This is a beautiful cookbook, I bought a copy for my cousin and bestfriend. That beautiful red pie is a BEET pie!! Its gorgeous but I don't think I would make one. Definitely recommend for any and all bakers!

#blamelitsy I put this cookbook on hold from the library after seeing @Mitch and @xicanti ā€s recreations of its hand pies. I fully expected to page through it and never actually cook anything. And then the library shut down, leaving me with the book and no excuses.

I combined two recipes, substituting sweet potatoes for delicata squash and following caramelized onion, goat cheese, and sage recommendations. They‘re delicious but they took ALL day.

Mitch Love that! We made some too yesterday! We didn‘t have black beans but used pinto beans and sweet potatoes. They were even better cold! š‘¨š¸¼ 4y

My library books are now due back in July. Oof. That seems a long ways away AND an optimistic reopening date.

Hestapleton OMG! Mine are still due back April 20th, but my state is on lockdown through the end of the month sooooo. All I gotta say is that if my library is closed through November, my book buying is going to get OUT OF CONTROL. 4y

xicanti @Cortg I imagine the librarians are gonna have their work cut out for them when they reopen, even with due dates somewhat staggered. Most the people I saw on my last library run, the day before they closed, were borrowing huge piles. It looked like the people with kids were grabbing the full 50 allowed. That‘s a lot of future check-ins. š³ 4y

xicanti @Laughterhp @Hestapleton they originally told us the eventual due date would be one week after the libraries reopened, so I guess they‘re aiming for a Canada Day relaunch. I‘ll be really, really surprised if it actually happens before September. November seems more likely. 4y

BkClubCare I haven‘t heard anything from my library since they extended my renewal date. And that was past weeks ago. 4y

xicanti @BkClubCare mine hasn‘t issued any official updates since the closure (except to say they‘d cancelled all in-person programs, which I thought was obvious), but I‘ve been checking my due dates list every so often. It‘s jumped up once before, to early May, but this was a pretty dramatic leap. 4y

ā€I want to eat that,ā€¯ I whispered when I learned SISTER PIE contained a recipe for sweet potato, black bean, and feta hand pies. Goal achieved!

I‘m mighty pleased with these little pies. The crust came out well and the filling‘s got a nice balance of creamy, savoury-sweet, and sharp. I probably won‘t make them OFTEN because they took forever, but I‘ll relish the four I just baked and I‘m glad I‘ll have some in my freezer going forward.

Combined library/thrift store haul! I requested the tagged cookbook after @Mitch posted about it, and I think it‘s gonna be good.

The thrift store‘s got a 10-for-$5 (or $0.77 each) special on books right now. I decided not to pad my basket; the three in the picture sufficed. I‘m especially taken with that issue of McSweeney‘s. It‘s three little volumes held inside the cover by MAGNETS IN THE SPINES!!!! How awesome is that design choice?

This book is amazing - everything comes out of the oven gorgeous and tasty! Made these sweet potato, black bean and feta hand pies and they‘re soooo good! Moving on to apple, raisin and cinnamon hand pies (slightly smaller!) and then coconut cream pie! Today is officially ā€Pie Day‘ in our house!
