On to this chunkster. I haven‘t read any WWII lit for quite some time, so I‘m ready to return to it.

Fallada turned real life events into fiction. Alone in Berlin is based on the true story of a working class couple in their 40s who wrote postcards against the Nazi-regime and distributed them anonymously all over the city for two years. Raw, brutal, tough, crude. Fallada switches perspectives masterfully from one character to another from thoughts to dialogues. An important but difficult book, not for everyone

I found this copy 11/3/17 ,says so right there on the receipt that‘s still in it.Have I read it yet ? No .🤦‍♀️

What an incredible book. Both the story of the author and the couple he wrote about for this book!

This WWII novel was inspired by the true story of Otto and Elise Hampel. In Nazi controlled Berlin, Otto and Anna Quangel (their fictional names) printed and dropped anti-fascist postcards throughout the city. Their intent was to create a rebellion against the Nazis when in reality the postcards were being turned over to the Gestapo. “Fallada aptly depicts the paralyzing fear that dominated Hitler's Germany.” At 550 pages it‘s well worth the read!

I picked up this book randomly while on a layover at Heathrow airport and I had no idea what I was in for. A novel about life in Nazi Germany written in 1946 by a German author who lived in Germany during the war and died in an asylum immediately after finishing the book. And was addicted to morphine. Did I also mention it's based on a true story? It's dreary and morally conflicted and there is no surprise happy ending but I found it compelling.

A very big novel about very small acts of resistance. I read Every Man Dies Alone several years ago, but I expect it to resonate more deeply now.

Primo Levi wrote “The Greatest book ever written about the German resistance to the Nazis.”

When I bought this yesterday, I didn't realise it was the basis for a film I watched a few months ago, a 2016 adaptation starring Emma Thompson and Brendon Gleeson, that was gripping enough that I sat down to it even though I'd missed the beginning. So, I have high hopes for the source material.

It's the story of an ordinary married German couple who mount their own secret resistance campaign against the Nazis during the height of Hitler's power.

This is not an easy read but a valuable and important one. Dark in tone and subject matter and remarkably written in less than a month it is the story of individual acts of German resistance during the Second World War. I found it engaging and incredibly moving but did need to be read in smaller chunks #backpackeurope. It pairs very well with a visit to the German resistance memorial centre to anyone in or visiting Berlin...

You have to be in the right frame of mind to read this book. It‘s tough going most of the way through but it‘s well worth it. It‘s a perspective of World War II that isn‘t voiced very often, it‘s gritty and heartbreaking but speaks volumes about the determination of a single person and that in itself is beautiful. I‘d definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for something to get their teeth into.

Slow starter, but well worth the effort in the end. Fascinating novel based on a true story of a small act of resistance by an ordinary German couple during WW2. This edition had extras at the end, including an afterword about the author‘s fascinating personal story. Also included were excerpts from the Gestapo file on the true case.

Ulrich Noethen liest das im übrigen großartig. Vielleicht ist der Grund, warum ich mit dem Buch doch nicht so richtig warm geworden bin der, dass ich mich schon zu sehr an seine Berliner Schnauze gewöhnt hatte. ??‍♀️

Das Hörbuch ist stark gekürzt ist. Es gibt eine Stelle, an der durch diese Auslassungen der Zusammenhang fehlt.

Trotzdem hat es mir sehr gut gefallen. Auch wenn es für mich in zwei Teile auseinanderfällt. Etwa die erste Hälfte habe ich atemlos gehört und konnte sie nicht weglegen. Die zweite Hälfte war mir manchmal zu ausufernd. Gerade in der zweiten Hälfte fallen auch die stereotypen Charaktere mehr und mehr auf.

Dennoch: große Empfehlung❣️

Nachdem ich mich heute Nachmittag immens über etwas und jemanden aufgeregt habe, hatte ich bis vor etwa 40 Minuten damit zu tun, die Konsequenzen den beteiligten Personen darzulegen. Ich bin immer noch ziemlich aufgewühlt.
Ich weiß nicht, ob es da eine gute Idee ist zum Einschlafen in meinem Hörbuch weiter zu hören. Das ist schon ziemlich anspruchsvoll. Ob ich mich darauf werde konzentrieren können❓

Bevor sich das „Übrige Kapitel“ aber rausstellen konnte, musste ich gestern erst mal wieder die Onleihe-App deinstallieren und wieder installieren. ? Die kann irgendwie nicht damit umgehen, wenn man Bücher ein zweites Mal ausleiht. Ich weiß nicht, bei mir stürzt die dann immer ab. Was ich ziemlich nervig finde, denn die App zu deinstallieren und wieder zu installieren, ist für mich immer das letzte Mittel. Das finde ich immer so unnötig. ?

