My Struggle, Book Six
My Struggle, Book Six | Karl Ove Knausgaard
17 posts | 4 read | 3 reading | 9 to read
The final installment in the long awaited, internationally celebrated My Struggle series. The full scope and achievement of Knausgaard's monumental work is evident in this final installment of his My Struggle series. Grappling directly with the consequences of Knausgaard's transgressive blurring of public and private Book Six is a troubling and engrossing look into the mind of one of the most exciting artists of our time. Knausgaard includes a long essay on Hitler and Mein Kampf, particularly relevant (if not prescient) in our current global climate of ascending dictatorships.

Done! I‘m paraphrasing a review that stated It‘s like taking a peak at a strangers diary & finding all your secrets there. Not for everybody but I loved it.My progress was slow on volume 6 ,it was hard to read about Hitler during the holidays. This volume takes place after the 1st book is out, fallout & confrontation comes to pass as a relative calls him out on his memory of events.Glad I took the journey.challenging for some in his life ,I bet.

Liz_M Congrats on finishing all six volumes! 6mo

If you wish to do the deep dive into the human experience from one mans point of view, you need to read Knausgaards 6 volume saga.I‘m not half way through the 6th book, wish I was starting the series again.

ValerieAndBooks I‘m currently reading Book 3, and it is breaking my heart 💔 but this is such a compelling series. 12mo

Somehow I almost forgot to share with you all: dreams do come true!

The event started enormously late due to disorganization getting everyone into the venue, but I had a VIP ticket which included a priority spot in the signing line so I didn‘t leave too too late— but it was SO worth it.

Maggie Nelson was a great moderator and Karl Ove is just.... exactly who I thought he‘d be. 😍

PS this book is a brick and I couldn‘t be happier. 📚📚📚

ClairesReads I saw Knausgaard earlier this year at the Auckland Writers Festival. He was outstanding. What a time to be alive- so glad you enjoyed it. 13mo
mrozzz Right?!! Ugh. I love him so much... it was actually nice to see he had so many other fans. I had no idea. @ClairesReads 13mo
mrozzz I tried to explain to him how I was in a Book slump years ago and then I read the first two volumes of My Struggle and fell in love with reading again. @ClairesReads 13mo

tammysue Love it! 13mo
BarbaraBB I saw him once too and felt the same. Meeting him is as if you already know him. And knowing that he actually would rather not be there, talking to all those strangers while he seems so at ease with them. And of course he‘s gorgeous 😍. And book six is fab!! 13mo
mrozzz @Leftcoastzen @whatshesreadingnow 🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂 13mo
mrozzz @BarbaraBB he‘s SO good looking... and it‘s funny because on the US paperbacks the cover image is just his face, but the pictures must be at least 10 years old, so seeing him in person was like reacquainting myself with an old friend. UGH. 💜 13mo

You know , I might feel a lot better if I had just read today, instead of watching 9 hours of that hearing.A little sick to my stomach right now.

Leftcoastzen @vivastory I don‘t , I browse it in the library occasionally, but wanted to buy this issue because of Harlan Ellison 13mo
vivastory I have this issue, I haven't read it yet. My local library allows patrons to keep back issues. 13mo
Leftcoastzen @vivastory wow , cool that you can keep them. I don‘t read tons of Sci-fi and Fantasy, but I still admire Locus , the awards information, the depth of coverage on new titles and events. 13mo
Hooked_on_books In that case, I would recommend not looking at the front and center book in your pic today. It‘d probably make your nausea worse. 🤮 13mo
Leftcoastzen @Hooked_on_books You are exactly right , I may have to skip reading any chapters in that one today. 13mo

readinginthedark Quick question: Would you be interested in hosting a comedy for #ShakespeareReadalong in November? 13mo
See All 7 Comments
merelybookish @readinginthedark Sure. What did you have in mind? A Winter's Tale? 13mo
readinginthedark I think anything would work! A Winter's Tale would be seasonally appropriate. 👍 I'll post a heads-up to everyone today and direct them to you for a schedule, which you can do whenever. Probably want to start in about a week or two, so people have a chance to get their copies. Also let me know if you'd like to be in a regular rotation of hosts. Jess decided not to do it anymore, and I have Meaghan for the histories, so there'd be three of us. 13mo
merelybookish @readinginthedark Sure. We could also do Twelfth Night since technically set at Xmas time. 13mo
readinginthedark I'm good with either one. I think a comedy is best since we've just done a few heavier reads, but as long as we haven't read it yet, I have no preference! 13mo

