Home Sweet Maison: The French Art of Making a Home | Danielle Postel-Vinay
14 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
French Women Dont Get Fat meets The Little Book of Hygge in this lively, sophisticated, and practical illustrated lifestyle guide that shows how to enjoy la belle vieto live like the French every daytransforming your house into a home defined by beauty, family, and accessible elegance. How do the French create the elusive and alluring sanctuaries they call home? This question long intrigued Danielle Postel-Vinay. Thanks to a chance encounter with a French expat in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and years of immersive research, she embarked on a quest to discover the secrets of the French home aesthetic. Experiencing first-hand la belle viethe beautiful lifePostel-Vinay now shows everyone how to create their own French sanctuary, a home sweet maison, no matter where they live. Providing more than just interior decorating and design tips, Postel-Vinay teaches you how to foster the warmth, beauty, and rituals inherent in the French home and create an environment better suited to living a rich, full, connected life. At the center of the book is the idea that your house should be a reflection of you, your hobbies, your family history, your rituals, all the things that make your life unique. A happy home is a home that expresses your rituals and your taste, not one that relies on prefab dcor from a mass retailer. Home Sweet Maison encapsulates the very heart of the French way of seeing the world: set the table formally, adhere to all the conventions of ritual and tradition, then take pleasure in indulgence. Its about using French concepts and routines to change our homes, our relationships, and our lives for the better.

I absolutely love this book! It is one of my favorite books! It is more than just a home design book, it taught me how to appreciate seasons and my surroundings again. I am obsessed with this book.

I have a habit of accidentally moving and taking forgotten library books with me. It's something my parents, particularly my dad, have teased me about for years. Today the book that my dad bought for me used arrived. It is one of my favorite books, I have re-read it many times! Imagine my amusement when I ripped open the box in excitement and found that it was a used book from a public library in Nevada!

Very similar to other French lifestyle books. The American-born author takes the reader on a room-by-room journey of how the French design and live in their homes with practical tips and advice at the culmination of each chapter on creating one's own space. It's not a bad book, especially if this is your introduction to the topic. However, if you have read similar books, don't expect much new. Her biggest piece of advice is to invest in a bidet.

This guy isn't usually big on cuddling, but I've been lucky to have him curl up with me two nights in a row. It greatly improves the reading (and this one's pretty good to begin with). #currentlyreading #catsoflitsy

An interesting companion read to Marie Kondo‘s books. Use Kondo‘s method for clearing out possessions that don‘t spark joy and then create spaces in your home to display those things that DO.

Inspired me to let my home be a reflection of me and my family, and clear out the mess that's not working for us.

Bonjour! I give this short and sweet book 5/5. 🌟I simply loved it! It describes the importance of purpose (in French culture) of ALL rooms in a house/apartment. This book also gives the reader ideas and inspiration on how to achieve the same french style.
