The Fifth to Die
The Fifth to Die | J. D. Barker
24 posts | 13 read | 11 to read
In the thrilling sequel to The Fourth Monkey, a new serial killer stalks the streets of Chicago, while Detective Porter delves deeper into the dark past of the Four Monkey Killer. A 4MK Thriller Detective Porter and the team have been pulled from the hunt for Anson Bishop, the Four Monkey Killer, by the feds. When the body of a young girl is found beneath the frozen waters of Jackson Park Lagoon, she is quickly identified as Ella Reynolds, missing three weeks. But how did she get there? The lagoon froze months earlier. More baffling? Shes found wearing the clothes of another girl, missing less than two days. While the detectives of Chicago Metro try to make sense of the quickly developing case, Porter secretly continues his pursuit of 4MK, knowing the best way to find Bishop is to track down his mother. When the captain finds out about Porters activities, hes suspended, leaving his partners Clair and Nash to continue the search for the new killer alone. Obsessed with catching Bishop, Porter follows a single grainy photograph from Chicago to the streets of New Orleans and stumbles into a world darker than he could have possibly imagined, where he quickly realizes that the only place more frightening than the mind of a serial killer is the mind of the mother from which he came.

This book gave me a love/hate relationship. I loved the story, it was everything a thriller should be minus a few small things. But that ending! The last few chapters! If it wasn‘t 2.30am, I‘d be insisting someone go hunt me down the 3rd book coz I‘m about to lose my damn mind. Who the hell is Sam Porter?? #thingsthatmakeyougoargggghhh! #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 2points +5from games +2 from #SSH #PointsTotal-460

Lizpixie Also it was the #ScaryScavengerHunt #WithANumberInTheTitle & #WhereACharacterDies so that‘s 2 more points I believe @Clwojick 4d
vivastory I was going to warn you about the cliffhanger. Hopefully you can get book 3 soon! 3d
Clwojick looks good! 2 for the book, 2 for the ssh prompts, and 1 for participation. 3d

My Mia Corvere plushie is keeping me company while I read the disturbing bits of this book. I‘ve just got past the part where he puts the FBI agents eye, ear & tongue in cutouts in the wall for his partner to find. Makes me so glad that serial killers are such a rare phenomenon in Australia. #catgotyourtongue?🙉🙈🙊🐒#Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-450

Have been booted out of my nice warm bed so I‘m in my library with a blanket I got in my Finale box, a cup of Chamomile,Honey & Vanilla tea & the awesome follow up to The Fourth Monkey. I‘ve just been on my library‘s website to suggest buying the 3rd in the trilogy, The Sixth Wicked Child, this is so good! #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-437

Clwojick OKay! as of this post you are @ 437 points. That is including all of your comments on my games and all of your posts. For the “Finish my Phrase“ game, you got 5 right at 5points each, and 21 at 1 point each. You've done the best out of everyone on that game so far ! Keep it up! You're doing absolutely amazing. hope you're having fun! 😍 4d
Lizpixie @Clwojick I think the discrepancy was from the photo challenge posts. That‘s awesome about the Finish My Phrase! Most people probably weren‘t going very far down the list, I tend to dig a bit deeper. I‘m having a blast, I love Halloween!🎃 4d

I can not say enough good things about this book; I loved it in its entirety & my only regret was that I couldn‘t find more free time to read it faster. The characters became like people I‘ve known forever.I was emotionally invested in their lives & outcomes & ran a full gamut of emotions, got completely lost in their world.I had to keep reading, to know more.I still need to know more. Please tell me it won‘t be too long a wait for the next one?!

I haven‘t gotten into this book as much as I‘d like, but I am squeezing in some pages and some stitches here and there. So far I‘m enjoying it as much as I did the first in the series

So hard picking a new book from my tbr after I finish one ... but I‘ve decided that I‘m going to try to start The Fifth to Die tomorrow and adopt this cat‘s attitude. We‘ll see how that goes over.
Side note ... these reading pins are both awesome and accurate

Maybe the best book I‘ve read all summer!!! However, Mr. J.D. Barker, I am definitely not happy with the epic cliffhanger!!! 🤬😳 Seriously 🤨
Amazing. Highly recommend but read The Fourth Monkey first.

MicheleinPhilly Just bought this on super sale for Kindle. Of course I haven‘t read the first one yet. 😬 1y
Booknerd2 @MicheleinPhilly I highly recommend reading the first one. I read it a year ago and had a hard time remembering and getting back up to speed. It is so worth it. Great books 1y

This psychological thriller takes place in the Chicago area. The insanely clever killer enjoys baiting and tempting the detectives with bits and morsels of clues to send them out on wild, dangerous, well-plotted and often frightening treasure hunts. The killer is a master manipulator and the story is filled many twists and turns. An excellent thriller!

So, I subscribed to Audible when they had the first 3 months for $5 a month deal and I got The Fourth Monkey with my first credit. Got an email today saying I had an extra credit for this month so I got The Fifth to Die. I'm loving The Fourth Monkey so of course I had to get the second book. 😂 I can't believe it's 15+ hours though. That's my longest audiobook. 😱

"If I let you play that, you're going to start singing, then I'm going to start singing, then we're going to have some kind of moment, and when it's over things will be weird between us. I'm not ready to sing Neil Diamond with you. That's a big step. You haven't been in the field long enough."

4.5 stars rounded up to 5! This book was so good!!! You need to read The Fourth Monkey before reading this one, though. The Fifth to Die was fast-paced, chilling, and gruesome. The cliff hanger ending is so frustrating but also makes me want to read the next book. I loved the characters and the complex story line. Thank you Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for the free review copy!

Alfoster Loved them both!❤️ 1y
Georgette73 I just finished The Fifth To Die. The ending! We have to wait this one out. Argh! 1y