My Struggle indeed! When Karl Ove decided to write a fiction that more or less seems to be real life , well ,it has its complications.I mean there is so much time writing ,editing, book deal , finally publication. It postpones that thought , how will the people in my life react ?Early in this 6th volume , the enormity of how his loved ones may react begins with his brother,Yngve. In the age of e-mail, the reaction comes fast.

BarbaraBB I‘ll follow your thoughts on this one! 14mo

So this happened.Actually, I think I started the series when 2 were already in paperback and volume 3 was nearly out in paper.Have all the others,in paper.Waited SO LONG for this one, had to have it right away.Wish I had nothing to do but read, only 22 pages in, oh ,that voice!

BarbaraBB This one is sooo good. I couldn‘t have wisheid for a better ‘grand final‘ 💜 14mo
Leftcoastzen @BarbaraBB good to hear.I have been enjoying his seasonal books , but this series flows like a river, kinda sorry I‘m going to the end , just to be dumped in the sea , I guess.Bittersweet.😊🤔 14mo

I don‘t usually preorder books, and this one is only 2 weeks from publication, and I usually don‘t like to pay inflated prices for Kindle books ($16.99!!), but I did it—preordered the final volume of Knausgaard‘s massive autobiographical novel. In the meantime, I need to read Book 5, which I‘ve been saving for just this time!
Full confession: I also splurged on a couple of books on the Booker Int‘l Long List.

Tanisha_A I guess once in a while is okay! 😆 1y
TrishB This is a massive book - I looked at in in Waterstones the other day - drawn to it by the size! 1y
sisilia I need to start Book 1 soon 😶 1y
See All 8 Comments
arubabookwoman @TrishB I saw that it is over 1000 pages, which made me want it even more. I love long books. I always have a hard time getting into a new book, but once I‘m in and liking it I want it to go on forever. When I have a choice, I‘ll choose a long book over a short one. Short stories are really difficult for me. 1y
TrishB I‘m not a short story fan either 👍🏻 1y
BarbaraBB The final book is so so good!! 1y
Liz_M I have resisted reading or buying these until the last volume was translated. I may finally cave and pick them up at the Brooklyn Book Festival next week. 1y

You better believe I bought seats in the front row barely a minute after Community Bookstore posted this event!!! 😄Can it be September already?? I was so disappointed last year when he was in NYC and I couldn‘t get to the event.

In 2015 I was in a years-long slump, reading maybe 12-20 books per year, and then I picked up the first of My Struggle and I seriously rediscovered my passion for words & reading. 💗

vivastory Too awesome! Enjoy! 1y

mrozzz @BarbaraBB That is so great to hear! It‘s always a huge letdown when you build up a favorite author in your mind and then it‘s turns out they‘re not so lovely. I got approved for the ARC of the 6th installment (can‘t believe the translation took so long!) so it‘s going to be my penultimate summer read next month. 🤗 1y

BarbaraBB @mrozzz O Wow, please tag me when you‘re done, I‘m looking forward already to your review. Apparently the Dutch translation came earlier than the English one (how strange!) but I really loved loved loved the 6th installment. 1y
BarbaraBB Knausgaard maybe not so lovable but man, is he human 💜💜 1y
mrozzz Exactly! Since he uses “himself” as his main character we know he‘s not a good person, but he‘s a great character, and it seems like, you‘re right, he so human and just self deprecating enough to (probably?) be very grateful & respectful to his readers. I will try to remember to tag you! @BarbaraBB I‘m so anxious to read it that I can‘t help but put it off for a few weeks. Are there any books you‘ve felt that way about? 1y
BarbaraBB I don‘t think so. I really fell in love a bit with Knausgaard for being the man he is, even though I couldn‘t stand living with him. It‘s his honesty and his writing and his talking when you meet him.. I think that‘s quite unique (edited) 1y
mrozzz I agree! Can‘t wait to meet him!! @BarbaraBB 1y
