out of school a long time, but the feel of this chapter brought me right back.

Jane denying the extent of her feelings for Bingley, getting mad nobody believes her. Like the time in 3rd grade when my brother told the boy I was in love with about my crush and I was like, “wow he‘s lying” 😂

Bingley is back in town, Darcy in awkward tow. Jane has to play it cool again. Unfortunately, nobody is cool in this situation. There‘s a lot of silence and staring. Mrs. Bennet is the only one with something to say, as per usual. As Bingley leaves we get a look in to what it would look like if Jane were capable of a negative emotion - displaying deep frustration with Bingley‘s lack of attention and action.

I‘ll do enough swooning over Darcy at the back end of this book so I won‘t dwell on how Darcy‘s stock goes up in Lizzy‘s eyes this chapter. Rather, let‘s put a spotlight on how Lizzy “infers” what a shit Wickham is right to his face. She draws a line in the sand about what their relationship will be and what her read on him is. The Wickham‘s have returned to Longbourn and are already annoying the Bennets. Lydia disregards the shame she has brought upon her family and comes through with an air of superiority we all saw coming. Lydia drops the bombshell that Darcy was at her wedding 🤭🤫

Mr. Bennet reflects in this chapter. You get to see him as truly human for probably the first time in the story. He admits to himself the failings he has had as a father, husband and provider. He‘s contemplating how if he had made different choices in his life and with his family, the scenario with Mr. Wickham may have been avoided.

The Bennet family is still trying to find Lydia and is understandably upset. As anyone could have predicted, Mr.Collins provides a demoralizing reminder of their troubles posed as support. He suggests it would be better news to find out Lydia had died rather than run off unmarried with a man. Sigh.

Elizabeth returns home and begins to see the chaos descend from Lydia‘s actions. They all discuss the implications of the situation and how it has impacted all of them. They are left wondering how this could have happened, if Wickham could really be this bad and if there will be any chance of making the best out of a bad situation.

Lizzy finds out that Lydia has pulled a Lydia and Wickham has pulled a Wickham. She‘s feeling unbelievably guilty, thinking if she‘d just exposed Wickham‘s character none of this would be happening. She‘s upset and rushed to get back to her family when she gets a visit from Darcy. He is equally disheartened by her condition and we‘re reminded of the panic he must have felt when his sister went through this.

The Fitzwilliam Darcy redemption tour continues. We are reunited with Bingley and finally get to meet Miss Darcy. Elizabeth is like, “ So you‘re telling me he‘s super generous, a good friend AND a good brother 🙄.” Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner are seemingly confused by what a good guy Darcy is. Hadn‘t they heard how disagreeable he is?

Got home early this morning and will likely spend most of my time today unpacking and doing some planning for an upcoming test before my work week begins tomorrow. In the meantime I‘ve got the spirit of the #pemberlittens with me

We‘re getting in to my favorite part of the book. In the first half of the chapter we get great exposition of Darcy‘s character from those who know him best. Darcy then arrives home and we encounter Elizabeth at her most uncomfortable, though she‘s glad he can meet a less embarrassing part of her family. We are treated to a lot of mutual blushing -gratifying for all of us who crave Elizabeth/Darcy moments.

Lizzie‘s itinerary is set and there will be a stop at Pemberley (my dream vacation spot). We‘ve all been in this position. Like wanting to go to that bar or coffee place you love but you know the guy you broke up with hangs out there sometimes. You have to weigh the pro/cons of a potential run in and ultimately say “what are the odds? I‘m sure it‘s fine” Pemberley is TOTALLY worth it.

The best part of this chapter is Lizzie telling Wickham her new opinion of Darcy. Wickham, of course, tries to remind her to feel bad for him, but Lizzie is smart enough to infer what she knows. He can‘t manipulate her now.

They ultimately decide not to share Wickham‘s bad behavior. I find the above dialogue to be so impactful and so relevant. How true do you find this? Sort of in the same way that the least intelligent people always seem to have the most to say.

We get a sense of how truly young Lydia is and with her personality, there would be no chance of her not “being out” before her older sisters are married. In true Lydia fashion she gives a rundown of eligible single men including a newly single Wickham. She really is a mini Mrs. Bennet

We get, for the first time, a glance in to Darcy‘s mind from his own perspective. We finally see revealed, Wickham‘s true character in the most satisfying(and justified) Regina George-esque way. Are we due a Georgian era re-do of Mean Girls?

The chapter where Darcy and Elizabeth trade diatribes - one more intentionally pointed than the other - that give the best of us second hand embarrassment. I cringe every time. Who doesn‘t LOVE this book?! I‘d love to see this through the eyes of a first time Austen reader.

We get to see Mrs. Gardiner as a stable maternal figure for Jane and Elizabeth. Also, It‘s been so long since I last read this, I‘d forgotten that Mrs. Gardiner had a sense about Wickham from the start.

While the time calls for a certain way of doing things when it came to marriage, Charlotte shows that this wasn‘t every woman‘s great objective. Charlotte is practical and adds a depth of character to the story. Austen does a great job of showing that the women of that time were much more complex.

Elizabeth‘s own pride in thinking she sees through everyone (though sometimes true). Finally, we see Jane and Bingley‘s companionable naivety. Both are easily swayed and see the best in those around them.

This scene between Darcy and Lizzy is the beginning of their bitingly witty dynamic.