Ich weiß ja auch nicht ??‍♀️, das typisch ich. ??

Erst leihe ich mir das Hörbuch wieder aus und freue mich, dass ich es nicht so lange blockieren muss, weil ich nur noch etwa eine Stunde übrig habe.
Dann stellt sich raus: eine Stunde von _diesem_ Kapitel. Es gibt noch ein zweites, das umfasst auch 4 Stunden. ?

Also hab ich mir das Hörbuch eben vorgemerkt ??‍♀️, denn im Moment höre ich keine 4 Stunden an zwei Tagen nicht weg.

Ich bin gerade sehr froh, dass das Hörbuch in meiner online wieder verfügbar ist. Auch wenn ich jetzt natürlich erst mal die Stelle suchen muss, an der ich das Hörbuch unterbrochen habe. Ich weiß auch nicht, das Hörbuch ?? passt irgendwie besser zu mir als das Buch, das ich eigentlich vorhatte am vergangenen Wochenende zu Ende zu lesen, aber da hat mir ja das Leben in die Suppe gespuckt. ?

⬆️⬆️⬆️ ❤️ So eine Einstellung zu haben, kostet sicher ganz schön Kraft.

Großartig, dieser Dialog zwischen Dr. Reichhardt und Quangel, in dem sich Quangel den Dirigentenjob erklären lässt. (Seite 485-487)

Vitamin-D-Produktion: ein❣️☀️😍

Blöd ist immer, wenn man es nicht schafft, ein Buch zu Ende zu hören, bevor die Leihfrist endet. Für diesen Fall hatte ich eine Vormerkung gesetzt, aber meine Onleihe hat Schluckauf. Das Hörbuch konnte ich also trotzdem nicht wieder entleihen, dafür aber das eBook.

Bei der Suche nach der Stelle, an der ich unterbrochen wurde, habe ich festgestellt, dass im Hörbuch manches fehlt.

Aber Lesen in schlaflosen Nächten ist doch ziemlich anstrengend.

Faszinierend und bewundernswert finde ich ja den offenen und ehrlichen Mut von Otto Quangel. Er verheimlicht und beschönigt nichts, sondern steht voller Überzeugung zu sich und seinem Handeln.

Ähnlich wie das reale Vorbild, das Ehepaar Hampel, würde ich wohl ebenso wie sie um mein Leben feilschen.

Das Hörbuch ist aufgeteilt in zwei Abschnitte. Der erste endet nach etwa der Hälfte. An diesem Punkt habe ich mich gefragt, was in den nächsten etwa 4-5 Stunden an Handlung noch folgen soll.

Inzwischen bin ich etwas schlauer und insbesondere das Zwischenspiel, das das weitere Leben von Eva Kluge schildert, gefällt mir richtig gut. Ich bin wirklich gespannt, wie die verschiedenen Fäden (Quangels, Eva, Hergesells) am Ende zusammenlaufen.

Ich glaube, ich wäre wie die Hergesells. Genauso verdächtig.

Das hat man davon, wenn man sich nur um seinen eigenen Kram kümmert. ?

Da wird einem ja schon beim Zuhören schwindlig und man hat dauernd das Bedürfnis zurückzuspringen, weil man denkt: „Wie? Was?“

Aber clever gemacht. Wer kann, der kann.

Großartig gelesen von Ulrich Noethen.
An den „richtigen“ Stellen passend berlinernd und den zugehörigen Figuren (Enno‼️) einen so treffsicheren akustischen Habitus verleihend, dass man sie plastisch vor seinem geistigen Auge herumschlurfen sieht. ?

ich glaube, ich brauche das Buch nicht mehr zu lesen. Ich würde dabei eh immer nur das Hörbuch im Kopf haben.

So, jetzt geht‘s hiermit los. Ich freu mich schon.

Allerdings bin ich gerade doch etwas verwirrt, weil für das Hörbuch mit „Das Hörbuch zum Film“ geworben wird. Denen ist schon klar, dass ganz am Anfang das Buch und sogar das _Papierbuch_ stand❓?

Ja ich weiß, das liegt schon als eBook bei meiner Onleihe auf dem Merkzettel. Aber als es mir gerade als Hörbuch begegnet ist, konnte ich nicht daran vorbeigehen, sondern musst es sofort entleihen.

Ulrich Noethen als Sprecher klingt vielversprechend, („sprechen“, ha-ha), auch wenn 9,5 Stunden Spiel-/Hörzeit mir im ersten Moment lang vorkommen. Daran merkt man, dass ich doch nicht so häufig Hörbücher höre, sondern meistens die Bücher lieber lese.
