Dry Bones | Peter May

What has happened to Jacques Gaillard? The brilliant teacher who trained some of France's best and brightest at the Ecole Nationale d'Administration as future Prime Ministers and Presidents vanished ten years ago, presumably from Paris. Talk about your cold case. The mystery inspires a bet, one that Enzo Macleod, a biologist teaching in Toulouse instead of pursuing a brilliant career in forensics back home in Scotland can ill afford to lose. The wager is that Enzo can find out what happened to Jacques Gaillard by applying new science to an old case. Enzo comes to Paris to meet journalist Roger Raffin, the author of a book on seven celebrated unsolved murders, the assumption being that Gaillard is dead. He needs Raffin's notes. And armed with these, he begins his quest. It quickly has him touring landmarks such as the Paris catacombs and a chateau in Champagne, digging up relics and bones. Yes, Enzo finds Jacques Gaillard's head. The artifacts buried with the skull set him to interpreting the clues they provide and to following in someone's footsteps--maybe more than one someone--after the rest of Gaillard. And to reviewing some ancient and recent history. As with a quest, it's as much discovery as detection. Enzo proves to be an ace investigator, scientific and intuitive, and, for all his missteps, one who hits his goals including a painful journey toward greater self-awareness.

Enzo McLeod investigates the cold case of a senior civil servant who disappeared 10 years ago. He finds his skull in a box of objects which are clues to the location of the rest of his body.

DNF. The puzzles leading to the locations of the dismembered body were fun but 2/3 of the way through I realised I had no interest in the events and characters.

This book is called both Extraordinary People and Dry Bones - I don‘t know why

However, I did not like this book. I wanted to read more Peter May since I really liked the Lewis Trilogy. I will not be continuing this series.

I did not like Enzo. He was really just a horny man and all the thought about was women‘s breast. It just really turned me off him. The mystery itself was intriguing with the puzzle. It‘s the only reason I didn‘t bail.

Enzo Files book 1
The best beginning to a series that I've read for quite some time. Enzo has made a bet with several friends that he can solve a cold case murder. This starts him on a "treasure hunt" of sorts, beginning with an old chest found in the rubble under the streets of Paris, which held a skull and other objects. Definitely cant wait to read book 2!

I think the Peter May series might be my favorite, even though I haven't even finished reading book 1 of the Enzo files. Such an interesting, funny character is Enzo Macleod. Any other opinions? Compared to his other series or standalones(which i have not read any yet) this book was also published under title of Dry Bones
@Andrew65 @EadieB

EadieB Enzo reminds me of Peter May. I think he modeled this character after himself. 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB really? Thats interesting. I think he's my favorite May character 3y
EadieB @Crazeedi I remember him saying something about that during one of his videos on FB. 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB 🤩 he's very quirky! And funny 3y
EadieB @Crazeedi Peter May was born in Scotland but he now lives in France. 3y

This is a pick, with reservations. I enjoyed the mystery and the characters have potential, but. Omg, the references to one character‘s “cantaloupe breasts” and cleavage and voluptuousness! Every single time this character appears! And she‘s one of Enzo‘s students and the same age as his own daughter. Just NO. The sex scenes are cringy. There‘s also a mention of how Enzo thought someone was wearing a mask under a mask, but no, he‘s black! 🤔😳🤬

BookwormM OMG that sounds bad 3y
rabbitprincess Yikes, that is cringeworthy! 3y

I got half way through and I just can‘t. I wanted to like it, a half Italian half Scottish professor that solves a bizarre French murder BUT the hyper masculinity and over the top clues made me just too tired. There are better books out there.

Mehso-so

An interesting thriller with puzzles, history and forensics rolled into one. I would definitely read more. I listened to this one on audio and the voice the narrator used for the main character (slight Scottish accent) put me in mind of Hunt For Red October era Sean Connery...🤷‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️Wasn‘t exactly how I wanted to picture the character lol. Here‘s a gratuitous pic of my cat trying to steal candy from my Cupid package

This book popped up on my B&N Serial Reads. Any thoughts on it? Has any Littens read it? Just wondering if it worth checking out. Not like I need to add another book to my current reading TBR.
