Tag #Farewelltosummer and tag friends!

Winner will be announced tomorrow!

Bklover This probably sound silly, but I was at Walmart today staring at watermelons. I‘m terrible at picking them. A woman came up and started talking to me and she dug through all the melons and picked one for me that she said was a winner. It is. 🍉 8mo

1. Sarong Party Girls (print); The Haunting of Hill House (ebook); In Praise of Walking (audio)

2. Morning for non-fiction, night for fiction

3. Hmm... I think Heartstopper would make a pretty good beach read

@rachelsbrittain #weekendreads

rachelsbrittain Heartstopper is such a fun graphic novel! And I love that you separate morning and night reading by genre 3y
llwheeler @rachelsbrittain it is! And it just works out that way since my concentration for non-fiction is usually better during the day 3y

This must be a re-release, at least in the UK, as I received it as an ARC from #readersfirst.

The book is written in Singlish, which gives it a cutesy feel, in total juxtaposition to the seedy, grubby lives of Jazzy and her girlfriends, who are all getting a bit too old to snare an ang moh (western expat) husband!

I couldn‘t work out if I hated or felt sorry for Jazzy and felt the ending was a bit rushed, but still a good pick!

squirrelbrain Also fits #lilithjuly #thisonesforthegirls, even if Jazzy does treat her girl gang like dirt! 😁 @KarenUK @Cinfhen Thanks for the fun this month! 😘 5y
squirrelbrain Also #uglylocationchallenge @Clwojick - the fabulous view from my office window! 🤣 5y

squirrelbrain @TrishB we‘re OK here, thanks for asking though! Had a lot of rain but the worst was about 30 miles north of us. It was bad in the NorthWest too though wasn‘t it? 5y
TrishB We‘re ok here - further out Cheshire was was bad. No such thing as climate change 🤷‍♀️ 5y

A book that literally feels good (the cover is so soft!) is Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan's bestseller, Sarong Party Girls—now available in paperback.

Looking for a #weekendread? This irresistible novel is about a young woman‘s rise in the glitzy, moneyed city of Singapore, where old traditions clash with modern materialism. #amreading #mustread

balletbookworm Such a fun read for last fall's Readathon - Vanity Fair's Becky Sharp gets an update to 21st century Singapore 👍🏻 7y

Good book about being a young woman in Singapore, dating and work. It reminds me of the Red Dress Ink books I used to read. An added bonus was the Singlish.

LauraBrook Red Dress Ink used to get so much of my money! 7y
BookishShelly @LauraBrook I checked out every Red Dress Ink book the library bought and they bought most of them. I get nostalgic when I see them in thrift stores. 7y
LauraBrook @BookishShelly Same here! I have 2 left that are unread on my shelves and I'm saving them for a magical "right time". 7y

#book3 done for #readathon!

A really interesting Singlish novel that follows the efforts of Jazzy and her friends (who at 27 are falling on the "old" side) to secure an ang moh (white Western and RICH) husband. I've read some readers made comparisons to Emma but I was reminded a lot of Thackeray's Becky Sharp. The most interesting (and disheartening) aspect of this book is the way white expat men (and men in general) treat women, as toys.

Time to get a snack and start #book3 of #readathon. The "Singlish" Tan writes in is really fun to read. (Way easier than the Nadsat of A Clockwork Orange, imo)

My #readathon #stack! I always "overstack" to avoid "I don't know what to read next" aimless wandering around my house during @deweysreadathon ??? I'm super-behind on a lot of new releases, so my stack is mostly galleys (as is the iPad sandwiched between Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe and The Dead House). And no, I don't plan to read Jerusalem for the ENTIRE readathon. Eek!

brendanmleonard Haha this looks like my stack in terms of size and ambition. 8y

Mehso-so

Fun light read about young women in Singapore who like to party and are looking for the right type of guy, but not necessarily love. The end was a bit abrupt--I don't trust Jazzy's character growth to last a full day. What I love is the language-- it's written in Singlish, the patois of mostly English sprinkled with other languages and a distinctive grammar and cadence. Using Singlish helped paint a vivid picture of Jazzy and her Singapore.

Kidsilkhaze Don't be fooled by the marketing. This book has nothing to do with Emma. At all. 8y

I read SARONG PARTY GIRLS on a flight and couldn‘t put it down, so absorbed that I felt like I had apparated from coast to coast. I found Jazzy‘s voice really compelling and love that the book is written in Singlish.

We're LIVE on Facebook today at 2pm EST! Tune in for more fab summer reads!

LeahBergen I really NEED this! 👍🏼 8y
MeganAnn @WilliamMorrow I need to read this book now. Especially since you used "apparated" in your review ?? 8y

I didn't love this book. I didn't hate it, and I'm glad I read it, but when the ARC calls it both Emma in Singapore and Modern Breakfast at Tiffany's, you have expectations, particularly in the character growth department. They were...not quite met.

angel I'm curious about this book now. Might have to look into it! 8y
